the Wakefield Doctrine ‘reality writ small’1

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

20120823-plato-cave

Simplest way to understand, to use, to participate in the fun and insight offered by the Wakefield Doctrine? Start with:

  1. clarks think
  2. scotts act
  3. rogers feel

then, ‘prove’ to yourself that a) you are one of the three personality types and 2) learn the character and nature and typical behavior of people who are of the ‘other two worldviews’

…finally, look around, observe the behavior of the people in your life today. Some of the personality types you have to look for, as they are hiding (and), others you can’t possibly miss, as they are making certain that they are noticeable. You know the coolest (and sometimes spooky thing) about this here personality theory here? The clarks and the scotts and the rogers in your life know exactly how they are supposed to act. Seriously. They have not read this blog or know anything about the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers and yet, as you observe their behavior, as you watch how they react to common, everyday situation, as you see how they deal with frustration, respond to temptation and overcome adversity  you will have a moment where you think, “now wait just a damn minute! this is a set up, that guy at that blog told them to act like that!

Sorry. (or not).  It’s true. clarks act like clarks whether they are purple-hair-streaked girls at the 7/11 or awkwardly kind baggers at the Safeway or even your daughter’s Kindergarten Teacher (who looks at her pupils with such a calm love and acceptance, then you can’t help but notice the slightly guarded and distant look that comes into her eyes when she turns to talk to you)   and scotts are so scottian in the real world, funny and helpful and brash and outrageous, they are so kind (and yet you feel some kind of thrill of something, anytime they are being helpful) and they are so focused (on you) that sometimes you feel a little….uncomfortable and they are so… dynamic and never…stop  and the rogers  well, they’re there they are the majority and they are everywhere and sometimes, (especially if you’re new at this Doctrine thing), you may have trouble distinguishing the scotts from the rogers (interestingly only with the males,  you will never have difficulty mistaking a scottian female for a rogerian woman. ever) but with rogers  it is always personal, it (whatever ‘it’ may be, such as,  how you do your job, how long the traffic light stays on red, how unfair the rules are or how important tradition and family is and how there is never enough time to explain) always has the roger at the center, it simply is never not about them. scotts… they may choose to be at the center or they may prefer to be off to the side, for them (the scotts) it is about the prey and the hunt. (in a good way, of course) (lol)

Alright. There it is, the Wakefield Doctrine.

HEY!!! Wait a damn second!

Watch for a return of the Wakefield Doctrine Series: ‘Video Interviews with Interesting People  ‘

I might just have gotten zoe to agree to a Video Interview!!

(no, not in person. the ‘Video’ of the ‘Video Interview’ is me in my car with my guest on the phone and we can hear everything as I drive and ask intelligent and insightful questions.)  Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week.

1) yeah, a bit on the obscure side, but then when I looked up the original expression and all, I felt alright with it  and now that I’m done writing the Post, this title is totally without relevance  oh well

there is a way to use this, (the) Wakefield Doctrine that is actually quite practical!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

1950s Teacher In Front Of Classroom Writing Confidence On Blackboard

You know what’s a real skill to have? The ability to teach! I’m thinking of the kind of teacher who not only can impart knowledge to the student the very first time, (doing whatever the hell it is that Teachers do), but is able to help the pupil or learnee, to learn more about a thing than they already know.  I suspect this is a gift that music teachers, early elementary and graduate school teachers share.

Note: the Rule of ‘everyone does everything at one time or another‘ says that all three personality types can be and, are skilled and effective Teachers. There is no exclusive domain for skills, professions, avocations or talent among the three worldviews. It is simply that how the art/science of ‘teaching’ is manifested in distinctly different ways. For a clark, teaching is one thing, for a scott it is something else and for rogers …completely different, from their perspective. (Warning: new(er) aspect of the Doctrine follows). And since we have just created a thought picture in your minds in the shape of a ‘guidance counselor in high school’, lets expand on this and suggest that and you (the Guidance Counselor) have been assigned the task of recommending the best career choice in the field of education for the 6 students you have been assigned, you might do as follows:

  • clark (female): elementary grades (reasoning: the class is comprised of people that a  clark is able to relate to, and the class does not get defensive with, like they tend to with adults)
  • clark (male): college level teaching (reasoning: most of the bullying, on the part of the students is in the arena of the intellect and the clark will not have a problem …unlike the earlier grades)
  • scott (female): pretty much any grade when one of the primary goals is to ‘kid wrangle‘, when the learning is more teaching ‘fundamental social rules of behavior’, picture  a cross between Cesar Millan and Famke Janssen)
  • scott (male): shop, gym (probably not elementary grades, “so honey what did you learn in school today? oh! mommy the new Teacher knows so much…. pull my finger!”)
  • roger (female): home ec, social studies, history (“I would like to submit to the Board my recommendation for a new Course: “Getting Along without Standing Out 101”  and “Cooking Meals that look perfect”)
  • roger (male): social studies, history, home ec ( ‘hey kids I really talk your language and I will, in fact, pass along things I learn in our private conversations to other students I am trying to impress. It’s never too soon to learn about the real world!”)

We can now clearly see how, the art of teaching represents something different to each of the three (yes, three), while there are undeniable differences in the culturally permitted behavior assigned to each of the two genders, the Wakefield Doctrine is, in fact, gender neutral. The person who grows up in the reality of the Outsider (the clark) finds the students they can best relate to, the Teacher-to-be who is, by personal-social-spritual development, a Predator (scotts) knows that antelopes are much lower mantainance (as feedstock) than, say, a herd of wildebeests and the Herd Member (rogers) simply sees the herd and notes the predators and remembers the blue monkeys (for future use).

