‘Life imitating art’1 and the three worldviews of the Wakefield Doctrine…if you don’t believe yourself, who can you believe?

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Rene-Magritte-The-Lovers-1928

You knew this wasn’t going to be a simple, conventional, easy to ‘get’ approach to understanding the behavior of the people in our lives, didn’t you?

To recapitulate briefly:

the Wakefield Doctrine maintains that we live our lives in one of three worldviews (personal realities). That what others refer to as personality types are, in actuality, reflections of our efforts to contend with the world as we relate ourselves to it. Further, the Doctrine would allow that,  if we correctly infer which (of these three worldviews) the other person is experiencing, we will know more about them than they know about themselves. The Wakefield Doctrine is intended to be used as a tool to aid us in these efforts, meant as a perspective (on) the lives and behavior of the people around us that, correctly employed will lead to a greater understanding of why people do the things that they do.  Unlike most other personality systems and ‘theories’, the Wakefield Doctrine offers nothing that you can directly impart to another person. Your use of the Doctrine can only lead to a better understanding of the other person, the Wakefield Doctrine  will not serve you in any efforts to:  convince another person to act differently, treat you better, stop that annoying habit, know you for what you really are, quit smoking, have more frequent sex, show the world the side that you know is there, get ‘A’s, eat less, lose weight, get a better job and, finally start helping around the house. The Wakefield Doctrine is for you, not them.

If you learn and apply the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine to your own life, then you will be in a position to not just improve your life and circumstances. You will be able to improve yourself. As a person. A person who must interact and deal with people who: you work for, who work for you, those you love and those you would love, those you hate and those you would rather not be distracted by, family, friends, the man in the car at the gas pump ahead of you and the girl who delivers the mail. They are all a part of your world today and that is what the Wakefield Doctrine is intended to be used on. And….and! the best thing about using the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool in your efforts to self-improve yourself is: you do not have to do anything that you are not capable of all along.

So, first step:  read up on the worldview of the Outsider (clarks) and the Predator (scotts) and the Herd Members (rogers), now what? Now, the fun. Observe the people in your life. Fact of the matter, if you are still reading, it is a pretty safe bet that you get a kick out of ‘people watching’. Pay special attention to interactions between people. Find one person in your daily life and start with them. You have three personality types to choose from… go ahead and throw out the one you know they are not!… ok! now keeping the characteristics of the 2 remaining worldviews in mind, which seems to be more consistent with the behavior of the person. Don’t worry about getting the answer fast…they are not going to change their worldview. The more you observe them, the simpler the choice will be, no… the more inevitable the choice will be! This is the fun part. Put yourself in their head…go ahead, they won’t know!

  1. does the person seem distant…un-emotional when they should be emotional, emotional when they should not be, do they seem to shy away from attention, do they mumble when you know they are quite capable of speaking clearly, does their fashion sense seem a bit… conflicted?  boots and mini-shirts…too much jewelry, is their posture really poor, are they funny in a quiet surprising way?
  2. no way! they are quick and seem to be everywhere but they won’t know what you are doing, relax…do they seem to probe and challenge constantly? are they funny and aggravating and do they always seem to push it just a little too far? when you imagine ‘being them’ do you feel envious and then excited but at the same time, glad that you are not them?
  3. always have an answer…not in the form of new information, in the form of ‘the last word’, very comfortable to talk to, seem to always be listening, attentive without any curiosity, do they seem to be looking for the right way to act when regarding others or the wrong way to act when others are the center of attention, they nurture without warmth, are seductive without excitement

That should be enough for Part 2.

1) Anti-mimesis is a philosophical position that holds the direct opposite of Aristotelian mimesis. Its most notable proponent is Oscar Wilde, who opined in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying that, “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life”.
The philosophy holds that art sets the aesthetic principles by which people perceive life, and does not imitate life. What is found in life and nature is not what is really there, but is that which artists have taught people to find there, through art.

