Saturday Morning, the Wakefield Doctrine, read fast! there’s a whole day waiting out there!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Today we present a video, previously scheduled for yesterday (Video Friday) pre-empted by the seriously fun, amusing and challenging, ‘Finish the Sentence Friday’ ‘blog hop’ put on by Janine and Kate

It was our practice a few years ago to always provide a new and interesting insight into the Wakefield Doctrine with each and every Post.

So for today, a brief re-introduction to everyone’s favorite, non: -proslytizing, -pamphlet-handing-out-in-airports, -bake-saleing, -hit-yourself-on-the-back-with-branches, -required-to-listen-to-guys-with-briarwood-pipes-in-their-hands, -risk-your-soul, -do-I-really-have-to-read-the-whole-thing personality theory!

the Wakefield Doctrine maintains that we all live in the world, ‘slightly apart’ and we all relate ourselves to the world in one of three characteristic ways: as an Outsider (clarks), as predators (scotts) and as members of a herd (rogers). When we correctly infer the worldview of another person, (or ourselves), we are in a position to understand much, much more about them, (or ourselves) than we might otherwise.
Even better, the Wakefield Doctrine says that everyone, all of us, are born with the innate potential to relate to the world in each of these three ways. And even though we all ‘settle into’ one of the three (becoming our predominant worldview), we always retain the ability to experience the world as do the other two!
Think of the possibilities when it comes to: breaking bad habits, learning a new social skill, asking that girl at work out, explaining to your husband how you like to be touched, seeing that your second child is not so odd, knowing that the job you really want is not so out-of-reach, becoming comfortable with the parts of yourself that have always seemed to cause you pain.
Yep! it’s all right here! So come and read and learn and imagine and have fun.

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

    Here’s the reminder from the “Fraterday” (term I coined for Friday’s in Florida – how it pertains to the work force’s attitude towards Fridays) vid to tell the story there was no time for today!

    Good vid! Informative! The Doctrine is as effecitve as the person “using” it. That is to say it’s all you want it to be. May take a little time, but the time will come when you can effectively change another person’s behavior (towards your own self by how you act towards that other person). The notion that once you understand the reality a person lives in is extremely powerful. Put that together with an understanding of your own (damn) self and you have the recipe for change. Or improvement. Or whatever other adjective you want to use to describe moving forward effectively and happily through life. I know this to be true.
    Is there a catch? Sure. There’s always a catch. It means taking responsibility when relationships “change”. But don’t be scared ‘cuz it all comes down to you – how you act, react etc. The cool thing is you will have options that include altering, ending, encouraging, growing any relationship that was, is or could be.
    Guess that’s why they say “the Doctrine is for you, not them”.

  2. First off, thanks again for linking up yesterday and putting off this post for today, instead. That said I always learn something new when I come here and for that I thank you. I love how you break it down so easily and make it relatable to everyday life. So thanks so very much!!

      @Janine

      I do appreciate being included in your blog hop! Don’t tell anyone* but I am enjoying coming into contact with people with different viewpoints and damn fine writing skills… all upside for me. (What a interesting surprise to some of the people doing the hop.**)

      *lol
      ** lol

  3. I’ve read this several times and I still can’t work out which of the three I am. I keep coming back to it and see a bit of me in each. Maybe I’m just indecisive? I’ll ponder it for a bit longer!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Mama Marmalade

      no! to the contrary… you o have elements of each of the three, (some people have secondary and tertiary aspects that are quite developed, especially, for a variety of reasons, the people we encounter online.) The trick to this is to think in preponderances, predominates …there are a number of ways to ‘check’ on which of the three worldviews you are living in…the good news is, ‘you can’t get it wrong’ if you are a roger then no matter how comfortable a scottian view of a certain environment (say, work) may feel…and you may even act in an aggressive, direct manner (as a scott would), but you would be relating to the situation as an Outsider.

      Here’s a couple of ‘tricks’ to narrow down the process, if you can comfortably identify with this view: “I am here and the world is out there” then you are predominately a clark if you believe there is a Right Way to do things and that the universe, while complicated and confusing at times, is essentially a quantifiable place… try the rogerian hat on… and so on. It’s all about how you relate to the world around you..most of the time.

      Plus it’s fun thanks for Commenting… we have a call in on Saturday nights thats kind of fun too

    So wait: you’re saying that I could morph into a scott or a roger!? Could my personality change enough that one of the others could become the predominant worldview? Golly, that would be kinda cool because lately, I’ve really been disliking this introverted life in the country and need some living in the city. My internet and phone services suck out here, lol.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cyndi

      No

      …even better than that! You have the capabilities, the capacity to experience the world as a scott or a roger. You don’t leave anything behind, you add to what you are… it’s kind of a little word-intensive, but it boils down to relating to the world as a roger or a scott would, while not having to un-do or break down your current worldview. Totally more to follow!

