riday -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘of vidchats, serials and sentences to finish, all in less than 500 words!’ (yeah, I know !)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

sexual-performance-anxiety

not much time, only a small supply of words!

Finish the Sentence Friday  (FTSF motto: ‘they’ll think it’s easy and fun, then when they find themselves tangled up in their own heads, like wearing a soaking wet running suit to a first date, it’ll be too late to back out! ha ha!’) brought to/at/for us from Friend of the Doctrine, Kristi and Vidya and Kerry (‘kerrr ri! vidchat tonight, yo’).  the fragment:

In 2015, I learned….

that when we strive to improve ourselves, the hardest part of the process is to inform ourselves of our success. Whether it is a minor change, (“I will eat more foods that are healthy for me”) or a major change (nah…. don’t bother trying to make a distinction, they’re all major), I’ve found that I all too often neglect to update the self-image I have of myself, as I engage in the effort to change. The Wakefield Doctrine holds that personality is about, ‘how we relate ourselves to the world around us’. When we embark on a program to improve, or otherwise alter facets of our lives, most of us will be sure to inform the people in our lives of our ambition, ‘the world around us’.  Even though, at the beginning of the process, we focus intensely on ourselves (in order to identify what we would change and what that change entails), as the process gets underway in earnest, we often fail to ‘check in with ourselves’.

Ironically, successful self-improvement can result in a situation in which all the people in our lives are amazed and astounded, impressed and happy for us and yet, in the secret mirror of ourselves, we’re still seeing the person who started out to improve, not the person that the world observes.

I’m pretty sure I learned that in 2015…. I’d better check, you know how I tend to overlook certain details and over-focus on the grander parts of an idea

Chapter 16 of Blogdominion! “Sister Bernadine reads a letter from a departed friend and learns more than she bargained for about the computer problem at St Emily’s, Orel Rees takes a quiet walk through the Provo facility and makes a little, quite minor, really, addition to the hardware that comprises the server hosting system… Anya Clarieaux, who brought herself up through the ranks, from near fatal anonymity in the secretarial pool at Omni Corp, (yeah, right! like Anya would ever suffer herself to be a part of the background, unless, of course, it served her purpose to do so) and now is about to start a project that Stephen Eddington must decide to become an integral part of (or not!), Anya is willing to do anything to anyone on behalf of the Omni Corporation, (and it’s CEO), she lives for it…. ‘like they say, if you love it, how bad can it be for you?‘ All this and more in Chapter 16! coming to a computer near you this Sunday.  Hey!  go read the whole thing!  You’ll be glad you did! it’s an engaging tale.

**********

Did someone say, ‘Vidchat?’  sure, sounds like a great idea!  same place….Lets plan on a little later start time, say, 7:30 pm EST I’ll post the link where I think it’ll do the most amount of good.  Hey, while I may need to leave a little on the early side, (say, 9 pm EST), cause I have to work on Chapter 16…. my vspouse, Laura needs to stay up all night (preflight 9 am), so bring coffee and a blanket…. with any luck, we’ll get Dyanne to join… no body sleeps when she’s at the party

Six Sentences Stories -the Wakefield Doctrine- my god, is it that time of the week already?!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Hey! It's 5:10 pm look at how light it is!

Hey! It’s 5:10 pm look at how light it is!

Wednesday afternoon! which means it’s time to rummage through my head and see what I can come up with for a Six Sentence Stroganoff  the totally enjoyable writing prompt, courtesy of our friend zoe (who, btw has a new and totally cool new blog, ‘Carrot‘ that you owe it to yourself to go and read! …. after you read my Six, that is!

Actually it’s more like reaching up on a closet shelf, feeling around for something and having a bunch of stuff fall out on the floor.

We have a Prompt word, ‘Cue’ so, lets see what we can find.

Sitting at the banquet table-turned-industrial-modern writing desk, the man watched through the window as squirrels ran frantically across the snow-crusted lawn, from tree to lawn and back again, over and over in repetitious performance of Nature’s graceful Dance of Starvation.  Seeing the squirrels reminded him that it was the day of the week he submitted a story written around a prompt word and he smiled, because he enjoyed the exercise.

With dawning horror and deflating confidence, he looked at the blog, the one that demanded creativity, like messages-in-bottles, cast in the sea, except the bottles were like old glass vitamin bottles and the message within written small and brief, on, like those little slips of paper in fortune cookies with cryptic sayings like, ‘beware of mixed metaphors‘, and saw that the week’s prompt word was different from what he’d thought.

“Holy shit,” he intoned, “how can I possibly come up with a story, it’s Thursday and there are only seven minutes left in the morning!”

He looked at what he had written and slowly a smile grew from the double crescent of cup and coffee.

