“…of things seen in the night”, the Wakefield Doctrine …(remember: ‘the Doctrine is for you, not for them’)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Was it last week someone was talking about testing…or insights into personality…or maybe it was one of those stray thought paths that spring up as I try to write a Post. In any event, I was trying to find an image that would convey the idea of a certain type of psychological testing, specifically a test called a Thematic Apperception Test (TAT).1  I kept wanting to find the Wyeth painting, ‘Christina’s World’ among the images used in administering this test, but I could not and then (as often happens) another rabbit ran by and I followed it to god knows where and (I assume), I wrote a Post. In any event, this morning as I wandered around google… started with Kristi’s reference and very fun quote from ‘Ulysses’ I somehow ended up with a page of images that included the above. (Now that I think of it, I was following a trail that included the phrase ‘the nuns ringing the Angelus bells’, however those images were too weird (I know!).

I will keep this brief, as the start of the workday is racing towards me like the un-seen horror in a nightmare.2

the Wakefield Doctrine is not an answer, it is a tool… a perspective. The best use of the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine results in (one) being able to ‘see the world as the other person is experiencing it’

The Wakefield Doctrine is unique and it is useful and it is fun.

the fun this weekend was found in two realms:  the Wakefield Doctrine Saturday Night Drive, the Wakefield Doctrine Sunday Morning Video Brunch and the Wakefield Doctrine (participation as co-host) in the TToT.

so what is your favorite nightmare?   mine (as referenced in this weekend’s TToT) was fairly bland:

I find myself with a group of people out side a large building in an unrecognizable location. We all seem to know each other and there is a sense of ‘hey, lets do something!’. One of the people in the group, who I seem to know (in that wonderful holographic mix of people, all different and distinct and all bundled into one person) says, ‘the hell with you, I going into this building and win‘.
I feel the need to help, (combination of desire, friendship and protectiveness for the person), but the building is simply reeking of ‘bad things… not simple fear, not even simple anxiety but bad outcomes’. There is an aura of danger on an elemental level.
…in any event, she grabs a flashlight and runs into the front door. I’m like all, ‘shit! now I gotta‘ and follow her into the front door and up the stairs that are the only choice.  Now, while I feel the anxiety dial start to twitch, I recall previous dreams all involving large three level buildings where none of the rooms lead in to the same room more than once. As in, get on one floor, follow the hallway, pick a door and then,  if you turn around, not only will the corridor not be the same one you entered from, there is a good chance that the frickin door is not there… and the anxiety level builds and I can’t stand still, it is a combination of a (need) escape, a (desire to) rescue  and (overwhelming need) to avoid a very serious trap.

Ok!  time to go word, where hopefully the rooms will remain stable, lol.

There you go, Lizzi

1) hey, you gots to read this Wikipedia reference! They mention two people as creators/authors of the TAT, Henry Murray and Christiana Morgan… who out there doesn’t believe that this is a classic  roger and clark collaboration? lol… if you  need help with this, write a Comment already!

2) There have been calls to do a Post about nightmares… prompted by a mention of such a dream in this week’s TToT

TTofT Episode 17 the Wakefield Doctrine (“it’s all related, but then you knew that, didn’t you?”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

conference-at-night-1

note from Future…now Past: I read all the Posts published as of 7:06 am EDT before  continuing with this version of my TToT, which I should add for the sake of faux accuracy was written late last night. Damn! I now remember why I don’t like to write a Post in more than one ‘sitting’ and why I avoid reading the other Posts (in a given bloghop). Other than vanity and ego, I can’t recall what those reasons are… ha, ha. In any event, Regular Readers know that Saturday tends to be more of a work day than the weekdays are, at least in terms of my having access to a computer throughout the day. As they say in the journalism business,  ‘lets run with the cat in the tree’* so, since time keeps on slippin into, either ‘the future’ or ‘darkness,’ I will continue this Post, already in progress:

I will be grateful if I manage to write a list that will: a) be consistent with the spirit and the intent of this bloghop and 2) offers an insight into how I am affected by those who participate in this here bloghop here (1);

That I have expressed what everyone knows is going to be turned into (one of ) my 10 items, should not be a distraction from the true motivation that I am sorting through as I write these words (2);

I would describe what is going on here is that I seem to be trying to do a totally non-planned Ten Things of Thankful list… although I suspect that I’d be mis-using the term ‘stream of consciousness’ if I were to apply it to this Post. I’d be totally grateful if someone would be kind enough to copy-paste a definition of the term in the Comment section below… don’t worry about causality or anything like that… if the definition contradicts what I am writing, so be it…I’ll still feel grateful that someone cared enough to go to the trouble (3);

You know, I tend to get pretty self-conscious about my writing, especially when I veer off the rhetorical highway, like a literary Clyde Barrow trying to escape capture by Frank Hamer… but, at the moment two forces are at work on me: the belief that the other participants will recognize my ambition towards good-natured fun and the TToT hostini will feel that a little of the outré  will help attract new writers who might be tired of the normal, professional writing that is endemic on these pages if that is the case, I will be happy and grateful (4);

