the Wakefield Doctrine (so what, exactly, do you mean when you say everyone lives in one of 3 personal realities?)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine

The foundation of the Wakefield Doctrine rests upon the idea that we all, as individuals, live in what we refer to as a ‘personal reality’. (We sometimes use the word ‘worldview’ interchangeably with ‘personal reality’.) ‘Personal reality’ is defined as, the subjectively perceived character of (an) individual’s role, responsiblity and overall relationship to the world at large; (the) world-at-large includes: people, places and things, relationships, expectations and potential for change or development. In other words, reality. That we claim to define reality in a context looking out from the individual’s perspective, is not really all that radical a notion. Albeit difficult to express, the notion of the nature of the reality as being substantially a subjective process and therefore a product, in part or in whole,  to the individual’s interpretation is not something that seems excessively metaphysical.  We are not, in fact, suggesting that the everyday world that we all experience is comprised of countless individual realities with their own set of rules and definitions. Well, not quite at any rate. What we are saying is:

“…we all are born with the capacity to come to perceive the world as being of three characteristic ‘types’. These worlds are: the world as experienced by the natural Outsider (personality type: clarks), the world as seen through the eyes of a predator (personality type: scotts) and the world predicated on membership/relationship (personality type: roger). At an early age we all ‘pick one’ and the world around us becomes that type of world/reality. We never lose the capacity to experience the world as one of  ‘the other two’, and it is not uncommon for people when first learning about the Wakefield Doctrine to feel that there are times when their personality type seems to change! It is normal to see in one’s own behavior, similarities to that of any of the three personality types. But there remains, for everyone, a primary worldview, and it is the primary worldview that shapes the behavior and results in the ‘personality types’ that we refer to in the Wakefield Doctrine.

The distinction claimed by the Wakefield Doctrine in regards to the characteristics of the three personality types, is that the Doctrine is concerned only with determining the character of the personal reality that the individual is experiencing. There is no need to try to convince the individual to reveal traits and interests, drives and appetites all in the service of ‘discovering the personality type’. The Wakefield Doctrine views behavior and traits, interests and drives as common to all and it is how those drives and traits are manifested in the individual’s personal reality is what establishes ‘personality types’. The Wakefield Doctrine strives to determine which of the three personal realities the individual is experiencing first and foremost, understanding  the traits of the individual follow from that, rather than the traits predicting the personality type.”

It follows that once we can determine the worldview of the individual, we are able to know how a person will act in virtually any situation. The reason, (that we can know this), is because knowing the reality that the other person is living in (and responding to) allows us to  understand not only how the person relates themselves to the world, we will also understand the ‘rules of behavior’ that are an intrinsic part of living in (that) world.  For example: if while at work, you are about to enter a conflict with your superior,  (and  we assume that you knew that your boss was of the rogerian personality type,  you would maintain the greatest advantage (in this conflict) by making sure that it would be conducted in private, as opposed in public in front of co-workers. The reason is that, as a herd member, anything that is perceived as causing the rogerian personality type seen as being apart from the herd, cutting them out from the group, will engender a very negative reaction on the part of the roger.

This, seeing the world as the other person experiences it, is the starting point for understanding the behavior of the people in our lives. To (correctly) infer the type of worldview that the other person is living with is essential. Once determined, the depth of understanding of people and personality and behavior, that results is simply breath-taking. As to how we go about establishing which of the three worldviews that a person is living in, there are a variety of approaches and techniques.  (These) techniques range from physical characteristics to emotional demeanor, even fashion choices all afford the opportunity to pick one of the three worldviews to ‘assign’ the other person. After this initial choice has been made, further checks are made to further confirm our pick. If the worldview is seen to be congruent with a wide ranges of personal characteristics, we know we have made a correct inference. If not, then we try the next most likely worldview and ‘see how it fits’.

