“…is the opposite of repetition, to do nothing at all? or rather would it be, to resist any impulse towards action?” the Wakefield Doctrine and it’s Sunday Morning, yo

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Very great Saturday Night Drive last night! In attendio were: Cyndi and Denise and Jennifer.
It was very:

  • a) interesting:  adj.   yeah, I know, scotts are making bored noises and rogers are looking for other rogers (or possibly scotts) to make ‘pity-the-weird-person gesture at/to or
  • b) boring: adv.  as the scotts look for something to happen!! a fat woman and a banana peel, a skinny guy and a bucket of water balanced on the top of a door… something!! preferably a loud something
  • c) challenging:  verb  as clarks race to keep up with each other like golden, (or other hued) retrievers running down game in an open field where the grass is about 3 feet high, they run and you see the grass parting from their bodies pushing through the grass occasionally they jump up above the grass and look around and then back to the scent that seems to go everywhere

The Week Ahead!

clarks will start the week with careful plans that, by Tuesday, will mutate into creative adjustments of goals and strategies due to either surprising success or, (not so surprising) setbacks; the best indication that you are a clark is your inability to know immediately which of these two are preferable
scotts will start… hell, there is no ‘start the week’ with scotts, they haven’t stopped from last week. We were talking last night about the natural friendship between clarks and scotts, and it was sort of agreed that one of the primary reasons for this is that clarks are neither prey nor predator… so the first encounter between the two starts (as it always does) with the scott ‘pushing the shoulder’ of the clark (this is a ‘ranking challenge’ that is a part of the pack life of scotts).
Now clarks are, most of the time, a pretty laid-back bunch.. hell! we’re basically passive…but not because we are weak or we believe that the  other person is too strong… clarks are (perceived) as being passive simply because we’re busy! in our heads… doing things and thinking things and imagining things and projecting scenaria and a whole bunch of fun, engrossing stuff… but what we are not is on guard  (I’m gonna go out on a limb here, but I suspect the reason we’re comfortable walking around with most of our minds somewhere else, is that we have such a total…confidence?…reliance??? something… in our ability to take care of a problem   if it becomes necessary.
Otherwise,  we’re off wherever this reality or another… )
…about the scotts?  oh yeah!  so they come up and see us looking passive and they try and mess with us and the part of our selfs that we assign to keep watch on the ‘real world’ is usually amused and goes along with it.  Of course, eventually the scott, like a puppy, lets the game get out of control and starts to nip a little  and, if it catches us off-guard (yeah, like that ever happens lol) we instinctively box their ears…  being natural predators, the scottian personality doesn’t get all hurt feeling-y  they just either run back for more or roll over and expose their soft underbelly    and a friendship begins!
rogers…they will be at work tomorrow, maybe a little late but will have tales, detailed tales of their weekend with special emphasis on how so much more satisfying a weekend it was than the story you make the mistake of relating first… then as you begin to get anxious to start your job, they will most likely preview their day ahead, with a side note about someone else who is not part of the conversation.

But thats all for tomorrow. Today is Sunday!  A day that clarks know should be special…. a day that scotts barely stop to notice and a day that rogers feel more at home in than any other day of the week.

(Ok  given how wonderful a musician Larry is, we can sit through his little interview at the end of this vid…. free DocTee for the first person who correctly identifies Larry as a clark or a scott or a roger)

“…all work and no play”, finish the Sentence Friday …Doctrine-style

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers).

Today is Friday, which means this will be a “Finnish the Sentence Fryday Poast”*

Seeing how often I present the Sentence (to-be-finished) incorrectly (mis-remembered, slightly different wording… it’s a clark thing), I decided to cut and paste the phrase/sentence.