So, class   are there any Questions??

….and No! I will not pull my own finger!

* do they still have guidance counselors? I mean the male roger (‘here take this aptitude test, ok clark the scores are back the career you are best suited for is ‘file clerk‘**) or clarklike female (“so what do you like to do, what do you dream of doing“) or scott (“c’mere let me tell ya a thing or two about jobs“)

hi‘ …the Wakefield Doctrine (“no! don’t leave! it’s alright! that was a joke…really!”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

IMAG0176

…so yesterday I was talking with a woman(a clark), in my office yesterday, and since there was no one else in the office at the time,  we talked about the Doctrine. I enjoy such conversations because, even though she is not active here at the blog, and our paths do not frequently cross in the office, talking Doctrine to her is different than it is with other people, (you know, like most of you), it’s more like…  lets say you and I were close friends in high school and, as happens more often than not, we went our separate ways and then, 20 years later run into each other at a funeral for a person we both knew in high school. Like that. Only different.

Her understanding of the Wakefield Doctrine is solid. (Solid enough to see the rogers and the clarks and the scotts, around her, without any prompting…that good. The thing is, since she’s learned most of what she knows (about the Doctrine) from the blog, hearing her discuss the personality types has a certain… “wow! she really knows this stuff and, like,  hey! that’s the Wakefield Doctrine she’s talking about!!”)

(You wanna know the weirdest thing?)

I know that many, (if not most), of you out there are responding to this last,  with one form or another of,  “well, duh clark!”    (I must confess, my ‘knowing’ this is a fairly recent development of my appreciation of the level of understanding that is enjoyed by Readers.)

The thing about my conversation with Sally that made such an impression on me was what we expressed about rogers, (in general) and clark-roger relationships (specifically).  It was one of those conversations that I am coming to recognize as  ‘the new dialogue of the Wakefield Doctrine’1   Heard among all of us who understand the Doctrine whenever we (might) discuss one or another or a third someone’s life.  The key element,  ‘la chose qui fait toute la différence’  is that we are, all of us, sharing an insight (into human behavior) that most people are not aware and it, (the insight, not the people), is: fun and interesting and useful because we know that the Wakefield Doctrine is for us and not for them.  How critical to the spreading of our little personality theory this odd little statement really is, was brought home to me recently when I was drawn into a conversation with guy who had no real interest in the Doctrine2, but for reasons both social and political the interaction happened. Within seconds of the conversation starting, I recognized that there was a certain, un-bridgeable gap, but being a clark  I tried anyway.  It was simply not meant to be… but the thing that I got out of that interaction was the reminder that, when I properly apply the Doctrine, I always…. (thats always) learn, or am reminded of, or gain an insight into myself as a result of the interaction. Doesn’t always do me any good. I don’t always know how it will benefit me, but it brings home the simple statement, ‘the Doctrine is for me, not for them’.

What a great thing for a personality theory to have!  (We used to say, back in the beginning of the Doctrine blog, that when a person comes across the newest personality test or quiz or survey in a magazine or on the internet, the first thing they say out loud  is,  “oh honey!  come here! they have you down to a ‘T’, you have to try this!” ) The Doctrine may be a tool, but it is not a club!

(hey, lets go old-school and stick in a vid…for later in the day, ya know?)

2)*  hey, latest studies imply that there are at least 7,999,999,802 people on earth who do not care to learn to use the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool to aid their understanding of the people in their lives!

1)*  (‘the old dialogue of the Wakefield Doctrine’ was, essentially, every Doctrine blog Post up to about a year and a half ago. This ‘dialogue’ was me and my imagined Readers and it was good for both of us).

* didn’t have a chance to cut and paste, I’m sure you understand

(yes, I am playing with the system, again) the Wakefield Doctrine “…didn’t we read this already? no! it just deja boo

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

hey ho!  no!  your:

  • eyes are not deceiving you!!   (be careful with that, with increasing age comes a certain advantage to a slight diminuendo of visual acuity… helps make the increasingly hairy sections look smoother and the moving groundward body parts closer!)
  • mind is not playing tricks… at once the worst (possibility) and the (best) of all worlds… it might be best to think, “hey! I’ve been losing my mind for a lifetime, adding not only changes to what I do, but insisting that all these new lifeforms around me…. are a part of me, despite and especially in light of the fact that they are changing and growing old!…. if this is losing my mind, then I am surely very good at it, by now!

no. be assured. this is, in fact, yesterday’s Post….today!  But with an insight that is: enlivened, freshened and …. comfortably bemused!  courtesy of Friend of the Doctrine  Jean’s  little gift:

for Clark from jeh large

Look upon this representation  (above me, the words that you read) of a fine and excellent addition to the,  ‘Wakefield Doctrine maison de mode‘!  Picture, in your mind,  a human body inside of this cloth container! Does it not sing,  “I am a scott, hear me….wait! no, you will not hear me until it is way, way too late”

Thank you Jen-ay   we will hold this aside… never know when, in the course of the wandering in the blogosphere that we are given to, that we might be caught by wild scottian females (come on!! wild scottian females!! lol)  and will need to distract them in order to make our escape.   ( “Hey!! look it’s a herd of distracted rogers!! over there!!!”)

OK  I’ll stop now.
