“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” (C.Dodgson) the Wakefield Doctrine and a new Friend from across the Sea

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and roger)

(Allow me to indulge in a bit of egocentrism and simply say, “damn! the number of interesting, exceptional and overall cool bunch of people I get to meet writing this here blog here…very excellent job” This is nothing new to the more habituated Readers, but the Wakefield Doctrine is with some sort of weird personality-darwinism vibe, has the result of the people who manage to beat their way through the convoluted prose that oft grace these pages and understand what the Doctrine is and then,  and then step up and actually write to us. Yow! Be they clarks (well mostly) or scotts (we can see your eyes in the underbrush) or rogers  (like that Steve fella…) all the people we have met here have contributed to this thing in ways that we probably don’t yet fully appreciate. But, speaking on behalf of the Wakefield Doctrine, “glad y’all could make it!”

Which brings us to our newest DocTee-wearing-lifeform. From a land that seems to have more than it’s fair share of clarks, Jenny is a part of the ‘New Generation’ here at the Doctrine; this is the group of people who learned about the Wakefield Doctrine solely from the blog. People such as Molly, Claire, Nell Rose, Jasmine, Steve. We all know that to ‘get’ the Wakefield Doctrine takes a person with something we refer to as ‘flexible intelligence’ which is to say more intelligent than average but with the capacity to decide on the rules (for applying this intelligence) a quality not as common as you would think! Jenny is joining a great group*.

Let’s all say “ello, Jenny” to our newest Wakefield Doctrine-TeeDoc-wearing Friend of the Doctrine!

We first met Jenny back in June of this year when she stealthed-up on us  with a combined  Comment/test scenario ( “Essay Questions… “), with little fanfare, as gentle an exegesis as one might hope for, she be saying :

“Right, here we go then! I’m a Clark, definitely without question, so I sometimes may overthink things! I’m open to suggestions… “

As you can see from the follow-up Comments from the others, Jenny totally fit right in ( yeah, a clarkfitting in… go figure ). We are looking forward to watching the influence and input from Jenny as we continue our efforts to put the Wakefield Doctrine in a form that anyone can read, enjoy, understand and use! (Jenny also convinced me to sign up for ‘the Skype’ so there may be a transcontinental element to our Drives… or radio show! Looking forward to our exo-American delegation taking the Doctrine to the Old World.)

welcome, Jenny

* not to leave out those others…the skilled in ways that allow the appearance of casual un-informedness, only to find yourself backed into an intellectual corner…like a mouse being stalked by a cat with a secret Phd that would be DS#1 and Ms. AKH and of course, the progenitor roger

Ambition, Self-consciousness and the Monkey’s Paw Effect, the Wakefield Doctrine

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

(DownSpring) Molly said something on last Saturday Night’s Drive that has stuck with me this far into the week. The conversation had found itself, somehow, on the topic of the Wakefield Doctrine book Project, and when I started to give an update of the progress I have made, I found myself hesitating. This reluctance immediately became the focus of the conversation. I offered that my hesitation was an expression of clarklike modesty, but that did not quite ring true. I offered that it is a quality of the clarklike worldview to avoid the appearance of willful self-promotion or self-aggrandization, saying that I find myself uncomfortable with the topic. Molly offered that clarks will, as a rule, avoid making pronouncements of goals and/ambitions (primarily) to avoid future disappointment. The scotts in the car could not, of course, identify with that attitude, but concurred with the observation of how it plays in the world of a clark.

(Yes, I know! you scotts and the rogers out there are saying,  “My god! where the hell is that phone number, I cannot miss calling in next Saturday night at 8 pm EDT”* )

How does this tie in with the Monkey’s Paw Effect? Once again, we must look to the Representative from the Large Square State in the Western US, and the context in this instance is ‘the Facebook’. Molly posted one of those ‘sayings things’… not sure what they call it over there, one puts up a photo or a saying or something and people stop and read it and comment on… (sort of like a blog, except there people actually do take the time to write a Comment). In any event, what she put up on ‘her Wall’ was the saying,  “Be careful what you wish for — you just might get it.”
Now this is a saying that totally resonates with clarks. My Comment (in return) included a reference to the famous story “The Monkey’s Paw” (W.W. Jacobs) but more with the emphasis on what is called the Monkey’s Paw Effect. Which, as we all know, is the result of the tendency of people to proclaim a desire for the seemingly un-attainable, without a proper consideration of the ultimate cost of satisfying their desire.