  5. Steve Crabtree says:

    I am a Roger. After extensive hours of study of the WF doctrine, I have determined I am a Roger. Even after taking substances, drinking excessively, drumming like a madman, demanding people get outta my way on the freeway, folding my arms when others talk, I can safely feel secure I am a Roger. Now mind you, it takes some time to determine your label, but I am certain of mine.

    I’ve logged, probably 1054 hours studying this doctrine, and I am sure I am a Roger. And, just by that statement, alone, tells you I am a Roger. Now go buy me some chick-peas and cower at the large black man who just bumped you in the supermarket, as you dig for change to pay for your item. And, yes, you don’t mind standing in line, but – A ROGER would never do anything but say – these are the WRONG chick-peas. We Rogers know we are Rogers. That is what makes us a Roger. If you are unsure? You ain’t no Roger, pardner!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      …I’ve logged, probably 1054 hours studying this doctrine… that statement, alone, tells you I am a Roger.

      lol perfectly said!

      (hey btw have I mentioned how ridiculously cool the internet is, musicalistically speaking? Well it is, I am, in point of fact, listening the album ‘The Allman Brothers Band'(1969) in it’e entirely… I remember liking it back then, but jeez the whole damn thing is just so good!)

  6. Downspring#1 says:

    Steve! You roger you! Just as my statement “showcased” my clarklike persona, so too your comment. LOL
    It’s amazing how once you know the Doctrine, you can, with a preponderance of accuracy, guess a person’s predominant type – clark, scott or roger by their comment. You look not simply at the length of the comment but of the words used, how they’re used….blah, blah blah as the Capt. would say.

  7. Steve Crabtree says:

    @clarkscottroger = YES, the internet has changed the musical landscape. Music Industry, as a whole, is having trouble ‘adapting’ to the NEW (yes NEW) way people obtain music. First we had 78rpm records, then 33rpm LPs, then 8-track tape, then cassette tape, then came the CD. OMG, the CD is gonna replace these cool LPs!

    And, they did – sorta. Some audiophiles still prefer the old turntable and warm, analog sound of LPs.

    But, with all the new social interaction and websites sprouting up, it is damn near impossible to keep up with royalties, rip-offs, and general chaos within the companies such as ASCAP and BMI. They have been slow to adapt to the new way people get music i.e. youtube, Pandora, Spotify, etc. I get ASCAP DAILY, an email sent to all ASCAP members, and not ONE DAY goes by without the links to “how do we combat all this chaos?” I think it is Rick Rubin, producer, who said the CD will disappear within four years. So – since Pandora’s box has been opened via the internet, it IS impossible to keep up using the old method record labels have used since the 50s.

    We are in a major shift. Good for the consumer, BAD for the artist/songwriter, labels. Royalties aren’t even being paid by Pandora – NONE! So, some artists in an attempt to garner attention and sales, are giving their music away FREE on the net. Hoping this will draw some interest and get them some real sales of their songs. Free hot dogs, anyone? We are in a free-fall, with no net in sight involving this dilemma. Some savvy artists are just starting their own labels, why not? Of course, I value my old collection of LPs, which is significant, and own three turntables. Have tons of CDs, as well. As well as old, downloaded songs from the Napster days. Yes, I was guilty, but being a songwriter-drummer-artist, I saw this as taking money out of my pocket and the music I downloaded from the artist. Now, iTunes and Amazon are selling songs one by one – in the OLD days, you bought the entire LP. Now, you can pony up .99 cents and get one song. The artists gets about a nickel.

    So, enjoy the Allman Bros because those LPs are worth more than money – they are part of your life! Things have become so complicated, that I can’t see straight. Even if you wrote, say a hit single, would you ever see any money? I doubt it. Most of it goes to the big labels and you are lucky to get enough for a large sub sandwich. We are truly at a turning point – which way will it go? That is the problematic question. Maybe CDs will be gone in a few years, then we will only be able to obtain music ONLINE. Oh boy!

    Didn’t you used to love looking thru LPs in the racks? Finding the art on the cover? I have a book of album art, an art that has all but disappeared. Nothing like reading the liner notes on an LP. Right? That warm, analog sound coming from your speakers. Yeah, guess I’m getting old, but I, as a member of ASCAP, who reads the Daily from them, have a sinking feeling that Rubin is right. Hold on to those old LPs. They will remind you when times were good, life was simple, and music was GREAT!

      the thing for a clark is simply access to the most diverse, varied and otherwise encyclopedic source of information possible. pre-internet a good Sunday would be spent in bookstores and magazine shops in the morning and late afternoon to read and listen to music

      this is close and much more convenient… I am about to click on Led Zeppelin IV on the youtbe… damn!
