Twisted Mistake Number 18, time is not standing still, we’re all getting older, the Wakefield Doctrine ( it’s a shiny, shiny future!)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Twisted MixTape 18

Jen Kehl

Jen and Kristi… by now, they both have established homes and families, (however) neither are totally, 100% quite settled down, though both are devoted to the kids and patient with the spouses.  On simultaneous spur-of-the-moment side-trips coming home from the supermarket, they run into each other at the local Y, signing up for a yoga class, (“come on, Jen… you need to stay flexible, you never know when you might find yourself needing to stage dive”  Kristi laughs).  Caught up in the ‘hey-we’re-adults-and-have-the-resources-but-what-good-is-that-if-ya-can’t-be-crazy-every-now-and-then spirit that was the first decade of the 21st Century, they decide, as an alternative to joining the book club, right this instant, that it would be fun to send an X-Rated Candy-gram  inviting me to the Renaissance-jazz/folk and art/adult film Festival taking place in this small town that seems to be manifesting on weekends of late, in the context of a bloghop, the TTofT. Odd.

Although I would love to write something that offers an insight, a unique perspective on the music of the first decade of the new Millennium, I will leave that task to the more capable and skilled writers among us. Having said that, given that the assignment before us is to devise, create and otherwise present a mix tape, a sampling of a decade of music, if you will, that would let a total stranger acquire a sense of the music of the time.

My list today has nothing that might provide (or even hint at) a relationship among the individual songs. Perhaps it would help to say that, in the first decade of the 21st Century, I consciously set out to acquire a taste for all music (except yodeling).  This included country music (which was hellbent on merging with rock music and as such was pretty easy to like) and pop music/Top 40, which, lacking a teenage worldview, was a bit of a challenge… everything in between. I would say, if my suggested listening below is any indication, I have been successful. I thoroughly enjoy each of the selections below.

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Considerer says:

    Back to Lyle, back to Lyle!!!

    Actually, the White Stripes aren’t half bad.

    So no yodelling, yet you’re fine with Tuvan throat singing? Odd.

    Which does our ‘town’ have, then? A concert hall? A disco? A stadium? A field?

    I’d prefer the field – sun-baked grass, a stage, big speakers and stands where we can wander, buy sodas and candyfloss, peruse second hand CDs and records, find old posters of the legends – chillax. And in the evening, on a picnic blanket, with a cider and a smile, listen to something acoustic and lovely (and probably not from the naughties…)

      @Considerer

      I would like a concert hall (could be an old converted 1930’s movie theatre, I’ll to find a picture, put in tomorrow’s Post). Yeah Lyle, nothing bad in his repertoire. Throat singing, yeah listened to those guys.

      Here’s one that I bet you haven’t tried yet…goes back to the day, courtesy of the progenitor roger. Recordings of Native Americans ‘Grass Dances’… very catchy in the sense of sitting around and playing a board game. will try and find that too.

      yeah… I am such a clark lol

  2. @ Clark – and don’t forget the ponca ? (help me Roger) war dances! and I’ll bring my Kochiti (sp?) drum for later in the evening =D

  3. Slu says:

    Dude… Love Seven Nation Army, Brad P can surely play that guitar, etc.

    But, hands down, for me, without seeing any other list: Your first clip, Black Dog… Clip of the Week!!! That was as enjoyable as it will ever get. Loved it!!! (have to add that to my Pandora)

    So enjoyed, Slu

  4. Love Katy!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Michelle

      she was my first ‘sucess’ at enjoying pop music (my project to acquire a taste for nearly everything, lol) mostly because of the sense of humor that seems to be underneath her work

  5. Linda Roy says:

    omg – how did i not include plant and krauss on my list?? major oversight and they’re going up next week. i saw them at the theater at madison square garden and they did black dog. it was AMAZING! i love that album so much. i wish they would do another.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Linda

      major concert envy now. the chemistry that seems to come out of the vid…I trust it was there in the live venue. What a great pairing.

  6. troy P. says:

    Well, “Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes” appears to be the clear winner this week! Though I did enjoy The Darkness (the amount of light they *should* have used when filming the accompanying video by the way) as well.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Troy

      yeah, Jack White just seems to be one of those musicians that have so much talent, that they will create it no matter what…

  7. Dana says:

    What a diverse list – all that’s missing is some yodeling :) Maybe next week?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Dana

      lol (god! I know that there is a place in the human mind where the gargling-in-color sound of non-verbal music-shouting is appreciated… but I don’t want to know!)

  8. Seven Nation Army is showing up in multiple posts! Yay! I played that track over and over when that album came out. So freaking good.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Q S Melissa

      yeah, too freaking good. I actually avoid the song*, unless I have something catchier on hand, for when the bass line takes over my neurology, ya know?

      * love it though… from my every pore

  9. Holy Shit!

    2 song overlaps/dupes (given the small number on the list each person submits). It’s like you were standing behind me at my computers ( “No, wait! The songs not over! Go back, go back!”)

    (“Clarkette Rogeina? Who are you talking to in there? It’s 1:02 PM. Get back to work!”)

  10. Dude, I love that whole album by Robert Plant / Alison Krause. In fact, I’m regretting not putting it on my list. Speaking of (sortof) country, my hubs is a fan. I never have been but recently have realized that there’s some damn fine country music out there too. I have no clue what years each of the songs I like were made and never think of them when looking at TMTT, but appreciate the reminder, Clark!
    Love that Katy Perry made your features and am totally cracking up at your very funny intro about Jen and I bumping into each other, doing yoga and that somehow leading to us sending you an x-rated candy-gram. ha! Awesome.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kristi

      well, of course, you would have (sent x-rated candy-gram) what else could you have? There is sure a certain… logical necessity that was undeniable…sort of… lol
      country music is a term that I suspect most afficienados will object to…too broad and general, but the people who get airplay on the local country station, sound increasingly like they could be on the bill with many of the middle of the road/mainstream rock groups (whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean…lol)
      as always I enjoyed your Post.

  11. Jen says:

    You know what? So far this is the closest to a list I would have made. I may have picked a different Katy Perry, but other than that. You go on with your shiny old self!

  12. Slu says:

    My Man… Just an FYI (and I hope you don’t mind): I told you how much I really liked that tune Black Dog from your selections. I like it so much that I am using it tomorrow for my Friday Blog that I always post one tune on. Giving you some cred for it by using your link to WD. Hope that’s cool.

    Have a great night, Slu

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Slu

      totally cool with that, thanks!

      hey speaking of the Doctrine we’re looking to do one (or more) this weekend. If you’re back from vacay… it would be great if you got a chance to stop in (working on the time… looks like a 9am EDT and/or a 1pm EDT Sunday)… otherwise, stop by Considerers TToT bloghop…it runs the whole weekend and it mutating into something very cool… a lot of people, ideas and fun