Halliwell asserts that the notion that life imitates art derives from classical notions that can be traced as far back as the writings of Aristophanes of Byzantium, and does not negate mimesis but rather “displace[s] its purpose onto the artlike fashioning of life itself”.
In George Bernard Shaw‘s preface to Three Plays he wrote, “I have noticed that when a certain type of feature appears in painting and is admired as beautiful, it presently becomes common in nature; so that the Beatrices and Francescas in the picture galleries of one generation come to life as the parlor-maids and waitresses of the next.” …His…understanding that “the real world does not exist…men and women are made by their own fancies in the image of the imaginary creatures in my youthful fictions, only much stupider.”  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_imitating_art)

Monday the Wakefield Doctrine *three personality types, three benefits…three part series*

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

23140241_BG1

the Wakefield Doctrine is predicated on the idea that we all experience the world, to a certain but very significant extent, as a personal reality. These personal realities (referred to as ‘worldviews’) can be categorized as: the world of the Outsider, the world of the Predator and the world of the Herd. The Doctrine further maintains that everyone finds one (of these three) as their predominant worldview at a very early age and what many call personality types and traits are simply the aggregate of behavioral strategies that the individual develops as they mature, in other words, their personality type reflects their personal reality and not the other way around. Lastly, the Wakefield Doctrine holds that while everyone lives their life in one of the three worldviews, we all retain the potential inherent in the other two worldviews; in a sense ‘the other two’ represent the personality type we might have been. Unique in perspective, very productive in application and fun to apply in one’s day-to-day life. the Wakefield Doctrine offers the opportunity to ‘see the world as the other persona experiences it’ and by doing this successfully you will be a in a position to know the other person better than they know themselves.

Personality Type I:  ‘the Outsider’  clarks  the world is forever ‘out there’ (as opposed to here where they are), clarks are insatiably curious, doggedly persistent, fearful in the conduct of their lives and courageous in defense of friends and family and selfless to the point of self-destructive all in service to their attempts and efforts to find a place in the world around them. clarks think

Personality Type II: ‘the Predator’ scotts, action oriented believers that the only good action is the aggressive action, their world is a simple world of predator and prey, fight or flight,  eat or be eaten, scotts are quick to offer help, the first to act, un-shy to the point of promiscuity, mercurial in temperament and violence is within their nature, all without being vindictive, they are natural leaders of whom it may be said, ‘a scott is often wrong, but never uncertain. scotts act

Personality Type III: ‘the Herd Member’ rogers  live in a world of connectedness, they are naturally social and gregarious, they are judgmental and impartial, rogers live in a universe that is inherently quantifiable and there is a Right Way to Do Things, where scotts are the conquerors and clarks are the innovators, rogers are the civilizers. responsible for the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Library of Alexandria, rogers invented the Dewey Decimal system and yet, are the first to burn books. Without the rogerian influence, stable society would not exist in order to repress the individual spirit. rogers feel

Benefit 1: to know yourself (for clarks)

Benefit 2: to know the other person (for rogers)

Benefit 3: to gain the advantage through better understanding of the other person (for scotts)

Ten Things of Thankful #21.5 the Wakefield Doctrine ‘of sharing and Letters of Transit… it’s Sunday morning, relax!’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

...gonna claim me a Salt Flat and marry me a Mormon

While it is totally permitted,  (TToT Secret Manual Seventh Ed. v. 23), I am going diverge from the traditional Second Weekend List for 2 reasons: 1) I have fallen nearly totally behind on my Commentation on the other Posts this Week and b) Dyanne.

First things first, the photo?  Above is the first photo from the first Wakefield Doctrine RoadTrip. It is the view from the rental car ( Company Motto: ‘no! we want you to drive these at 100 mph, they’re rentals!’) as I drove West on Rt 80 outside of Salt Lake City.  I post this photo today because it is a graphic representation of how grateful I am for the Wakefield Doctrine (…sigh of relief from stage left).  There is much to be said for the Wakefield Doctrine and road trips and …home movies (…intake of breath from stage left), but today I thought I would try this variation of my expression of the TToT.

