not one Halloween Post!?!? the Wakefield Doctrine (…1,213 Posts and not one Halloween Post! that’s just not right!)

Welcome to… (sorry  do your own scary, radio voice-over audio here)  Velcome to ze Vakefield Doctrine… (the spookiest, most useful and fun theory of  creepy-clarks, scary scotts and… and regulatory! rogers!)

240px-Jack-o'-Lantern_2003-10-31

Yeah, I’m kinda surprised too. How I got through the last 4 years without a Post on the topic of Halloween is totally beyond me. I’ll bet I mentioned it, (Halloween), on a number of occasions, if for no other reason than Halloween is one of the Big Three ( holiday celebrations), and marks the end of Summer!  In any event, all that changes today!

hey! here’s a disquieting surprise! I was about to do a bullet-point listing of Halloween and the three personality types (knowing that this is a clarklike holiday) and I thought to check Wikipedia for a reference, or at very least a good image (I’m a Contributing Member of Wikipedia, so I’m comfortable using ‘our’ images*)… and my stomach turned at what I read.

this (my reaction to my anticipation of the Reader’s reaction, is what I’m finding interesting). I’m finally coming to appreciate that most Readers are more advanced in their understanding of the principles and application of the Doctrine.**  …anyway I thought, “man! I don’t have to even have to explain what it is about this citation that makes me feel…. (something: not pleasant, but more on the wistfully regretful, rather than scared or outraged).  Weird, huh?

Screw this reflectioning, here’s the citation from Wikipedia:

Development of artifacts and symbols associated with Halloween formed over time. Jack-o’-lanterns are traditionally carried by guisers on All Hallows’ Eve in order to frighten evil spirits. There is a popular Irish Christian folktale associated with the jack-o’-lantern, which in lore, is said to represent a “soul who has been denied entry into both heaven and hell”:

On route home after a night’s drinking, Jack encounters the Devil and tricks him into climbing a tree. A quick-thinking Jack etches the sign of the cross into the bark, thus trapping the Devil. Jack strikes a bargain that Satan can never claim his soul. After a life of sin, drink, and mendacity, Jack is refused entry to heaven when he dies. Keeping his promise, the Devil refuses to let Jack into hell and throws a live coal straight from the fires of hell at him. It was a cold night, so Jack places the coal in a hollowed out turnip to stop it from going out, since which time Jack and his lantern have been roaming looking for a place to rest.

(neither the hell (waiting for the scotts) nor the heaven (of the rogers) awww…. poor clark)

Halloween:

  • clarks see opportunity but are limited by their capacity to trust the costume
  • scotts see fun but are limited by the restriction of custom… vandalism is out of favor, organized marches through neighborhood streets are de rigueur what kind of fun is that?!
  • rogers see celebration, but their fun is to be standing inside the door, when the participants come marching up the driveway

(let me know if anyone is up to a vidchat…. I know most will be busy.)

* hey zoe!! …Lizzi    Kristi!  …is this rogerian enough?

middle of the day? re-print?? what the hell, (it’s) the Wakefield Doctrine “…and I’m in a bit of scottian mood”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Saint-Christopher-by-Konr-001

(quick, short little Post from 2013. I got a chuckle out of it. It’s still early, so I have time to work on the draft)

…so lets get back into our little application of the Wakefield Doctrine to one Mankind’s most primal, archetypical, iconic, and pervasive Tales:  the Creation of and (subsequent Fall) of the Adam and Eve.

Eve was created in the Garden of Eden to be the wife of Adam. God decides that “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a companion fit for him.” and in Genesis 2:21–22 it states

“And God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man”

After her creation, Adam names his companion Woman, “because she was taken out of Man.” “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve)

So, Adam couldn’t stand to be alone. He had a world, a perfect world full of life, none of which was inimical to him and he…couldn’t stand to be alone. Yeah, I know what a roger. So lets imagine the scene:

“Hey Adam, got a present for you!”
“God, you shouldn’t have!  …. what the hell is it?”
“Well… I saw how lonely and bored you seemed to be… and you know, I Know how you think and how you could use more of your own kind, so I made you a woman. Well, I didn’t make you a woman! That’d be messed up… what I did do,  was make you another Man …for companionship! But, since I know how you feel about competition… I made him a ‘her’!”
“A ‘her’? What are you talking about, dude?”
“Well this is a person, like you,  wait! no! wait! …hear me out!  I made her from a part of you…. no, nothing you’re gonna miss, But she is not your equal! Sort of the same …but different!”
“So I can tell her what to do and she has to do it?”
“Yep”
“…and you’ll back me up?  I mean, it won’t be my fault if she doesn’t like what I want her to do, it will be the Will of…”
“The total fricken Will of Me!  You got it, bud.  Hey enjoy!”

