Monday -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Continuing with our renewed effort to present the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine to a new(ish) Readership, let’s focus on identifying the three personality types in the ‘real’ world.

You, in your journey through the day will encounter: friends, acquaintances, near strangers, totally-strangers, people you have seen before and, in theory, people with whom you’ve never crossed paths; depending on the form of your reality, there will sales clerks, police officials, teachers, co-workers, supervisors and sub-ordinates and they will all share one thing in common.

They are in your world.

(Big lead up, questionable close? well, yeah.)

The reason ‘They are in your world.’ is the jumping off point is to remind us that we, all of us, act, interact, react and hide from some, none or all of the things that make up our world.

Where the Wakefield Doctrine comes in and becomes more useful than it should be, is that it, (the Doctrine), is about how people, (all and more than the above), relate themselves to the world around them. They relate themselves as best they can, given the character/nature/style/form of the reality they are experiencing. (Quick note: all reality is, to a small degree, personal. The common world is full of semi-solid things, people and institutions and such. The personal aspect of reality and the world waiting for us on the other side of sleep-closed eyes, is grounded in our lifes and experiences.)

The Wakefield Doctrine describes three ways we relate ourselfs to the world around us:

  1. as Outsiders(clarks)
  2. as Predators(scotts)
  3. as Herd Members(rogers)

The most difficult approach to learning to use the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine is, when encountering a person, to ask yourself: is this person experiencing the world as an Outsider would or are they living the life of a Predator or are they simply Members of the Herd?

The fun way is to read enough for these posts to acquire a list of behaviors and characteristics of the three worldview and be on the lookout for them.

See, the thing about the Doctrine is, and the way it is different from those systems where you checkoff a list of behaviors and interests, likes and dislikes and then add up the score to see what category they fall into, we start with the reality, (one of three and only one of three), in which the person developed their ‘personality’. In this world/reality (that of the Outsider or the Predator or the Herd Member) we all developed our coping mechanisms, worked out the social strategy that gave us the best shot at being a successful lifeform. Using the Doctrine is simply a matter of remembering the characteristics of these three realties.

A clark mumbles, puts their hands to their faces way too much, acts shy, expresses genuine creativity and constantly moves in the shade of ‘real’ people, acquiring a small number of friends and hordes of people who can’t remember their actual name. These behaviors and attitudes, (among others), are the strategies that works best for the Outsider.

A scott shouts, moves quickly and decisively and acts on their impulses without second-guessing because the world they grew up in was in no way different from the nature-unplugged world of the predators we all know and love (from a safe distance): i.e. lions, tryansauri rexeses, hawks, sharks and the like. To live for the moment and in the moment is the strategy that best serves the Predator.

A roger is confident and self-assured because the world in which they formed their personal style is the reality of the Quantifiable and Certifiable. They are good team members because everything worthwhile in the world is related  on some level. They know the secret to a successful life among their peers, (the Herd), is to discover the Right Way to do things. The ambition held in highest regard among Members of the Herd is to share that knowledge.

Thats all we have time for today.

TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Once a week we gather at Kristi’s place and swap tales of the world and the reality bandwidth in which we live. The theme of the blogposts we write and link is gratitude but the execution of the sampling is, of course, in the hands of the individual. Some are meticulous and spare, others introspective and fashioned from the joy and sadness that is our collective lot in life. All are skilled and well-considered, mature and thoughtful, both in the subject matter and expression.

And, there are the posts from the Wakefield Doctrine.

1) Una

2) Phyllis

3) the Wakefield Doctrine personality theory, perspective on life and the world and everything and a way to crank people-watching up to eleven. You really should check it out.

4) serial stories: ‘the Case of the Missing Fig Leaf‘ and ‘the Whitechapel Interlude

5) Deers and Such (Younger Readers: Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler were sort of the Jennifer Lopez/Pitbull duo of the day… in nature shows.)

6) (well, I did say on the video above that this would count as 5 and 6… far be it from me to self-contradict myself)

7) Interesting work project. 21st C real estate is about being visible on social media and while we all have listings in MLS an such, it doesn’t hurt to try something a little more aggressive. So I’m working on a online/video/zoom/whatever series of live seminars?(real short, like 10 minutes so maybe infomercial might be the better word)… in any event, if we do it, it’ll be a series of weekly Tips/Advice/Insights on buying and selling real estate. Did I mention I was a clark? (See Grat Item 3 above)… hey, I do claim that using the principles and perspective of the Wakefield Doctrine is totally efficacious in self-improving oneself. Besides, this is going to be a two person project and my fellow agent is a scott. If this actually manifests in the common reality, I’m sure to be assigning episodes a place on my list.

8) THIS SPACE AVAILABLE for them of you what don’t feel comfortable writing a full post, ’cause, (secretly or not) you would rather not risk a public censure for style, or far more likely the tepid acceptance of virtual people writing from an unimaginable distance away. Send in a sample, I’ll post it here.