“One time when I was bored out of my mind, I…”

  • lay in my bed as a 10 year old who couldn’t fall asleep and decided that the most productive and worthwhile way to spend the early morning hours (2-3am) was to try to remember (in order) the theme music for all the TV shows currently on the air …in order (from Sunday Night to Saturday Night)  and!  and whistle them**
  • thats about all I can come up with
  • no, wait a minute! …nah, never mind
  • …it really wouldn’t quite qualify as (the implied) response to a state of excessive boredom
  • but… I really need to give something more than a couple of interesting photos, a music video that you would do well to read the Parental Advisory label attached thereto… or check with Terrye real quick (as to how inappropriate it might be)
  • but the thing is…. (what? this frickin bullet point thing is still on??!!)
  • well then turn the goddamn thing off!!!
…better.
I was about to say, the thing is, as a clark I am almost always in a state that an (un-informed) person might describe as bored. But… at the same time I am never, ever bored.
How can this be?  Well, it all comes down to the definition of the word ‘bored’
Boredom is an emotional state experienced when an individual is left without anything in particular to do, and not interested in their surroundings.  (our friends at ‘the Wikipedia’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boredom)
Well the thing of it is, clarks are never in a position of being left with nothing to do. That is because the inside of our heads is…simply so large that there is always something to do; like that friend you had as a 10 year old who had more comic books/dolls/easy-bake-ovens/toys than you have ever had over the span of your short life. And this friend never seemed to be interested in the treasure trove in his/her closet. Like that…. the inner world of a clark is so damn big because of our:
  • imagination:  there is always the possibility of another possibility
  • creativity: if there is no such thing as ‘never’ or ‘totally perfect’ then we will never run out of things to create
  • loneliness: which is not the same as ‘sadness’  it is more a case of being here and everyone else  being over there
  • drive…to get in with, to be accepted, to be invited to join, to be a part of
So a clark is never bored.
We can, at times be: tired of this shit, how many times will I have to try and fit in only to have someone say, ‘what’s she doing here?’; really discouraged after all the work I did and telling myself a thousand times: ‘just don’t act weird, just relax and enjoy it‘ and the first person I meet in the day asks, ‘hey! how are you?‘  and I think about it before answering!!  They do not expect a well thought-out answer, they are expecting me to give them the I-am-a-real-normal-person Password… and I fail to pass the test…and when I get my work done/finish the test/arrive early  way, way before anyone else then I can escape to the place where I am happy being creative and inventive and accepted and recognized… until the Teacher/Manager/Friend says, ‘hey clark!  are you just going to daydream your life away? come on back to the Planet Earth with your co-workers/classmates/other parents/siblings’
…what? 600 words already?
Damn… that my FTSF contribution.
(Better watch the volume on this video here, yo)

*…ok, clever idea with a half-life of  13 words. damn! I must be growing up (or older) as a writer-to-be, but I can’t see trying to do a whole 300+ word Post doing the same-sounding, wrong spelling gimmick

**  yes, my parents (father, specifically) came to my bedroom to tell me to stop

‘…of maps and territories, when you get down to it, reality simply is where you were’ the Wakefield Doctrine ‘Road Trope 2013’ (…slight de-briefing)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Back from ‘Road Trope 2013’. (We apologize for the poor sound quality. What the gentleman with the Wakefield Doctrine hat (on his damn head) is saying is, “by Right of hat…I claim this as property of the Wakefield Doctrine. …Paul is dead”)

And, as any clark will recognize, (and tell you, directly and/or indirectly), a personal experience, good or bad, doesn’t do anyone any good until it can be shared. Readers of the clarklike persuasion will know this intuitively, however, for the benefit of any scotts or rogers out there, we say: (this sentiment) speaks volumes about the worldview of clarks. You would not be unreasonable to wonder, ‘why is that? isn’t it enough that you had the experience? Of course, we would love to hear about it, but surely it is not necessary in order for you to enjoy the travel?’
Well, that would be, in fact, a normal reaction for a scott or a roger. Because their worldviews, that of the Predator(scotts) and the Herd Member(rogers), do not have the oddly intimate relationship with others that is the secret hallmark of the clarklike personality type. What the hell are we saying? Well, I’m glad you asked!

