‘the Songs of the 90’s…the decade of clarks’ the Wakefield Doctrine (the songs tell the tale)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Twisted MixTape Tuesday 16

The Nineteen Nineties… what a great Decade. Seriously. I don’t have the formal understanding of the musicological developmentation but, for me the 1990s were a (return) to a less overblown, less gigantic approach to music. Not that there is anything wrong with gigantic and bombastic and such. That’s why god invented arenas!  But for me, somehow, the new music seemed like it was more at home coming out of speakers in my car (not 18″ liquid nitrogen cooled woofers, either)…rather there was a (for me) a sense of returning to a more human scale. Axel and Vince still had a place in my playlist… but that’s another thing. Playlists. Computers began to replace my record store (and with Napster, my free record store.) Variety was rampant. I listened to music I had never heard before and I listened to music that I didn’t like enough to spend 10 bucks for a CD.

…I liked the 90’s  It had a more personal feel, while at the same time expressing alienation from an increasingly structured and impersonal world.  (And! Country music started to come out of the corral)

(          clever little  sub-plot involving Jen and Kristi  temporarily down for editing, modifications and such… please check back when I have gotten an idea that is as amusing as the previous one was, that should be in…oh I don’t know 3 or 4  years!!! )  (thank you for your patience….)

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

Comments

  1. I was going to comment on Offspring, because yes I loved that group back int he day, but then you included The Divinyls and yes I loved that song. So corny, but just such a great beat!! Thanks Clark for the awesome walk down memory lane today!! :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Janine (over at J9)

      Thank you for ‘the cover’ on the Divinyls! lol How weird is it about music? It is not that I was a follower of the group (or even listened to the stations that played this song, at least at the time) but it got stuck in my head at work one day, and now here, 20 plus years later! There is some interesting effects showing now, demographically-speaking with the song lists, fun!

  2. Dream says:

    Wonderful list that brings back so many memories. I was a big Offspring fan at the time and every time I hear that En Vogue song, I think of Woody Harrelson dancing to it in The Cowboy Way. I’m so glad you included that Jason Mraz since I didn’t know he’d done a version of that song and now it has a place on my playlist.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Dream

      yeah, that (Rocket Man) is, for me a perfect example of how (somehow) an artist can take a good sound and make it better, without trying to re-write it but still presenting it in a way that makes you say, ‘damn, what a perfect cover for that song’

  3. I have always loved en vogue! Thanks for the memories, Clark!

  4. Slu says:

    My Man… Very nice: Love the ‘Free Your Mind’ selection. As well, The Divinyls. The Jason Mraz tune is so sweet & tender. And then… Alan Jackson. Not a big Country guy, but I live in Texas. I’m married to a Country Music lover. It’s on my Pandora, mostly for her when we’re in the car together. I’ve been to several Alan Jackson concerts at the Houston Rodeo. Really do like his stuff. I appreciate that you included Country. I came real close this week and might still next week.

    Nice List, Slu

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @ Slu

      hey, thanks

      ya know, I’ve been fond of saying, in the last few year… the best new rock music can be found on the country stations. lol (I imagine the old school Gretsch, fiddle and pedal-steel guys are screaming about the Marshalls being wheeled into the studio.) I love pedal-steel guitars

      I think I said it to ‘Dream’ but that Jason tune is such a great example of what a cover song should be… different and somehow better.

  5. troy P. says:

    Ah Napster – Power To The People! Whoops! Nope, right back to the Korporations… =)

    And good call on the Divinyls – one of the more interesting songs of the modern era…

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Troy

      the insidiousness of music! I was saying to someone today (about the Divinyls) that at the time it was popular I didn’t listen to the ‘popular music’ stations that would play it, but it caught me at a (temp) job I was working at…it wasn’t and I heard the song twice and here we are 20 plus years later with 10 years of music and that pops into my head. (good tune, tho) lol

  6. WAIT. WHAT? I want the old sub-plot back! Please? I am just now getting around to read my lovies as I had work and a sick kid today* so I missed whatever trashtalk was going on about me and Jen. And I love trash talk especially when it is about me.**
    Seeing the word Boombastic reminded me of that song Shaggy Boombastic (no clue what era).
    Dude. I love the version of Rocket Man by Jason Mraz. I have NEVER heard it before and am going right now to download it from iTunes. So thanks for teaching me something else today.