Fast forward to the Serpent thing, since the Bible doesn’t seem to provide a lot of detail in how Adam and Eve spent their days prior to the apple incident. Probably not doing much, walking around looking at stuff…we’re pretty sure sex was not invented yet, otherwise Eve would have told the Serpent to take a hike.

Then the day comes when Eve is tempted by the Serpent into eating of the fruit of knowledge of Good and Evil and, (for reasons never explained), Eve feels the need to get Adam to join her. Given Adam’s rogerian worldview, like how difficult a sales pitch must that have been?!  (“Adam? I have something you don’t have….”)

So the Question Today is this:

Given what we know about the character and nature of the three worldviews of the Wakefield Doctrine, why do we believe that Eve was a clark, and why do we think that the implications (of this interpretation) are not all positive and encouraging to the clarks reading this here Post here?

ok…. that feels better*

* not as good as writing a new Post, but better than not Posting anything… god! this blogging! it’s such an affliction… chicken pox of the soul, is all it is!

the Wakefield Doctrine (here, a little break in the middle of the week)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

220px-Morning,_Interior_-_Luce

quick review of the Wakefield Doctrine:

  • You live in one of the three worldviews. (On the level of personal reality, the world you encounter this morning will be: the life of the Outsider (yeah, guess which you are), the reality of the Predator (not bad, kinda fun actually, if it weren’t for that occasional self-doubt that pops up at the most inopportune of times, usually when you are about to give someone who’s totally deserving, a good whupping) or the life of the Herd Member
  • Your ‘personality type’ is the collection of social skills, coping strategies, tricks, shortcuts, reminders-of-who-you-accept-you-realy-are-but-know-better-than-to-let-anyone-else-know and things you enjoy doing  just for the hell of it
  • You might have a secondary and a tertiary aspect (but you are not required to). that being said, if you’re still reading this, chances are there is a clarklike aspect in there somewhere
  • hey! I just remembered!  you want to hear the most annoying, disappointing, ‘no-really!-I-can’t?!!?’, coolest and most sophisticated, thing about the Wakefield Doctrine?
  • … the Wakefield Doctrine ‘is for you, not them’
  • yep! you read that correctly, unlike many of the other personality theory systems, the Wakefield Doctrine is not a ‘mirror-coated club’  sorry*

Since you’re all  comfortable with the ‘everything Rule’, lets take a quick look at how the Doctrine deals with jobs, careers, talents, aptitudes, tendencies and all the things that make us good at what we do.

Medical World:  your GP/Internist finds something wrong and you end up with an Oncologist, who recommends surgery (as part of what turns out to be a totally successful treatment). If you could pick one of the three personality types for each of these very important medical people, which would you have be a roger or a clark or a scott?

Legal World: You know you were at home the entire evening that your place of business burns to the ground, nevertheless, the Fire Fighter explains that they found some kind of accelerant and the police at the scene suggests that you come and visit him in the morning. (This is a trick question, of course…. but you still have to pick one of the three worldviews for each of the key people in this scenario. who’s the clark and who’s the roger and who would you think is the scott?)

The point of our little exercise is to remind us that, sure, there are cops who are clarks and, of course, a roger can be a gas station attendant and among the ranks of the career bureaucrats at your local DMV or maybe the Vice Principle at the Elementary School… (a scott? er…. no that’s way unlikely! that new Vice Principle, the one that dresses so well, and is smiling all the time and just seems to be so organized?… yeah, you guessed it gimme an ‘r’ gimme an ‘o’). The ‘everything Rule’ is critical to the use of the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool to help us better understand the people in our lives, in the same way that we insist that ‘personality type’ is not just labeling of your favorite likes and least favorite dislikes, but rather it (your personality type) is simply the characteristic way that ‘you relate yourself to the world around you’.

So forget about there being a job that only scotts do or that there are rogerian careers. Nope and no.  But…. but!  there are jobs that  a clark (or a scott or a roger) is more likely to be successful at than would be a roger (or a scott or a clark).

job: chase people and capture them, drive really fast and make a lot of noise in the process… hang out with other people who like to do the same…legally allowed to shot off guns, tell total strangers what to do and sometimes…. sometimes they want you to put people in handcuffs!

job: put books on shelves, put books away (on the shelfs), push carts (full of book) that have very quiet wheels down aisles of shelves of books, if fortunate, push carts full of books out of an elevator, across a small section of vinyl flooring onto a carpeted section (of shelves of books), speak in whispers, have the authority to require others to speak in whispers, eat lunch while reading without undo fear that someone in will sit down across from you (while turning their chair around wrong ways) and say in a voice against the rules, ‘hey! watcha readin?’

job: write popular (and therefore, commercially successful) books, present stories to a vast number of Readers (while genuinely not being concerned with the numbers of said readers), tell stories that represent the elements of life that you feel that, though you have not ‘seen it all’, you do feel that you know the characters that appear in your books in a way that you are simultaneously proud and embarrassed have come out from within your mind, seek to see, among the people and the fans who come to book signings, someone who knows what you really do, but knows enough not to try and tell you… and not that one, she clearly is misinformed and misguided and you may have to tell her so, but there is still too much to do, to write, to get to that last story.