He held his cup towards the window, and thought that perhaps the animals, near death by starvation, paused and looked up in mute wonder mute, as he said, “Done!”

Monday Tuesday -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘so you insist that the use of this ‘Doctrine’ will improve a person’s 1st 2nd day back to work?’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

If you are of a certain age, you will recognize this person… a high jumper named Dick Fosbury who changed his sport in a fundamental manner as possible. (Look him up)

If you are of a certain age, you will recognize this person… a high jumper named Dick Fosbury who changed his sport in as fundamental a manner as possible. (Look him up)

Why, yes, yes we do.

So, here’s what you do today. When you interact with a person, take a second, in that vast gulf of time, between sentences* and consider the person before you:

  1. do they seem to be too full of energy (wild, spinning-top energy, not deep-in-the-heart-of-the-hyrdo-electric-plant energy), are they impulsively friendly, carelessly helpful and just a touch…. scary?  Try: scott
  2. are you at ease, are they comfortable to talk to, do they ask questions, (related to the topic at hand), that not only are pertinent, but logical (anyone can ask, ‘did you cook for yourself last night’…. but some, upon gaining an assent, will request the list of ingredients, types of spices, brand of cookware, mood-level-while-working-to-prepare and ultimately, whether you would be happy to do it all again)…. go ahead and just put a ‘roger‘ next to that person’s face (metaphorically, of course… unless you’re a scott lol)
  3. you’re sure they’re there, they were just a minute ago, they seem sincere, well-meaning and quite well-informed… what you can understand…. there’s a distant look to their eyes and hunch to their posture and a thing that makes them seem always just getting back from somewhere else… clark

OK, now you’re ready to apply the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine.

The main thing to keep in mind, is that the Wakefield Doctrine is based on the idea that we all experience the world on a personal level. And, in this realm of personal reality, there are three characteristic ‘worlds’; the world of the Outsider(clarks), the planet of the Predators(scotts) and the life of the Herd Member(rogers). Lets use a common situation to illustrate this very central point,

You and I are sitting in a nice restaurant, it’s mid-afternoon, so the Lunch Hour Rush is over and the Evening has a couple of hours before putting in an appearance, our waiter/waitress** come(s) to our table and says, “Are you two ready to order?”

If you are a scott or a roger, what you will be experiencing will be different from what I experience. Same restaurant, same waiter/waitress way, very different personal reality…. so ask yourself,  how would a reasonable person living in a world characterized as that of Predator and Prey, or a normal person react to a waitress/waiter when the world is, by nature, an orderly and understandable place? Because remember, this is not your typical personality theory, where they, like, say or imply, “you are prone to… you have a tendency… your preferences are such and such”. Those are all too common attempts to attribute ‘behavior to the type’, as if they were issued along with your personality (“Hey! clark personality types!!! line up here, here’s ya traits and tendencies, I gots your mumbling and putting your hands to your mouth, and here’s your pre-set choices in fashions all ready: girls? mix and match, gender obfuscation is the name of your game, guys? black is good….”)

The Wakefield Doctrine is different. You have the personality traits that you have, because they are the strategies that you’ve found most successful as you grow from tiny child, fully engaged in the effort to cope with and try(ing) to succeed in a world in which you are the Outsider or you are a Predator or, a Herd Member.

Simple. Right?

HEY!  Chapter 15 is on the newsstands everwhere!  So go read it and tell me if you’re enjoying it. (I’m always curious about who a person’s favorite characters are… don’t be shy  tell who you like the most and who you would like to trip as they walk by!)

* clarks will understand this, if you are not a clark and you understand this, thank your secondary clarklike aspect.  If you insist, a fuller explanation…roger one evening, many years ago, I was in a discussion with a fair-sized group of people, (meaning not on a date or with a friend or two), in any event, we’re all sitting around and the topic centers on the challenges inherent in verbal communication, whether intimate or public, so I figure I should try and contribute to the pool of ideas that was forming (yeah, a lot of rogers there), so, in the next pause, (somewhere between ‘intentional lies and being misunderstood’), I said, “You know, my problem in conversations usually is about what to do with all that time between sentences”   pins hit the floor like anvils off a factory roof.  fun times!

**the Wakefield Doctrine is gender neutral, which is to say, a female scott and a male scott (and rogers and clarks, of course) are relating themselves to the world around them the same way…. their manner of behavior(s) may differ but the similarities totally out-weigh any differences observed. The Doctrine is about how human beings relate themselves to the world around them, not how men or women…. for that matter, lets just remember, this Doctrine is also culture and age neutral.

TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘…of superscript and other gimmicky gimmicks!’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

20160123_083635_resized

Sometimes people, new to the Doctrine will say, ‘hey it’s clever and all, but all in just three groups and it’s kinda too hard to learn, never be practical.’ To which I say, ‘no, you’re totally wrong!’ thereby providing evidence of the efficacy of the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool of self developing oneself. A (relatively) short time ago, I might have responded to this fairly aggressive statement with something that began with, “yeah, but…” had a lot of third person pronouns in the middle and ended with, “you think?”

Below, in block quotes, is an example of the fun of the Doctrine at work. So after coming up with the subtitle, I decided I should check up on the etymology of the word ‘gimmick’, visited my usual sources, etymology.com and a few of the others. No surprises. Just as I was about to come back and get to work on the List, I spotted a listing for a site called ‘Wordwizard’ (it had a feather next to the title, which I think was supposed to be a quill) and a subtitle of ‘for lovers of the English language, switch accessibility mode on’ The site itself was more of a submit your thoughts on (the etymology of words) and the expert host would respond. But that’s not what stopped me and made me grateful for the Doctrine. The following exchange, clearly on the topic of the etymology of the word ‘gimmick’, at the top of the page was,

(Reader John) “I’ve run into “origin unknown” everywhere I’ve checked on the word “gimmick”. I thought it might have come from the early 20th century after General Motors Company used “GMC” as their company letters. Lot’s of new mechanical marvels were introduced at that time by car companies and I thought people might have generalized them gimmicks (GMCs).
Any other thoughts on the subject?”

(site Host) “John, GMC is a good stab at a folk etymology, but I’m afraid that there is enough known about the origin of the word to know that that one isn’t true.

My first thought, actually my second thought as I reacted to the person’s too-plainly illustrated predominant worldview, was, damn what a Doctrine!

Enough about the first 10 minutes of TToT Post writing. I am totally being a 15 year old with my profligate approach to the (unfortunately) finite day’s supply of words! I better settle down and get this done, as I need to get over to Findingninee to read and comment….( gratitude associates itself with the following):

1) Finish The Sentence Friday,  my very first bloghop and the place/activity/interaction where I met most of the ‘people’ I know today… at the time hosted by Stephanie Sprenger, Janine Huldie, Kate Hall and, starring   Kristi Campbell   as    Kristi Campbell   (and co-hostinae Alyssa

2) Six Sentence Story on Thursday, with zoe and them

3) the Gravity Challenge and all the Graviteers:  christine, val, lisa, kristi, sarah and… joy!    (ok… so think ‘Graviteers’, in place of Rocket Man and Rocket Women…. (lol, talk about a construct spinning out of control….)

4) Una  for reminding me each day to not worry about shit that hasn’t happened yet and, instead, to enjoy what’s going on around me, even the annoying things.

5) Phyllis for demonstrating that there is no upper age limit to finding and enjoying the wonder inherent in life, all too often left behind, once we leave (or are dragged, kicking and screaming out of) childhood and mature into adults… wonderment-challenged adults

6) speaking of serials (well, that was back in Item 3… the Rocket Man thing (my own re-edited memory of the past has the term Rocketeers, hence, Graviteers)…but the fact of the matter is that as a young clark, I often went to the movies on a Saturday afternoon and watched the serials that ran before the Feature films… and thereby acquired a sense-experience that has never left me, i.e. going into the theatre with friends on a bright, sunny and pleasant Saturday afternoon and, after the serial and 2 movies, coming out into early evening. …a momentary disorientation in time (and therefore, to my young clarklike mind, place, the world itself was distinctly different).

7) now, speaking of Serials.  Blogdominion  Chapter 15 is due on the stands this Sunday!  Last Week’s Chapter 14 was well received and, by all accounts, an enjoyable read. (Phyllis’s Comment/review-ette simply said, ‘Steamy‘  Do not fall too far behind! )
In Chapter 15: Sister Margaret Ryan attends the reading of Father Noonan’s Will, Detective Maribeth Hartley meets Ed Willoughby at his Office at Omni Corp and they are interrupted by a visit from none other than Diane Willoughby. Stephen Eddington leaves his grandmother’s to meet Anya for a glimpse into the future that she appears to be offering him and Tom Fearing is finding a wall solidifying behind him as he tries to deserve the wonderful life he has. Read all about it! (Remember Chapter 0 is the Prologue and that’s where you’ll meet almost all the characters.

8) the Wakefield Doctrine  (sine qua on, binyons, sine qua non)

9) vidchats, yo…. last night’s was what vidchats are meant to be! the regulars where there (including Kerry, who since the start of this year, has become very much one of the crowd on Friday Nights) and new person Abigail! (who seemed to enjoy herself and fit right in with the mutants that hang out at Café Jetson on Fridays)

10) SR 1.3