For any new Readers out there, the thing we do here starts with a List of Ten Things of Thankful, the thing we have here is a small (but growing) community of people who, (for reasons as varied as their geophysical location), contribute a list of things in their life that they feel grateful for and we do this each weekend. What these Lists really are, of course, are insights into lives.  and that is so the cool thing about this here bloghop here, this sharing. And, speaking for myself here, it is not just sharing in the traditional ‘girlie/it-takes-a-village sense’! There is also a ‘hey!-look-at-this-chainsaw-I-just-bought-lets-find-something-to-cut-down vibe! (At least there can be, depending on who shows up here on any given weekend…which is Cool Feature Number 16! a growing core of ‘regulars’ here at TToT-ville. A constantly changing group, sort of. In any event, what gets created here each weekend is becoming more and more what Lizzi’s original vision for this bloghop.  If there is a term like tabla rasa except that it would be applying to an active exchange of ideas among like-minded people, it would go here:

Anyway, that my neutron gratitude list for today. I would list all of my co-hostinae individually here to thank, but my  Post this particular Sunday is more about the total group of people who are participating here this weekend. I’m invoking one of the Secret Rules because I want to see the different benefits that come from the creation of a ‘space’ like the TToT bloghop.  A virtual place that allows people to exchange: thoughts, ideas, things-that-piss-them-off, ambitions, fears, doubts and hopes.  And even if it lasts only 2 days, that’s still pretty damn cool  plus…plus!! you can post photos and videos and pretty much anything you might want to share with the ever-change group here.

(Speaking of videos!  here is the first video of the Wakefield Doctrine Road Trips… when I got to where I was going in the photo that heads this Post. Adult language tastefully used!)

“the dame is afoot!” the Wakefield Doctrine ‘yes, I have a rationale for that phrase, this is the Ten Things of Thankful # 21!!’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

20131026_091811_resized

(to paraphrase Arthur Conan Doyle): “If you first eliminate the simple and direct, what you have left can only be the clarklike!”

so to take my borrowed advice:

1) Thank you to Louise ( at Hexagonal Patchwork ) for doing such a stand-up job as one of the Ten Things of Thankful’s 9 hosts (motto: “no! he’s not as strange as he sounds when he writes…wait a minute, I guess he is!”). She would make my efforts (to participate in this bloghop) much more…tenable by her own Post Lists being so direct and accessible and … well, it was always a helpful springboard to getting my own List written. (and, in a sense, I guess I am doing it again! we YChromes can be such users!)

2) Speaking of ‘such‘! Melissa!! hey… home on dee!  (I would go on with the completeness-challenged phrases of greeting and camaraderie, but I’m kinda in a hurry… (again! we Y’s are always in a hurry… at least we go to lengths to foster that impression!) I am certain that Melissa will be the Best 10th we’ve had here at the TToT.

3) Kristi!   (no, not thankful for her, per se…. just trying to keep the gratitude items down to earth. I totally meant it in the opening reference to Arthur Conan Doyle, when I run our of simple and direct, watch out. For the record, I can state this: I don’t have the slightest clue what the rest of the list will look like, but I do know two things: a) I will be referencing Jak and Dyanne, 2) for whatever reason, I choose to believe that if I type enough words, something resembling a reasonable Grat List will emerge from the chaos and c) I do enjoy and admire Kristi’s work… girl gots ‘kəˈhuːnəz’  (metaphorically speaking, of course)

4) jeez! am I only down to Number 4?  Thank god it’s not Number 2

5) Hey! what an frickin ingrate am I? remember last week? the ‘I-won-a-prize’ item? (sure you do, it’s right here)  well, while I was typing the above line item, what should arrive in the mail, but my Prize!

6) I am grateful to Janine for the Prize-that-I-did-not-realize-I-won!  (iTunes card for Fitty dolla!)