As I approach the peak of the list of ten (as I might picture the halfway point of ‘Number 5’), I am grateful that this Post will cure my co-hosts of their belief that those weird Posts (of clark’s) are really refreshing (5);

Hey, since it’s morning, I have a new perspective to add to this S.O…. (where was I?)… C!  Post. I woke up in the middle of the night from an amazing nightmare, totally old-school horror!  I will put lol here, because as clarks reading this know, we (clarks) find much about our world interesting, including nightmares. As to how I am grateful?… I gotta claim a twofer here… I am grateful that I got over it (the post dream creeps that has your skin crawl as you force yourself to get up and go to the bathroom and then the kitchen… just to speed up the re-set from the dream) and I am grateful for the reminder of the perspective it reminds me that I have… that is is all about here and now. Not about how well I might do at work or at blog writing or at home, it is about what I am at the moment. I accept that this ‘mindfulness’ is a never-goal, that it is a helpful and constructive reminder to live in the moment… (6) and (&)  (7);

Today, this being one of those frickin two-step Posts, I did read everyone’s Post and I will simply say, ‘damn!’  but that’s all I’ll say on the subject! (For the benefit of new participants, I will say that this word is meant to have a certain Martin Lawrence inflection), one of awed admiration for words well arranged. (8);

I will reserve my thoughts on the other Posts for my Comments in each respective entry that makeup this week’s TToT, I will express my un-alloyed enthusiasm for the increasing conversation that is appearing in this bloghop on weekends. I’m convinced that anyone who enjoys blogging would totally enjoy what Lizzi and (my fellow-ette) Hosts do each and every week… so, if you are reading this first, I will say, “Hey! you see a Comment thread that makes you: happy, sad, mad or glad? jump right in yo. we good with that.” (9)

Seeing how I went and promised certain gifts and inducements  to those who might join us this weekend (I believe I offered to pen 2 items for anyone joining us for the first time, but so far no takers…whew!) (tentative 10)

Wakefield Doctrine Video Brunch tomorrow morning (9 or 9:30 EDT…depends on Lizzi and Michelle start availability)  I will make another attempt to get you people to Wakefield  Dyanne?  zoe?  Stephanie?  Melanie?  come on! you’ll love New England at this time of year… clear skies (if it’s not raining) and ocean vistas.

Ten Things of Thankful
 Your hosts

Friday unfinnish(ed) the Wakefield Doctrine (“no, since you mentioned it, I don’t think I could cram more links into the Post”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

serious-gormet-shit

…’Fish for Sentience Fry Day’

Seeing how I have nothing but respect for my friends,  Janine and Kate and Stephanie and Kristi, and  their bloghop (Finish The Sentence Friday), I cannot, in all good conscience, submit anything like what was rattling around in my head this Friday morning. Not only was I  going to ‘lead’ with the phrase ‘Fish for Sentience Fry Day’, I was wracking my brain-pan for a logical and reasonable launching point from this phrase into what was to have been my contribution to their fine and respected bloghop!  So, go there and read all the excellent writers and tell ’em the Doctrine says ‘Hidy!’

Hey, did you read the Post about rogers, this week?  I should ask, did you read the Post and the Comments?  Well, if you did and (if) you are able to infer what the value of the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers) is on the basis of reading that Post, we want to hear from you.

The thing about this blog is that it I am attempting to relay and convey an awful lot of information and insight!  Not only is the Wakefield Doctrine a really unique and totally cool way of thinking about personality, personality types, changing the things about ourselves that we’ve never been able to change, but I’m attempting to do so while developing my blogging skills. The thing of it is, while I have no doubt about the power and potential of the Wakefield Doctrine itself, I do struggle at times, to present the principles of this personality theory to Readers of a blog. I will continue to do so. Of course, now we have the Wakefield Doctrine Sunday Video Brunch! So if you’re liking what you think you’re reading and want the inside scoop, join us Sunday.

So. About the Post about  the rogers and Cyndi‘s sister and the Doctrine. Two words: “… to see the world as the other person experiences it.”

The value in learning and using the Wakefield Doctrine as a perspective on personality types and behavior is that the Wakefield Doctrine maintains that we all live, to a small but very real degree, in a personal reality (a ‘worldview’) that is characterized in one of three ways: the world of the Outsider (clarks), the life of the Predator (scotts) or the reality of the Herd Member (rogers). If you learn the characteristics of these three worldviews and observe the behavior of the people in your life, you will be able to infer their worldview, and by doing so, you will know more about that person than they know about themselves.

While the above explanation is sufficient for the clarks, (for whom there is ‘no such thing as un-interesting new knowledge’) for the scotts and rogers I will say this: the Wakefield Doctrine is based on the idea that while we all live in one worldview (our predominant worldview) we all have the potential of the ‘other two’. So if you want to be a better hunter or know more about the background of the people in your life, come join Michelle and them on Sunday Morning.