After inferring the worldview, what remains is to understand and appreciate the nature of the personal reality of our subject. If we believe that the person we are trying to understand is a scott, then we are framing that person’s behavior against the backdrop of the reality of life as a predator. Sometimes referred to the Initial Behavioral Metaphor, what we would do is understand how a predator views the world and apply this bias to the person. We are not saying that they are (necessarily) fiercely aggressive, nor are we saying that they are thinking that the world is all about prey and larger predators and their behavior is modeled accordingly. Well, actually, we are saying that! If you observe the way that a scottian personality type will approach a social interaction, it bears a very strong resemblance to how (any) predator would approach such a situation. The average scott, when entering a social situation, will make it a point to interact with everyone in the room. They will present themselves as friendly and outgoing, but with each person they interact with, there is a challenge, a ‘testing’ if you will, wherein they establish who is dominant and who is submissive. This is all within the context of social behavior appropriate to the time and place we are observing the scott. This is essentially a process to establish the ranking of the participants (at this social event), very much as does a wolf or other canine will challenge all the members of a group to determine their place in the group.
There is much to be said about each of these three characteristic worldviews, far too much for this particular forum. There are Pages listed in this blog where more comprehensive and detailed information about the three personality types (or more correctly, their worldviews), is available.

The topic of the next Post will be the distinct manner in which the three personality types express themselves, or to use the currently favored term, how clarks and scotts and rogers manifest their existence.

‘Of kayaks and cattle’… the Wakefield Doctrine (there are three personality types, which one are you?)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine ( this is a lot of fun, trust me, I’m a clark! )

Last Night Saturday Night Drive:

  • Ms. AKH brought up the subject of kayaking
  • DS#1 talked about the deliberate effort to bring (her) rogerian aspect out… increasingly able to set this into motion
  • Molly spoke of ways to get rogers to do what you would want them to do
  • my own (contribution) was to try to present the challenges of knowing what another (personality) type’s reality is ‘really’ like  (lol… reality is really like)

All in all a most enjoyable time for all.

…you should call in next weekend!

Coming this Week

  • proposing a schema for describing reality ‘across’ personality types/worldview
  • ask the Question: why don’t you Write a Comment and/or Call in on Saturday in a variety of amusing ways
  • use the context of writing a Post in order to develop material for the Book Project
  • hopefully an idea for a new Contest
  • don’t be shy…have an idea for a Post or a Project or a Contest…. let us know, dammit!

Hey! Did you know that there are 3 worldviews that everyone lives their lives in? the Wakefield Doctrine says there is, so who are we to disagree?

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (“…the view from outside, how it looks in the distance, the perspective from the inside “)

The Wakefield Doctrine is a perspective on life. Might as well say ‘Life’, because we are not limiting ourselves to the biological ‘age and run down and finally die‘, nor are we remaining on the sociological level in terms of  ‘the people in our lives and the people who influence our lives and the people who limit our lives‘, and we are so not  ‘staying in the here and now…live until you die…eat+drink+reproduce+sleep life of the predator‘.
The Wakefield Doctrine‘s Life that it is talking about is:

  • this screen you are looking at to read these words
  • the money you spent to buy the device that you are looking at
  • the job or the parents or the free-at-a-cost source of money that allowed you to buy the device
  • the reason you enjoy this blog or the reason you need to be distracted, if only for a moment
  • the hope that you can learn, the fear that you might miss out on or the confidence that you are in the right place
  • all of these things, the people (and the way that we feel about them) the places (where we are and we hope to be and regret getting to) and things (that may help us or hurt us or change things forever in our lives)
In short, the Life that we talk about here at the Wakefield Doctrine is the Life that happens to you. We sometimes call this (your) worldview other times we might say, ‘your personal reality‘, we always mean the world that you wake up to and life and work and hate and love and fear.
We say that the Doctrine is a ‘perspective’ because we are offering a different view of the same thing that we all possess. We all may live on the planet Earth (even the clarks1) and we all can read the newspapers that tell us what is happening in the world at large.
The Wakefield Doctrine does not care about the world at large. We care about the world at small. The world that you and I and us experience today seems to match up/resemble/have the characteristics of the three worldviews of the Wakefield Doctrine:
  1. the world of the Outsider (clarks)
  2. the world of the predator (scotts)
  3. the world of the herd member (rogers)
Simple in outline. Foolproof within it’s own definition. Very difficult for most people to imagine.
Try it. What ‘cha got to lose?
Call us, even!2

*a joke for you clarks, who, btw make up the current majority of Readers…what a frickin surprise

** there is a phone number and access code around here somewhere…if you want to call bad enough, you can find it.

Creative Apathy the Wakefield Doctrine ‘Tips for non-Comment-writing clarks’

Wakefield Doctrine ( yes, you are right, it does not matter what emotional goloss I would try to stimulate upon your arrival, you’re here …so what?)

