Video Friday Time Travel Episode (but, of course, you already knew that) learn and earn with the Wakefield Doctrine

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers )

This week’s video will, at first blush, seem to hold the greatest appeal for the clarks among Readers. After all, the title implies that we are screwing with ‘the un-screwable’, i.e. the passage of Time. Of course, as we all know, clarks  love the notion of time travel.  However, upon further reflection, I think that perhaps there is something in  (today’s Post) that will attract our rogerian Readers.

“…nah, those frickin people absolutely refuse to go near anything that clarks appear to be endorsing. It’s like they (the rogers) have a 5th sense of something, a way of detecting the scent of blue monkey! And while rogers will knock each other over in the rush to offer themselves to the appetite(s) of the nearest scott, they will go out of their way to reject anything that appears too….outre’…avante cla’rk…you know, weird but cool shit. Screw ’em.”

Today’s Video is a clear illustration why the Wakefield Doctrine will not  be found on any college psych syllabi any time soon. The world has ample supply of meticulously documented, verifiably efficacious, solidly endorsed theories of personality.

But what we are doing here at the Wakefield Doctrine is having fun. And not just having fun here on the computer at home, but  having fun out  in public, in the blogosphere. By most recent estimates there are 900 million people coming online every day, obviously with the burden of too much free time on their hands.  While occasionally puerile and sophomoric, we  have one thing that none of the mainstream personality blogs  have…we have the Wakefield Doctrine!  Which mean that we have a thing that is fun, useful…unique and (here is where rogers should pay attention) the central idea as the basis to form a new herd.

The Wakefield Doctrine contains enough ‘truth’ about the human condition and the ways that (our) personalities become organised and shape our lives to be on any college bookstore shelf. But the single reason that it will not be found there is simply that ‘the Wakefield Doctrine is for you and not for them’.
What we have  is a unique and useful tool for you to use on yourself, but it will never be the kind of  personality theory that prompts  you to say, ‘Hey, you really need to learn this, then you won’t be such an asshole’

Plain to See, Simple to Understand, Easy to Apply…the Wakefield Doctrine

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers )

Listen, before we go any further…I need one of you Readers to do me a favor. Thursday is here already and I got nothing for Video Friday!  Some questions (written as Comments or just email me here) would really help me out here, any topic any format…you ask the question and I will answer it live on the video to be played on (this) Friday’s Video Post.  There are almost no questions that are not answerable, so write us with your queries. For a format, I will read the question ( and I will identify the questioner by the name on the Comment or email, so if you want to remain anonymous, leave your name out. Pretty simple, isn’t it?)
                         hey,  thanks (in advance)!

Speaking of improvements…did you notice the 3 new Sections on the Main Page?  Below this Post, in the center on the ‘landing page’ you will see new sections: What (is the Wakefield Doctrine), How (do I use it) and Why (is there a Wakefield Doctrine). Even though we do have an ‘About’ page on the Doctrine, lately we are getting more ‘requests’ from Readers to make the Wakefield Doctrine blog more…’Reader-friendly’  …more direct and instructionational,  even though all the information is there…well, you know how rogers can be!  In any event, there are 3 sections that will have concise, direct and useful information on the Doctrine and how to get the most from your visit to our little blog.  Speaking of growing in popularity, if you have any suggestions as to the information, FAQ, instructions that we should include in these new sections, give us a shout! Will be happy to accommodate*

Hey! New Readers!!   Here’s how it goes with the Wakefield Doctrine site:  those new sections? … they will answer your immediate questions.  The Posts? …the Posts should be thought of as a continuing conversation about the Doctrine, the blog and things in general.  Now, a clark would ‘get’ the Doctrine  just from reading the Posts…a scott could, but is too impatient and doesn’t really care all that much about ‘getting the details’ and a roger?  wellll they would most likely object to the whole layout of the blog,  simply because it is not tidy enough and they do not see a line gathering at the door.

Speaking of doors and lines and  rogers!!  We all know how they love restaurants, but if you need to find a bunch of rogers in a total hurry, drive around your area on a Sunday morning and look for the (physically) smallest restaurant with the longest line extending out the door.  There be your rogers!  Serially, I have witnessed little diners, that clearly have a capacity of 16 food-eaters and there is a line 30 people long. What the hell!  And you know they are rogers, cause (of the people standing in line) they are very small groups, mostly couples with an occasional 3rd person** and they are keeping to themselves while standing in line. ( Actually they are surreptitiously judging the dress and demeanor of their fellow rogers).  Of course, you would know if there were a scott among them by the surreptitious stares of the male rogers and the fawning expressions of the female rogers.

So let us know you are out there. If you have information that will be helpful to include in our new sections, write a Comment and we will convert it to content (even give you credit for the info/insight!).

Hey!! don’t forget the Questions for tomorrow’s Video Friday!  Come on…the clock is ticking.

* after all, I am a clark  (ha ha)
** a spare clark, of course!!

Now for the fun part!

OK, you got the part about clarks, scotts and rogers. You are comfortable with the primary characteristics of each of the three. What are you waiting for?  Get on out there!!

Here is the best way, today when you are in a public place, look around…do you see any overly-animated people? Running/walking fast/vibrating in place? scotts
See that clique, that group of people that appear real friendly….see how they laugh after one of their group leaves?…roger
clarks?  damn, around here somewhere…usually won’t be obvious

A Basic Guide to the Wakefield Doctrine ( the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers )

The Wakefield Doctrine, also known as the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers  is a unique, useful and fun way to approach understanding (the) human personality.

There is more, much more!