The Wakefield Doctrine  holds that all three personality types may suffer the consequences of (the) Monkey’s Paw Effect, but in markedly different ways, and as is often the case,  it is the context of one’s encountering the Monkey’s Paw Effect that is most telling. An unattainable yet irresistible desire:

  • for a clark it might be something that would dispel the distance between themselves and the world, to become famous or rich or desirable
  • for a scott it might be something that is pleasurable, enjoyable and would increase their ability to be alive and alert
  • for a roger it might be something that will confirm the reality that exists for them, that there is an abstract good, a right way and it would bring all others into harmony

The Monkey’s Paw effect might then be that:

  • a clark finds that by attaining what they desire, they have become the person for whom the desire holds little value
  • a scott finds that to sustain the ‘joy of the hunt’ they must think of themselves as hunters/predators, which introduces the element of deliberation and self-awareness
  • a roger confronts the fact that true homogeneity, though simple and desirable leaves no room for individual perspective, the essential element in appreciation

So there you have it! A simple story, a telling moral and three personality types.

Oh yeah!! Hold on, DownSpring roger is toying with the notion that getting Readers and Followers and Comments (from same) is a worthy goal for a blog writer… I know, I know!!  Hey everyone!! if we all clap our hands at the same time, maybe it will dispel this corrosive, self-destructive, funny-eating notion from his mind!  Lets all clap…   in any event go over to the Relentless Obsession and write him a Comment!

the Wakefield Doctrine: it’s ‘Easy Week’ at the ole Wakefield Corral

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

DS#1 has posed the question:

Someone get that roger his bird water…tell him he’ll have to settle for slipper socks.
The peanut M&M’s are a go as is the Chardonnay. Cheese platter?! Fine.
Cheetos will be allowed on premises only if accompanied by an equal amount of Fritos. (regular ones, not those weird scooping ones.)
The cubanos – yes, I mean the cuban cigars. Have them personally delivered to my dressing room by Antonio Banderas. Yes, seriously.

Silly, no? But what about the very real possibility. Of a radio program. Who doesn’t have a radio show these days. Seems to make sense. At some point the Doctrine will be saturating the market. Why the hell not? I, for one, have already started using terminology on a more “day to day” basis. You know, getting comfortable with it. The theory of clarks, scotts and rogers….it is what it is

Since the corollary topic appears to be centered on the ‘state of the spirit’ of the current effort to spread the Wakefield Doctrine among people inclined to ‘get it’,  I will state, for the record, that I am in the midst of a project that involves my rogerian aspect.
(Compressed backstory: my rogerian aspect jumped out* recently and manifested in my workplace, effectively putting me in a position to host an after-hours social event for the other brokers in my office. Not surprisingly, the initial reaction to my emailed invitation has been mostly “WTF?”  This is totally appropriate as I am a clark and have assiduously cultivated a business persona so as to include a certain non-social aspect…nothing anti-social or in any way an impediment to my work, but lets just say, I am sent invitations to the annual Christmas Party only when a new person is in charge of organizing it. So today there is a certain level of anticipation regarding tonight’s affair, if for no other reason than the contrast between my established business persona (a clark) and this episodic persona (a roger!). Oh yeah, many of the attendees are ‘aware’ of the Wakefield Doctrine and, I would like to think, they are watching to see if I can pull this off as a roger.)

So lets get all ‘water cooler’ on the Doctrine this week! No lessons (at least for now) but if you care to Comment and start another ‘conversation’ or wish to Comment on either of the two threads established in today’s Post, have at it!

that is it for this week! …the Wakefield Doctrine (and T-Bone Walker) say: “tomorrow’s Saturday, go out and play!”

