Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)
The is the Wakefield Doctrine’s weekly contribution to the Ten Things of Thankful (TToT) bloghop. Each week those so inclined gather (in a blog-linkatory-way) and share lists of the people, places, things and events that merit inclusion in such a list.
It’s good exercise. Heart/Spiritualistically speaking, that is.
Our List for this week is:
1) Phyllis
2) Una
3) the Wakefield Doctrine
4) the Six Sentence Story bloghop.
5) so, a week ago we told the story of the rock and in the course of it mentioned granite. Hostinae cai followed up asking if granite was used in the construction of our house. We said no but promised to find and photorize some residences that did use granite.
Note: for all you geophiles out there, the photo below was taken in the community (actually more a fire district/enclave) of Shelter Harbor in Westerly, RI
6) * someone. but maybe it was in a comment in their own posts. Likely suspects: Misky, Reelika, Chris (though I wouldn’t put it past Mimi to mention bookcases.) In any event, please proceed back to the Present and Grat #7)
7) ok, this is not funny… serially. someone in a comment (somewhere)* mentioned ‘Bookshelves’. So, naturally, our first thought was ‘Hey! What a great Grat!’ (Go back to Grat #6… hey, nowhere in the Book of Secret Rules, aka the Secret Book of Rules does it say linear causality most be respected) So say what you will about grand books and fiction about the tragedy of aging such as Cervantes’s ‘Don Quixote‘ or cinematic delving into the effects of time on culture and the ordinary as inspired by great books like HG Well’s ‘The Time Machine’.
Once the center of our everyday homelife, at minimum serving as jealous guardians bracketing our ‘tele-vis-shun’ the bookcases in our home, have now been relegated to… the laundry room, (didn’t see that coming Mr.-451-Farenheit-Bradbury’ didja?). Below is one of our two remaining bookcases. The five others, required to hold our four-hundred forty-four other books is pictured in Grat #9 (We mean, serially, who doesn’t hear Ecclesiastes 3:6 – ‘A time to keep, and a time to throw away.’ (Not stepping into your turf, Frank, but had an earworm of ‘the Byrds’ totally sneak in the room between typety-types.)
8) something, something
9) our new Ba’al:
10) Secret Rule 1.3
music vids
*gotta comment here. Sure it was among the first ‘music videos’ (no, not video as we know it today) but still! They’re the fricken Beatles and no one thought to control access to the filming session?!?! More than once, if you pay attention to the background (through the hedges), you can see people walking by and …and! around minute 01:00 you can see the guitar cases they forgot to move out of the shot. Still, for some of us, sure takes ya back, no?

I like that stone fence in grat 5. I remember having many bookshelves all handmade with 1 by 8 planed pine boards and wood screws filling up the basement of an ancient house. Today I have many more pdfs than I ever had books and I am glad the days of the card catalog have been replaced with AI in the internet browser. Nonetheless, I still miss those bookshelves and that basement.
ah! card cataloges! had forgotten them! (always liked how far out they could extend lol) I keep meaning to grab an old paperback but my reading style has changed and the kindle lets me enlarge the print! lol
That house is solid and so is its accessory perimeter wall. The heritage house, like a castle, can last generations.
I got to research on John Marrs.
Even your choice of music video has stone sculptures in the background.
Fantastic TToT.
thank you cai (for the original prompt re granite houses) and also your sharing out
Stone houses so often look as if they simply grew out of the landscape, I like them.
In the “Friendly Fill-Ins” of my Friday post, I mentioned the first thing I notice when walking into a person’s home is the bookshelves and what they are interested in reading because we have a library as the first thing you see when you walk in our house. Know what a person reads and you will learn much about the person.
It’s a rather pleasant earworm, as those things go.
ah ha!! thank you for curing my knowledge itch (on where the idea of ‘Show your bookcase’ came from)
We used to have more bookshelves, but we’ve trimmed it down to four, and having looked at what’s in them, I think I should consider reducing the number of cookery books. I am very thankful for them though. Maybe that should be included in next week’s TToT.
Good selection of music this week.
the cook books or the sample (of bookcases)
being a clark, it occurs to me to try and introduce a random element to the excellent idea
second shelf on the furthest to the right (upon entering room)?
not random enough?
will survey Mimi and Frank and the others (somehow)
might need to do a multi-week approach. submit the idea in next week’s TToT and results in the week after
your thoughts?
I’m in for this week: 2nd shelf and far right. (laughing) It’s not a book. Oh this will be fun. One chink in the armour: I’m in southern France from 12-23 Sept, but I’ll have heaps to be thankful for — just no bookcase.
np
we’ll adopt your photo schema (2nd shelf) and when I mentioned far right I believe I was referring to bookcases (when there are multiples) if one then the right end of the shelf?
lol
agree should be fun
Excellent. I’ve already taken a photo for this week’s TToT.
cool
I’ll do a group email for likely suspects targeting next week’s TToT
Me and my three comes and my TV stand at home disguised as a shelf… 🤔
excellent* looking forward to it
*happy you are one of the three personality types of the Wakefield Doctrine that doesn’t let reasonable and reality stand in the way of expressing oneself