Our goal in this little Primer is to give you the basic elements of the Wakefield Doctrine!

The Wakefield Doctrine holds that all people are born with the potential to experience the world in (one) of three characteristic ways, and that at an early age we settle into one of these ways of seeing the world. At this point we are said to become clarks or scotts or rogers. While our experience in life is predominately one of these three worldviews, we never lose the capacity to see the world as the other two types.

This blog has a table of contents, or tabs or some damn thing that will take you to Pages that are devoted to descriptions of the three personality types of the Wakefield Doctrine.

What separates the Doctrine from most other personality typing systems is that rather than trying to assign a ‘label’ or a category or a type to a person based on a list of traits or behaviors or other arbitrary qualities, the Wakefield Doctrine maintains that only by understanding the nature of the world as the other person is experiencing it can you possibly assign a type or label.

‘why is a raven like a writing desk’? (and) what is the Wakefield Doctrine’s take on those other personality theories?

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine ( the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers )

A frequently asked  question: ” What does the Wakefield Doctrine call this personality type? ( Always  one of some other personality theory’s type), i.e.  the Driver Type ( from the Merrill-Reid schema) or the ‘Type 2 ( of the 9 Enneagram Types ) or even the famous Axis 4 (from the rogerian geek school of personality typology). Sometimes answering this question is fun, other times it is frustrating but the outcome of this exchange is always less than is hoped for by the person posing the question.

Comparisons between mainstream personality types systems and the Wakefield Doctrine  hardly ever yields an answer that is satisfactory to the interlocutor or the listener. While the underlying motivation for these questions  is often well-meaning,  the goal behind asking them is misguided. (  “well, don’t you see?  The Wakefield Doctrine and (  well-known personality theory) are both talking about the same thing, so the Doctrine is not so unusual or odd or weird! Maybe if you describe clarks and scotts and rogers using some of the same  language, you will attract more people to the blog!”
At this point the answer (from the Wakefield Doctrine is always the same: No.   (…for 2 reasons):

  1. The Wakefield Doctrine is not scientifically based on empirical data nor does it rely on test subjects providing statistically significant  and consistent reporting of identification with certain traits or behavior(s). The Wakefield Doctrine does not  approach the ‘classification of personality’  on the basis of traits and quirks, phobias and foibles gathered from a test subject. ‘Personality Typing by Chart’,  in which  check-marks are totalled/summed up and added up, with a score at the bottom of a column labeld:  ‘Your Personality Type!  A lot  like  a dinner party at a restaurant,  the host glances down to the bottom of the bill that the Waiter has brought to the table. Scanning the menu items and tallying the cost, the guests will hear:    “OK!  who had the FEAR OF HEIGHTS with the DISDAIN FOR AUTHORITY Combo?  no, scott!! I am sure you ordered the MECURIAL TEMPERMENT COMBINED WITH AN INGRAINED RESISTANCE TO LEARNING BY EXAMPLE! OK folks, the total  is: (2) Drivers with homophobic tendencies masked by an excessive interest in contact sports and (1) Passive-aggressive nurturing-type with  un-resolved oedipal conflict compensated by a need to demonstrate language skills un-supported by actual ability! Alright everyone!!  Ante up!”
  2.  the Wakefield Doctrine is for you, not for them!
For most of us, the attraction to ‘personality types’ and ‘personal profiles and assessment’ is founded in a genuine curiosity about ourselves and a sincere desire to help other people in our lives handle  their own problems and shortcomings better. Unfortunately, the focus all too often comes to rest on ‘the other person’.   We all know this person,  a caring friend/relative/co-worker who goes to great lengths to find answers so that they can ‘help you’!  With a magazine article in hand (or a book, or a CD or  DVD) that promises to describe personality types and how to identify them…whats the second thing you/they do after learning these well-researched, empirically based systems of understand the human psyche?  The second thing (and sometimes the first) is to say, “Hey! You know who is a real Driver personality? This personality system totally  got his/her number!! This is really helpful, I can’t wait to tell them how much I understand their personality!”
…this is where the Wakefield Doctrine and all the better researched, better marketed, widely-accepted personality theories part ways.  No matter what you think you can do with the understanding that this Doctrine can help you get, it is for you,  it is not for the other person.

Are we saying that the Wakefield Doctrine ( the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers ) is neither scientifically valid nor  an effective method for helping other people to solve their intractable mental and emotional problems?
Yes, yes we are saying that.

So why bother with this thing of ours? Well, for starters:

  • you will have an advantage over the people you meet in the course of your day today
  • the behavior of the people in your life will make more sense to you (because of your understanding of the Wakefield Doctrine)
  • you will be able to anticipate the actions and (re)actions of people to virtually any situation
  • you will see your own life, habits, behaviors in a different light
  • you will have fun with your friends spotting the clarks and the scotts and the rogers as you go about your day today

Sound like reason enough to figure out this blogsite?

I promised Molly, a short and concise definition of the Wakefield Doctrine:

…three personality types predicated on (three) characteristic ways to perceive the world at large.  All people are born with the potential to see the world as any of the three (types) that we call: clarks, scotts and rogers. (Further) the Doctrine maintains that at an early age we become predominately one (of the three) but we never lose the capacity to experience the world as do the other two. The personality types of the Wakefield Doctrine are gender and culture neutral and is predicated that the personality type is derived from understanding the reality in which a person lives, not by trying to identify specific traits, interests, drives or ideation. The Wakefield Doctrine is a tool meant to aid a person who would try to see the world as the other person does.

Works pretty damn well, too!