(oh yeah!!  with all due respect to my friends at TMT Tuesdays (Jen and Kristi) and, of course, the gang at the FTSF… the coolest damn bloghop in the blogosphere is tomorrow  the TToT   with Lizzi leading her band of bad-assed bloggerini on a weekend of grateful and hell-raising, I will say without hesitation that you won’t regret joining up!  It’s a bloghop that runs both days of the weekend… and the Comment threads are worth the trip. I’m so sure you’ll enjoy yourself that I’ll make this Special Offer!!!  if you have a mind to participate I will write 2 of your ’10 things’ for you!!*  so click on this here link at about 7 pm tonight and have some good ole’ virtual fun!**)

* some restrictions may apply, consult Secret Prize Rules and as long as it’s ok with Christine, you’re in!
** no, Christine won’t hurt you… that’s why Dyanne is there

rogers, rogers, rogers the Wakefield Doctrine (there are three personality types, ya know)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Volta_ao_Algarve_2012_Team_Sky

Today’s Post is for our more Advanced Readers.

Today’s Post contains an example of one of those moments, when the work you have put into learning the characteristics of the three worldviews pays off…  I want you to know that we appreciate how difficult it can be to hold the characteristics in your head, going through your day, hoping to observe the people in your world demonstrate the personality traits that we talk about in this blog,  only to have things ‘click’ 15 minutes after you leave the supermarket checkout line where the girl at the register, (who seemed quite attractive, even with the piercings and the tattoo and the streak of purple in her hair), said something that made you laugh and you can’t for the life of you remember exactly what she said…. we know how there are people in your family who come to mind after you read a Post and you’re pretty sure you know which of the three personality types they are, but you forget which is the weird one and which is the man-eater and which is the pain in the ass…

  • clarks are the personality types that make perfect sense if you imagine you grew up being the Outsider, never having the most basic of beliefs, i.e. that you belong, that you are just like everyone else and instead you ‘knew’ that you missed learning something that everyone else learned and that all you had to do is discover what that information is and then you would be accepted, but until then you really had better not be too obvious how … ‘not the same‘ you really are or something bad might happen
  • scotts who, if you forget that they are your husband (‘he can be so kind, sometimes he has trouble with his anger’) or your boss (‘…funny stories, will totally ‘go to bat for you’…just wish he didn’t get so off-color sometimes’) or your neighbor  (‘she has her family so organized… if you need to leave the kids on short notice she is the first to help…but the way she acts around your husband, if you didn’t know him better’), are understandable if you watch how predators (lions and tigers and dogs, oh my!) act on those nature shows… mercurial and enthusiastic, impulsive and helpful they are living examples of ‘live life for the day’
  • rogers… the glue of human society, the flypaper of human potential… (lol  a joke that strikes me funnier than it probably is, but it’s 2:12 am and experience tells us that many things at 2:12 am are funnier and sometimes scarier than they are in the day world.) rogers are the personality type that results from knowing that you are a part of the group, the herd; rogers are the personality type that live for tradition and connections and they are the person who is reliable and inflexible, precise and narrow-minded, kind and bigoted, this is the personality type that the following commercial is meant for:

So watch and smile or laugh or scratch your head and say (to yourself ) ‘I guess I missed something, I don’t see the humor’  (or) ‘of course!’  (or) ‘frickin rogers!’

TMT Tuesday #26 … the Wakefield Doctrine (“…incense and mind-altering substances not required, but surely wouldn’t hurt.”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

mixtape jenkehl

 The rules of Twisted MixTape are as such: Try and create a 5 song mix based on this week’s theme. This week our theme is Groove.  Make a 5 song playlist of anything that makes you sit back, groove and relax!

Take it easy, make it flow, remember in your mind you are creating your mixtape for a friend, what would he want to hear?

Relaxing slow jams. You wanna chill, you want your friends to chill. Any genre from rock to jazz to hip-hop, but it’s gotta be slow-jams

Our host, Jen Kehl and Kristi (no last name required, either you know who she is or, well …you can always dream) are quite explicit in their instructions this week.

The thing I enjoy (or abhor) about TMT Tuesday is that, for me, the process of coming up with a MT results in some serious retrospective shit. I read everyone else’s Posts and I get the sense of people musically grounded, active in their exploration of new styles (of music) and an at-the-fingertips access to the incredible variety of musical genres.  In my case, not so much.

Take this week’s theme. The idea of ‘slow grooves’ and ‘chillin out’ and such, forces me to look within and remember when last I felt like… ‘SLs and COs’.  And therein lies the problem. I like the music listed below but, as implied by Jen and Kristi’s instructions, it is music associated with a certain…mood, pace  whatever the word is for, ‘hey, I got an hour, don’t need to be anywhere but I don’t want to sleep… what can I listen to?’ Ya know?
The thing of it is, when I go rummaging through my memory for the last time I did just that, I find myself in the 1980s (or worse, the 1970s)! Damn! It surely would appear that I have not chilled out in a very, very long time.
Very enlightening. Semi-depressing. Tuesday as usual.

Today, as you will see, I am including entire albums as well as single tracks… the advantage of ‘the youtube’ is that you are able to push the slider along to sample different tracks on a given album. Where I have included a ‘full album’ you should find that each track goes to the next with a naturalness that makes it clear that the artist intended their music to he heard as a whole.
Having said that, I am starting with a ‘single’, from Electric Ladyland, the lyrics say it all.
