Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)
This is the Wakefield Doctrine’s contribution to the Ten Things of Thankful (TToT) bloghop. Foundered in 1767 by a charwoman’s daughter, her first effort to spin the gold from the dross was met with skepticism. Which, in rural England in the mid-1700s, was not attitude anyone sought to elicit from Readers. With the help of a defrocked monk by the name of Percival (no, no relation to the other, equally clueless Percival), L.R. found her way down to the coast and settled in Manchester. Under an assumed name, total makeover and a renewed determination to, (paraphrasing a descendent, ‘not get fooled again‘), she continued her efforts to point others in a better direction.

4) the Six Sentence Story bloghop. This week’s Six of the Week comes from Frank Hubney with his way-fun storyette, ‘Heart‘.
5) the Unicorn Challenge (ceayr and jenne‘s no-it-doesn’t-look-like-two-starfish-gettin’-frisky-lets-go-to-the-next-card) photo-prompt ‘hop. This week’s Pick of the ‘corn comes from Doug Jacquire with his ‘My Station is Here, After’.
6) We were spared excessive frozen water accumulation this week. But, as Mimi, (our senpai in all matters gratacious), would remind us, ‘Never mind that! Be thankful you have a glass’.
7) Speaking of graduate-level gratitudining… the photo at the top? Ayiiee! One of the two carrying beams of the bridge has broken. (Did someone just say, ‘High Risk Wooden Bridge Repair… ordeal!!!!” lol) stay tuned. Open to suggestions as to cool mods to make. (P has already suggested ‘Rope Bridge’ Will spare you the meme-level icon movie scenes. But, prob-not.)
8) something, something
9) continuing project at work, wading through uncertainty is such a gift, i.e. ‘It’s right there. You define the character of the future, not ‘them, it, or those’.
10) Secret Rule 1.3 (’cause what good is it to be in a club/association/gathering/pack/herd/random-concurrence if’n some of the rules aren’t, like, hidden from view?)

From the little that can be seen at the photos, maybe the foundation beams that run the length of the bridge need to be buffed.
And perhaps tranfer some of their weight pressure with ropes to those handy trees at both ends; which ropes might even serve as ” emergency rails”.
ah! the old ‘Another construction step or two and you can move up to suspension bridge’ temptation. lol
I agree as to the under-engineered aspect of the current design (basically 2x6s sistered into double beams on either side).
The simplicity of design is more a recognition of the limits of my carpentry skills (the rope element in your suggestion is kinda tempting, seeing how my years on a fishing boat took any fear of ropes and their ability to secretly connect themselves).
of course, this (in the picture) is at least the fourth iteration of channel crossing. non-pressure-treated wood (due to the sensitive environment) simply does not last (very shaded area doesn’t help)
though I may try to sister a temporary splint, enough to make it useable while the new bridge is constructed (in the warmer times)
Sorry about the bridge. I’m guessing fording the stream on a regular basis is out.
for the time being… (as I mentioned to Nick below) this is number 4 (or 5) so all we have to do is wait for the seasons to change. (Will resist the temptation to get all Ecclesiastical on this Reply lol)
Poor bridge…say, what about some steps, raise the height of the bridge? When the flood waters come, you can look down from on high (lovely vision in my head 😁)
#9 yeah, I hear ya.
well, being bridge number four or five, we should have construction done pretty good by now
Oh dear, it’s too cold and wet, and the poor bridge. Never mind, spring will be here quite soon for you in the north.
thank you for the reminder. (all ready we can see the additional daylight (on non-cloudy days))
You didn’t let your bridge watch the galloping Gertie video, did you? Sorry it broke, though. More blog fodder!
lol no! Always!