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine ( the theory of clarks, scotts and roger)

The Wakefield Doctrine’s Internet Radio Program Sign-up Sheet

Positions Open:

Producer

Marketing

Regional Reporter/Correspondents

North America:

  • Western Zone (the larger, blockier shaped States)
  • Middle Section ( those flat ones with straight highways and news footage of cows on roofs during flooding)
  • “Michigan” (reserving one of the “you wanna see a really great lake?” States for Friend of the Doctrine Mel)
  • Texas and down there ( …them states what know how a man’s supposed to live and such)
  • Southeast (hey, anyone who wants to live there, deserves to be the one who reports from there)
  • Northeast (why, I would imagine they are referring to the area where one might find Wakefield! how charming!)
Those other countries:
  • England (or the ‘UK’ as the natives seem to like to call it)
  • Scandinavia ( is that a country or a state of mind?)
  • Any other part of the world where someone will report from for the Wakefield Doctrine
So send us your Comments, resumes, curricula vitae, rap sheet, or any other expression of the desire to do this thing.  It will be a good thing. We are thinking: Nell or Jenny for the UK  and, of course our Ms Claire for Sweden (Claire sends her warmest regards and greetations to all her friends at the Doctrine… totally immersed in her work and her studies, she did find time to say “Huska du”!*)
The basic ‘plan’ is to figure out how to get one of those internet radio things… and the, just go on the ‘air’ with the Wakefield Doctrine. No real program designed yet, however, as you can see from the ‘positions’ above, I am thinking:
General News of the Day (through the lens of the Wakefield Doctrine) and then go to ‘the field’ and have individual Reporters give us the local/ Regional News and such.
Progenitor roger seems to find this idea exciting (he will, no doubt, insist on a contract and that (in that contract) he be allowed to broadcast wearing fuzzy slippers), I haven’t asked Mel yet… have hinted to Molly and DS and ‘KH  but no firm commitments (I think their actual responses were something like “there, there, thats a great idea, there there“. And I was thinking that our man in havanna, Steve Crabtree that he be on-board for something like this, provided we can coax him out of his shell enough to talk to strangers  and I totally think that Jasmine would get a kick out of reporting on the Corn Futures Index and the state of the Levees or what other items of local interest prevail in the middle part of the country. As far as our foreign correspondents (mentioned above?) … lets surprise them!
Still, no pressure… hell!  all or most of you out there write blogs, you know that the memory span of most blog readers is ‘half past ‘what-were-you-saying?’  But seeing how the Doctrine is on a one-a-day Post kick this week, I thought I would get to (radio show) out there and start the conversation.
More to follow, will discuss tomorrow on the Drive. Don’t forget to call, yo.
* I did IM with Claire the other day and she does send her regards and best wishes to y’all.  I made up the thing about saying “Huska du”

the (get that tape ready!!!) Wakefield (what do you mean, ‘you feel guilty?’) Doctrine Retrospective Thursday!!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

You know…. there was a time, before they invented “cable tv” that the three major networks stopped running new episodes of TV shows on or about the end of May and did not start again until just a week or two after the school year started.* So, I was thinking, if it was good enough for me, what the hell makes you think you are better than me? huh? what?

So Re-runs it is!!  (some Classic Moments form the Saturday Night Drive Series!! )

… not exactly Saturday Night Drive (but the first of the video Road Trips!)

and here’s a favorite:

And finally here’s a fairly recent one… nearly everyone is there!

(love the voice!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8–eVepZi_k

*I totally remember that, if for no other reason than, the unfairness of it all! The better new shows were, in those days, run at 9pm  and on a school night the parental units insisted that sleep was more important than ‘the Man from U.N.C.L.E.’  (and people wonder why there is global warming, random mass shootings and (global) terrorism!!  “hey Mom! hey Dad!  they blew up another building full of people, way to go with the TV rules!”)