clarks, as everyone knows, live in a reality that is characterized as that of the Outsider. Not just: strange, weird, shy, quiet, off-putting but in a nice way, hardworking, loner, if-only-you-would-make-an-effort-not-to-be-so-different-you-could-be-happy, you-have-so-much-to-offer-why-do-you-have-to-be-so… but simply not ‘a part of’. So what, in this rather clearly defined worldview, accounts for what we are calling an ‘oddly intimate’ relationship with others?

It is the fact, that for a clark, an experience isn’t ‘really real’ until it is shared with another.
No, stop! I did not say that an experience is dependent on sharing with another person (so, why would you go and think that?) and I did not say that clarks need to share their experiences with others (although there is a certain element of that in this concept) and I did not say that clarks want to share what they are or what they do with: family or friends or the people at work or the other tourists (and yes, we will end up saying that that is exactly what clarks strive to do).
The ‘intimate relationship’ that clarks have with the world around them is a function of their status as an Outsider. We use the adjective (and possibly adverb) ‘intimate’ quite deliberately.
What happens for a clark, when telling the folks back home, at the job (‘…you were on vacation?‘) or in Home Room (‘…hey! somebody said you had mono!’) is intimate in all senses of the word.

It is intimate because for a clark to do something deliberately, like a road trip, starts with an idea and is developed and nurtured and perfected. If you read the Comments from Readers in the last Post you will see interesting characteristics that are in common among them ( I mean Cyndi and Janine and Melanie and Denise and Amy and Michelle and Dawn and Rich and them….)

Making an experience ‘really real’ by sharing it with others is necessary because most clarks (and scotts and rogers with sufficiently strong clarklike secondary aspects*) are creative. And one of the understated requirements of genuine creativity is that one must live in a world in which the real and un-real mingle. The imaginary (“...if only she would talk to me, I know I could ask her out“) and real (“…this interview has to lead to a job offer“) are part of the landscape for all clarks each day they wake up (and is there for scotts and rogers when distracted or driven to distraction).
All of this is to say, since clarks cannot assume to share with others, the other members of the pack (like scotts do) or the other members of the herd (like them rogers), it becomes necessary to reach out to the world and by doing so let the world see what you see. If this is not an example of being intimate, then I don’t know what is.

Hey! I went to Winslow Arizona… come join me (lol, I’m a clark… that you were standing there with me is as real as only clarks can know…)

there, and nearly, back again …the Wakefield Doctrine Road Trip 2013 (slight return)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

A quick Post as I sit in my room at the Hilton Garden Inn somewhere in Phoenix, return flighting early this morning and, with the benefits of a little time dilation/rollback, should be back on terra familiara by the end of the afternoon.

clarks really are an odd bunch, non? Would a scott or a roger:

  • study the maps covering the area to be travelled, knowing fully well that there will be a GPS with the rental car
  • spend nearly 8 hours in the car and (an average) of 15 minutes at each tourist attraction(s)*
  • enjoy the driving even more as the weather conditions went bad (and we mean really enjoy as in ‘get excited and laugh and look for the video camera)
  • look upon the entire process (of travel and road trip) as possible evidence of a life well spent
  • compare what they have accomplished to people they know, not to feel superior to but to feel worthy of attention/ interest?

No, I gots a feeling not.
And, even by this blogs standards, the above should not resonate too strongly even with other clarks. There is some weird kind of after-effect that follows travelling out of my comfort zone. Not entirely bad, not simply good… it’s complicated. …you know, clarklike.

In any event, back to the grindstone. Will catch up with everyone beginning of this week.

Naturally we will have a location appropriate video.

* actually the Meteor Crater skewed the numbers, Winslow was about 5 minutes (not counting stopping in the gift shop conveniently located across the street).