7) grateful to Jak for the suggestion on how to celebrate the Silvery 25th Postaversary of the Ten Things of Thankful

8) while I am grateful for the mis-directed enthusiasm for the potential of nude bodies, cakes, celebrations and farm animals (yes, Christine we will be turning to you and the heartland for key assistance in realizing Jak’s dream)…vis-à-vis cakes and celebrations and such

9) ….and since we are on the subject of the 25th Post Celebrations, should they get out of hand, (the life of a blogger can be lonely, the drives become so pent-up and frustrated…the slightest spark and) we have FireGurl Dyanne to turn to for aid, assistance and First Response!

10) (your name here) is totally grateful that this is Item #10 and hopes that tomorrow’s list will bring the realization of normalcy.

Lets see if we can get away with the above Ten List…

Friday or Monday! Friday or Monday! the Wakefield Doctrine ( is it still a costume, if no one thinks you did anything different for the party?)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

‘Finish The Sentence Friday’  is one of three bloghops that we (try to) participate in each Week.  So, today being Friday, it is totally reasonable and understandable that, as I crossed back into the land of  ‘awake people’, who should appear to me but:  Janine and Kate and Stephanie and Kristi?

succubi

I was enthusiastic, as always, in anticipation of writing for today’s prompt, but then as soon as I sat down at the computer, I was, all like,  ‘what the hell! I got nothin!’

Don’t get me wrong, I did participate in Halloween as a child, walking with my friends, up and down the streets of my neighborhood,  asking strangers for candy! And I did wear a costume… really stupid costumes…mostly a ghost, i.e. a sheet or an old pillow case with 2 eye holes and a mouth-hole that instantly got breath-wet and kept moving to the side of my face. This was in the olden days. There were no organized parties (at least in my life), there were no parents in cars waiting at each house, there was just us, brown-paper grocery bag in hand, one flashlight and the expectation of getting through the night and have tales of candy to share with friends at school the next day ( a brief moment of ‘belonging’, my passport being the candy I brought as proof of my successful participation).

But, the trouble this morning was all too simple. I could not imagine an experience in my life from a Halloween that was: a) cleverly funny, b) heart-warming, or c) inadvertently revealing of the events that lead to my present self. Nothin! So, as I often do, I resorted to searching through the Doctrine blog archives, hoping to find a ‘Halloween Post’ that might inspire me.  You can imagine my surprise when I turned up …not a single Post in all  910 Posts of the Wakefield Doctrine!

This, while surprising, immediately become the inspiration that I was hoping for. Knowing that I had not written on this topic before meant the field was wide open! I had a starting point, i.e. the three personality types and Halloween, the rest was easy. Since this is FTSF Halloween and there are four bloggerini, the first thing I did was look for some holiday-centric imagery to ‘jump start’ the creative process,  and it was only natural that I thought … succubi!! In any event, I still don’t have a ‘Sentence Finish’  but I have a cool image and a premise to talk about the Wakefield Doctrine.

The Wakefield Doctrine and Halloween.

While a clark would not be comfortable being the center of attention (and therefore, the object of scrutiny), can there be any doubt that Halloween is ‘the holiday of clarks‘? Don’t believe me? Try this experiment: gather as many people in a room as possible.

  • scott, your problem will be keeping the numbers down(…tell ’em, ‘Hey!! look, this is an experiment, I can’t use all of you but I promise that I will personally abuse/tease/predate each and every on of you sometime today…except those of you who think you really are my friend… I’ll ignore you completely… no, you’re welcome”.)
  • roger, you will immediately anticipate the nature of the experiment, then start to question (pretending to be making a helpful and well-meaning suggestion) whether you want to take a chance on getting everyone in your group upset and disappointed and angry but then you remember that there will be a scott there and you’re all for it.

Gather the group, get their attention and say, “Please raise your hand if you wouldn’t mind being someone else”.

Count hands.

Those are your clarks.

Candy corn anyone?

oh!  yeah!!  Damn!  I almost left out the prompt!!     “One Halloween I …dreamed I was a real person