9) Six Sentence Story the only place to read (and, if you’re so inclined) practice the fine art of short, short, really-short story writing (SSS motto: ‘Semi-colons?! We got a warehouse full of ’em. You got a problem with that?!!‘)

10) Secret Rule 1.3 (from the Book of Secret Rules aka the Secret Book of Rules) which allows us to take our feet off the pedals for the last two mailboxes, and glowing with a sense of competency, a feeling of the rarest sort at that, (or arguably any), age at the precise matching of distance and momentum as you coast through the open garage door, the smell of summer-old grass and a tincture of gasoline, your reward.

Friday -the Wakefield Doctrine- “I’d unravel every riddle for any individal in trouble or in pain.”

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

At last! Friday! With all its pressure to make the cost of the weekdays feel worthwhile, and most of its promise to allow sufficient enjoyment to believe we are not all running on invisible hamster wheels.

New Readers (and not-so-new-Readers) Here is our challenge for the weekend:

  • Find the clarks in your world and let them know that you know (but won’t tell anyone)
  • Spot the scotts (there will be one among your immediate social circle and at least one just out there) Make them laugh at something/anything*
  • Identify the rogers (to whoever said, ‘Like that’s gonna be tough, they make up 2/3s of the population‘,  we retort: “Hold on, we’re not done with the assignment.”) Get within conversational range and compliment them, then leave before he/she can reciprocate.

Any questions?

Quick Guide to the three worldviews:

  1. clarks tend to dress in a way that doesn’t look quite right, but not in a negative way. There is always something creative to the fashion/dress of a clark (in our North American culture, females enjoy a range of sartorial expression not normally enjoyed by their clarklike brethren, so why wouldn’t one make of the most of the metal and lace palette and employ a palette of color visible only to lifeforms more comfortable in the fluorescent end of the spectrum). When you spot a clark, make no sudden moves or otherwise draw attention to them, or they’ll blend into the woodwork faster than a chameleon on amphetamines in a pile of saw dust. Best way to let them know you know: listen for the jokes they mutter, the two of you will be the only ones laughing.
  2. scotts ….well, scotts they’re there, thing is, its best (for the purposes of this assignment) that you spot them first**. In fact, the challenge in this….err challenge is to spot the scott before they spot you… good luck.
  3. rogers… ok, don’t have to look too hard… well-dressed, (by local conventional standards), friendly and at the center of a moving spiral of people (if there are enough people) Warning: if you are a clark, do not attempt the challenge if your target Roger is not alone or has less than four people around them….
[Ed. Note: Yes, there is a correlation between the predominant worldviews of the Wakefield Doctrine and the three main characters in the Wizard of Oz. I mean, it’s as if the idea of a clark, scott and roger were, like, some kind of universal principles! lol If you’re trying to decide how to associate the three, remember, the Doctrine is about how a person relates themselves to the world around them.]

* extra points for it being a scottian female

** there is zero question that, once you’ve entered into their environment, (social, physical, sexual…pretty much all the ‘als’ other than spiritual, lol), they will notice you and interact with you if, for no other reason than to establish ranking***

*** total, defining dynamic in the world of the Predator

Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade 1941

This is our Six Sentence Story post.

(The) Six Sentence Story is a bloghop hosted by Denise.

Each week she provides a prompt word and invites us to write a story around it.

One catch: the stories must be precisely six sentences in length.

This is an ‘Ian Devereaux week’, so the Six that follows is (also) the latest installment in our serial story, ‘the Case of the Missing Fig Leaf‘ (click on the title to the chapters that got us here.)

This week’s prompt word:

BOUTIQUE

The power of the engines suffused the cabin, a sub-vocal tone both powerful and beyond reach, an endless mantra, reminding us, hurtling through the sky, 565 mph at 35,000 feet that we all exist in a temporary magic spell.

Pulling myself from the insides of my head, I glanced to my left where Leanne was pretending to read her Kindle; like a mute ventriloquist, I aimed my eyes at her face while staring at her body, now hidden beneath the boutique cashmere throw blanket, ‘gild the lily’ came to mind, causing a whispered smile to start shouting.

“What!?” two-thirds of a chuckle kept her dark-comet eyebrows from linking up, ready for a fight; sensing my retreat, Leanne did something most of my gender is incapable of perceiving, resulting in an avalanche of dark, sleep-confused hair to partially cover her eyes and, for the millionth time since puberty, I marveled at the eternal teeter-totter playing field that was the preferred venue in the battle of the sexes.

Fluttering the length of her blanket with the cruel finesse of the experienced matador, she continued, “I know about your half-degrees from Harvard, your time on a commercial fishing boat, but the detective thing, what psycho-social trauma convinces a man, intent on living the Chandler/Spillane/Bogart mythos of the tough-as-nails detective to name his agency, ‘Desiderata Investigations and Conflict Resolution Services, LLC?”