I was reading FOTD Mel’s most recent Post over at Mostly Teachable and, as usual, Mel was succinct and direct and made what I thought was a positive recommendation for a book he has been reading. At the same time, (while I was reading Mel’s Post), I was playing solitaire on the computer*. At some point in the mili-second between processing a sentence of the Post and moving the black Queen to the red King the thought came to me, “Ya gotta care more”… this was followed nearly simultaneously with the reactionaryistic thought… “no, you need to stop caring! You always screw up when you care too much”.

Show of hands. Any of you Readers (and we  clearly are addressing our clark contingency among you Readers) identify with that?

…I will set this Post out amongst you now.  you scotts can sniff at it… rogers can look around and see if anyone is reading it  and clarks….  you know what I mean by this statement, but I will wait until you write something… I can wait forever  seeing how this is the digital virtual world, I can hit delete any damn time I want and we will all choose, according to our nature to:

  • wonder in the back of our minds if the topic will come back (clarks)
  • what topic  (scotts)
  • couldn’t have been important, no one did anything (rogers)

you can sit on mountain tops fasting for weeks and having the neighborhood kids come and throw stones and arrange for an enlightened zen master to sneak up on you while you are in the bathroom and shout a question like, “what is 5 pounds flax??’ and you will not get anywhere near the level of understanding of the personal nature of reality that playing solitaire can provide.  Want to know what I mean? Then you need to ask.

Whats the deal with the weird photo? when will you clarks learn that there is such a thing as too much weirdness? the Wakefield Doctrine says: help the clarks first, the other two can catch up later

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine ( the personality theory that you can put into use today! )

Hello. Mind if I try out a section of the future Wakefield Doctrine book on you? I have been finding that sitting down and trying to write about the Wakefield Doctrine in the type clear, orderly and logically presented appropriate to a serious book totally locks my brain up.  And that’s funny ’cause once you get the basic premise of the Doctrine down, everywhere you look you see clarks and scotts and rogers doing clarklike and scottian and rogerian things! But the Book Project (fortunately) involves a person who has written real books and her influence is to require that this Doctrine of ours is presented in a fashion that the targeted book-buying audience is going to respond to, and that style is so not these Posts! Not that there is anything wrong with these Posts! We always try to remind new Readers that the Pages on this blog is where the background information is to be found and the Posts are where the ‘conversation’ is taking place.

Well, that’s probably all the delay I can get out of writing a Post (instead of getting new Content for the book down ‘on paper’).  …but since you are reading this, there are a number of things we know pretty certain:

  • you’re probably a clark
  • you most likely have a blog of your own (or are just about ready to start one)
  • if you get past a certain point in learning this Wakefield Doctrine it will have an effect on your reality
  • chances are you have a system (of explaining the world to yourself) and depending on you, this is blog is helpful or it is a threat and a waste of your time

Enough about clarks! All of us here know you are out there and are reading/scanning/skimming/’damn! back at the weird Doctrine place again! One of the reasons we are going to the all this effort to write this blog and all is that the Doctrine can be useful to you. Today. In your own life. Without being too weird about it.  (well, maybe a little weird)

….a word about being weird. This is directed to the predominately clarklike readership.

clarks ?  we know you are creative… we know the things that you do are not just to make the other people think twice (well, maybe a little) …we know that you are not being different only because you want people to know that you are here…  we know that the things you wear and the things you do are the ‘normal, totally appropriate, no-other-response-would-make-sense behavior for anyone existing in the kind of world that you find yourself in… and we know that you are looking for an answer.  …and no, we are not saying that the Wakefield Doctrine is ‘The Answer’ … (if you are a clark and you have reached a certain level of understanding of yourself, you know that there never will be an Answer… sorry, just the way it is for you clarks.  …you know there should be an Answer  you can see no other alternative than to keep searching and looking for the facts, the information, the thing you somehow missed that will let you be …whatever/however you describe it… real? not different? a part of… doesn’t matter… what does is that this Doctrine has something that you will find useful in your search, it might make a good add-on for your own system, it might serve as a basis for forming a system of your own (hell, you have enough odd parts and notions to create 3 or 4 systems of understanding)…  but one thing about the Wakefield Doctrine   here you are not the Outsider.

Music?  Why not!

lol thats why not!