The Answers to the Quiz?  Well, I couldn’t have any of the clarks or scotts scroll down and get the Answers, now could I? So click here for the Answers

* no, really… it’s one of our first and most favoritist little examples that we came up with when we started writing this blog. “…for most people, when they come across a ‘personality test’ or a quiz/assessment in a magazine**, the second thing they are heard saying is, “honey!  come here!! you need to read this, they so have you down to a ‘T’!!”

the Most Important Principle (of) the Wakefield Doctrine (“…well, actually, it’s really the second most important”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

250px-Dymo_embosser

‘the most important’ Principle of our favorite personality theory? That one is easy! The most important Principle of the Wakefield Doctrine is: we all live our lives in one of three personal reality(s).  We have the potential for it (our reality) to be one of three,  at an early age it happens that we find ourselves in:

  1. the reality of the Outsider (clarks)…another, very useful way to say this is, we relate ourselves to the world around us as ‘the Outsider’
  2. the life of the Predator (scotts)… they would say, ‘life is happening now, there are threats and there are opportunities, life is neither bad nor good, it simply is…lighten up and do something!’
  3. the world of the Herd Member (rogers) the world has Rules, there are 2,398 ways to do a thing and only one of those is the Right Way, a good life is the result of giving your all to find that way and be the example of why it’s the right way

Simple enough, right?  Oh, one more (yeah, a very important Principle): these worldviews?  real. seriously. real as in there are threats and prey and traps to be sniffed out, if you’re living as a scott. that the world is a quantifiable place? why do you think rogers make the best engineers and Chefs? The reason I emphasize this, is that, it is the Most Important Difference between the Doctrine and those other personality systems. That is:  I do not find myself having to: ‘speak clearly, for crying out loud’ or ‘don’t slouch!’ or ‘use apostrophes‘ or ‘great insight, now back it up with some empirical evidence, already!’  because I’m trying to be difficult (well, maybe a little).  I’m doing it because those are coping strategies that works best for a person who is trying to get by in the reality of ‘the Outsider’.  Bottom line? the ‘personality types of the Wakefield Doctrine are not categories, and they are not matrixeseses… does  factoring in…..er factors, place me in a certain group according to my preferences and traits and peccadilloes? No. That’s not what we do here at the Wakefield Doctrine.
The reason I refer to myself as a clark* is that it reflects ‘how I relate myself to the world around me‘.
And scotts are not just Tasmanian devils, (barely able to restrain their enthusiasm), teaching pre-K children with a fiercely protective love and, given half a chance, inclined to throw the class in a mini-van for a road trip to the stockyards, rather than bore them to sleep with rote lessons. No!  they are people who have developed the necessary skills and strategies to succeed in the world of Predator and prey. And rogers know that how they do whatever they do, counts. The fastidiousness that they bring to everything they do, (from cooking a meal to learning to use a compound bow) is simply what the world demands.
To apply the Wakefield Doctrine does not involve: answer(ing) the following questions. (there is no) rate yourself. All that you need to do is ask:  ‘how do you relate yourself to the world around you?

the 2nd (second) Most Important Principle?  ‘everyone does everything, at one time or another’.
Without this Principle, we’d all be sitting on the ground trying to figure out how the Wakefield Doctrine defines: putting a ship in a bottle, taking pride in an exceptional skill with a Dymo label gun, playing guitar louder than anyone, wearing stiletto heels to the supermarket and not looking like a hooker, explaining the secret of the universe (with a straight face)…. nope! this ‘everything Rule’ is all you will need to make the Wakefield Doctrine useful and fun (and) will make you the life of the party.
Rather than get bogged down when someone says, ‘I enjoy being alone! What’s your Doctrine say about that, huh??’  all you need do is infer that person’s predominant worldview and ask (yourself) ‘how does ‘being alone’ manifest in their world (of the Outsider or the Predator or the Herd Member?)’  If you have correctly inferred the worldview of the person, you will then know more about them than you have any right to know…

try it today!**

*to be correct, technically-speaking, it would be ‘predominant clark with a strong secondary scottian and weak tertiary rogerian aspect

** yes, the everything Rule applies to everything, including this suggestion.  ‘try it today’  exists as a (slightly but distinguishably different command in the world of a clark, the life of a roger or the roller coaster of a scott)

TToT the Wakefield Doctrine ‘I was standing, by the window, on one cold and cloudy day’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

(here’s a last-minute replacement photo for Item #7):

20141026_084357_resized

1) the near-endless repository of information that is the internet, for clarks it’s a un-spoken dream come true. To have, within a few key strokes, such a breadth of knowledge and information, and it (the internet and the gnome-like browsers), not only offers information, it helps us find what we think we’re looking for, with only the flimsiest of connections to what we seek.