I decided to answer her question honestly, “My greatest regret is not getting beat up as a kid in grammar school;” seeing her eyes focus on something I feared might constitute a secret passage into my head, I quickly added, “Given that our European field trip, in a small but very real extent, involves mainstream religious dogma, I’ll contribute a personal belief, ‘The fruit Adam and Eve ate of wasn’t the knowledge of good and evil, it was acquiescence of fear as integral to human existence.”

Leanne Thunberg, tenured professor at Radcliffe college, extensively-published academic and one of a handful of people with the key to my heart, stared at me, eyes flaring as curiosity and caution fought for control; I had a moment of ambivalent uncertainty, like seeing a combination of Jane Goodall and Lara Croft walk into a safari camp, the jungle behind her full of predators waiting for a sign.

Wednesday -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

While I do have a Six Sentence Story to complete, I want to write one more ‘new Reader’ post. (That this decision warrants mention in the opening line is, I fear, more a reflection on how much I’ve ‘slowed down’ than of my busy writing schedule.) The thing about (writing) Wakefield Doctrine posts is that is still, at this point, eleven years and 2200 posts later, an activity that returns more than it takes.

Jael is our honorary ‘New Reader’ and, evidenced by her comments on the last two, three posts, she has the basic principles down enough to sense that this thing might not be a horrible addition to her reality. (As opposed to: folded-back-on-themselves-bobby-pins-constructed-by-6th-grade-scotts-to-use-on-classmates, overhearing-parental-discussions-of-which-relatives-would-get-which-child-without-hearing-they-were-talking-about-cousins-not-you and …dentist visits. lol)

I confess that in the last couple of days, as I run already-written ‘This is the Wakefield Doctrine’ posts through my mind, I’ve considered going into the archives and re-posting a couple of ‘the really good ones’. (Who’s a clark? lol) (This provides a hint at one of the ways we resist self-improving ourselfs, but that’d be a whole ‘nother post.)

The Wakefield Doctrine is more about the relationship of the individual to the world around them than it is about favorite colors, likes/dislikes, talents and weaknesses. That said, It does not hurt to read about the distinguishing characteristics of the three worldview, in fact, that’s where the fun is:

  1. clarks(Outsider) born curious, clarks remain on the hunt for the new, novel and unknown for the entirety of their lives, they are looking for the facts/information/secret-handshake that clearly everyone around them was taught, clarks are the only one of the three to wake up in the morning with the sense that the world was out there and they needed to make their way carefully, lest they be discovered. clarks are the truly creative (of the three), which doesn’t help finish up the search for the missing piece, now does it? …limitless possibility can be a curse as much a blessing
  2. scotts(Predator) to jump around our description of the three types, scotts are the easiest of the three to identify. never at rest, mercurial (think Joe Pesci in …well, in any movie), scotts are fearless and they are impulsive, as a result they tend to be heroes and the cause of 90% of the emergency room visits in your local hospital, scotts are confident to a fault and make excellent leaders… they may be wrong but they’re never uncertain and….and their eyes. Easiest way to spot this personality type in that they are never not paying attention, they are always aware of what and who is going on around them… try not to sneak up on them
  3. roger(Herd Member) live in an orderly, if not neat world. In a sense, they are the opposite of clarks, they belong…. doesn’t matter to whom or what, they belong and that is the linch pin to their reality, they live in a world where there is a Right Way and a lot of other ways and it is their duty to discover and share the Right Way. The universe is quantifiable and that is the beauty of things, it all makes sense if you just appreciate the Rules. rogers make for excellent: accountants, scientists, lawyers (prosecutors not defense), chefs, over-bearing nannies and fire fighters

oh, yeah, a couple of other pointers about the Doctrine overall:

  • the Wakefield Doctrine is gender neutral. There are no special types simply because they are male or female
  • the Wakefield Doctrine is culture neutral (see the part above about how this is all about relationships)
  • there is something called ‘the Everything Rule’ which states ‘Everyone does everything, at one time or another’ reminding us that the three personality types are distinguished by how a thing/activity/interest/hobby manifests in an individual’s world, there’s no such thing as ‘thats something only clarks/scotts/rogers do’
  • the Wakefield Doctrine is for you, not them. The insights do not comprise club-shaped mirrors, (“Oh, honey? I found this personality quiz in the newspaper/on-a-site and they have you down to a T.” )
  • clarks think, scotts act and rogers feel
  • The Wakefield Doctrine is a remarkable perspective on the world and the people who make it up and, used with sufficient skill and diligence, you can know more about the other person than they know themselves. Yet, it is not a transferrable wisdom, aka you can’t use the Wakefield Doctrine to change another person.

Ok, enough for a Wednesday!