2) used bookstores… while I have not been in one in too many years, a used books stores is not, (in my experience), simply a store that sells books that can’t make on the shelves of Barnes & Noble.  A (proper) used bookstore sells book that, probably, were never on the shelf of a bright, well-lit, well-organised new book store. And, a new bookstore with their neatly arranged rows will never smell like a used book store. More the loss for the future generations.  The smell of a used bookstore, the smell of time and age, mildew and paper, is one of those environmental experiences that we all have had, but no one has tried to capitalize on: used bookstores, bowling alleys, indoor swimming pools, the lobby of a movie theater, mimeograph printing, and the smell of alcohol in a doctor’s office.

3) (a slight re-statement of number 1) is why lyrics are so subjective… it’s not just that we get don’t understand them, or we learn them incorrectly or that we forget them…. in order to stay in our heads, we have to re-create the song and the lyrics are the one’s that make sense (in our heads). Today’s sub-title is a lyric from an old bluegrass song, ‘Will the circle be un-broken’. This morning, when I searched the lyrics on line, I found at least two variations on just this one line (of the song). I used the one you see, because I thought that those were the words that conveyed the feeling (of the song) the best…see what I mean?

4) I would normally go to a hypo-grateful item here, this Season, the time of year… but, I suspect that, like a song lyric, my experience with autumn will not translate to another’s experience, unless they are matching. (No, it’s not you. I totally lost track of that last statement). Anyway, Fall as always been a …not really depressing,  more conducive to feeling less energetic and, because of that, more prone to the passive negative emotions. In any event, this song (especially the opening lines) totally captures my feeling of Autumn

5) seasonal alert for our scottian friends. Now, we’re not Doctors (here at the Wakefield Doctrine), but we will say that there is a very high correlation between those with a scottian predominant worldview and the incidence of seasonal affective disorder. (Not only are we not doctors, but we couldn’t define Seasonal Affective Disorder, even if promised that we could go back in time to high school and be given a jacket that we could wear that would make everyone perceive us as scotts. Which would make high school so much better an experience, at least until it came time to take the SATs) But….but! the scotts I know who are able to spend even a little time in areas with longer days (during the winter), feel much, much better for it.

6) This is a do-it-yourself Gratitude Item.  You have a clark and a Halloween costume party and a limitless budget, but only one day to prepare. what do you have them go as?

7) The lawn is done for the year. The basic lawn is established and we have re-adjusted our turning-the-car-around habits to avoid driving up on the grass, the rest will happen next spring.

8) Only 57 more Days Until Winter is over!

9) You know, there are 7 Guard Virgins. There are 3 male-based Virgins and 4 of the female persuasion. Fine. Nothing controversial there! We also know that they serve to maintain the integrity of the TToT. That there is a Book of Secret Rules (aka the Secret Book of Rules), guaranteed that there would be Guard Virgins, not because we (collectively) cannot be trusted to not abuse the Rule, but more to allow those who need to bend the Rules due to special circumstance or a transitory condition, the temporary blessings of this bloghop, without inviting anarchy. Like the girl who always got picked to sit at the Teacher’s desk when said Teacher had to leave the room… it was never a boy (though, for those of you out there who are bouncing in your sit, waving your hand at the monitor saying. ‘it happened in my school!!! there was a boy picked to monitor!!!!  we’ll just say, ‘yes, of course there was and he was a roger….roger‘ But you get my drift on the SGV. We have them because we need them, we need them because we know how someone always is, and therefore, if we start to picture the Seven Guard Virgins, in their dressing rooms (no, totally not co-ed)…. if we sneak up, the accents shaping the conversations we overhear are somehow familiar.

10) even though I still start writing this Post early on Saturday morning and then don’t get to come back to read/write Comments until the end of the day, I am grateful to Lizzi for creating this thing, and even though we don’t get to chat as much, (she has those AP classes that, (we all knew she was destined to be moved up to)….and cheerleader practice…. which we also knew that she could do, even when she didn’t… when we pass in the halls, the look we share is still the same one that goes all the way back to the beginning, the look of knowing what the world is like inside…)