    *I am so not above using the sympathy card to make you feel like you HAVE to tell me
    **When it’s flattering

  7. Actually I don’t see Rocket Man by him on iTunes. Sigh.

  8. Um hello. I’ve now refreshed three times waiting for the story about ME. Because you know. Me.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      ok but I will email it… just in case you don’t laugh and or scream or otherwise indicate that I have played out the schtick, I will send to the email I see here, which is right under your Social Security number of…..

      lol

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kristi

      is i your email… (I trust future biographers and/or authors researching the early days of the Doctrine will reflect on the unholy influence and result pressure (psycho-sexual, of course) that the creator of the Doctrine was required to bear under. and such.

  9. Jen says:

    Man…this list is pretty frickin awesome. I really am impressed with the cross genre representation here. Love Free Your Mind, Alan Jackson… all of it. It’s amazing to me how different everyone’s lists are. Some of us were under a rock on purpose (me) some were out partying, some were clubbing and some were really paying attention to some real stuff. Done with the pithiness. Great great list. Great.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jen

      you are deserving of all the credit… riding herd on a bunch of song-humming blog-writing mutants, I consider myself in good company, but I will say, bravo to you (and) your totally alluring co-bloghop hellion…Kristi

      bravo, yo

      tell me this is a 2 part decade… I have the left side of the brain to answer to too, you know!

  10. Considerer says:

    I saw a hilarious Youtube vid of ‘free your mind’ done by drag queens at Mickeys of Hollywood.

    *lip stuck out* I prefer Bowie. Because Bowie was the King of the Fairies and was enigmatic and sexy as hell in Labyrinth (or whatever it is when you’re still a pre-teen).

    And Clark, we’re all missing out now – stop being such a triple-second-guesser ;)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Considerer

      lol (if I answer will that put me in the category of quadruple, triple,second-guesser) or…would that (by virtue of the rules of reality known intuitively by clarks alone), simply allow me to make a statement that all who hear it will choice to forget is an answer, instead of a statement?

      this newest generation of clarks… I really like you guys

  11. It’s totally Clark of me that I like the fact you called me a Hellion, right? You’re not the first, but you’re the first in a longass time. And where is my email already?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kristi

      totally… (and whats really cool about the Doctrine is…) that the good feeling gets referenced to everyone current in your life, in a totally positive way, albeit a completely private thing…

      I sent it to the email that you have with the comment… should be there now, as I sent it about 30 minutes ago… let me know if not there, can resend ( oh! I sent it from one of my (many) gmail accounts… maybe it got spamified cause of the link I have in it…

  12. Regarding the iTunes version – I was hoping to add it to my playlist for car rides. I’ve bookmarked the Youtube version (thank you) but want it ON DEMAND. You know? It’s really great.

  13. EN VOGUE…wow those ladies could belt out a tune! There is quite a mixture of music going on here and it is most excellent! Great list!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @MM

      thank you, that was the thing in the 90’s (for me at least) the very wide range of music to was listenable.

  14. Jennifer says:

    “…..and I wonder why she sleeps with my friends.”

    And, I was rocking with Alan Jackson in those days too. I have his greatest hits cd.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jennifer

      “…may be dumb, but I’m not a dweeb”

      Hey for the less-than-ancient-Readers, that ‘heart broke hillbilly’ is ‘Otis’ from the (very) old Andy Griffith show… (this info is available in the google, hate to admit that I simply recognized him…lol)

  15. You keep producing such great lists. You must be cheating.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Tracy

      lol oh! yeah??! am not…!!

      hey… I think I have one opening on the Wakefield Doctrine blogroll… assuming that you have an Official Wakefield Doctrine docTee, what’s to keep me from putting your blog on that there blogroll there?

  16. Woah, I haven’t thought about Napster in YEARS! Not since they shut it down :( I used to get all my music off there as well. Greedy greedy artists. Lol…just kidding. I know, they have to make their millions somehow, right? :P Thanks for bringing back those memories. I still enjoy listening to Green Day, Ace of Base, Backstreet Boys, Roxette, and the likes. I think I’d be happy to live in the 90’s forever…it was the best!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melanie

      Thanks to Napster, I listened to an incredible variety of music, it was pretty amazing. The 90’s were definitely not a bad decade!

  17. Jak says:

    Great list! This was the decade I began going to concerts and partying. Also, Napster was amazing :) Access to so much at your fingertips (though, really we still do, don’t we?)

    Alan Jackson (and tech that specific version of “Rocket Man”) was the only artist I was unfamiliar with, and once watching the video I quickly understood why lol Country was never much my thing. Though, last weekend at a birthday party there was discussion about how much Country music has changed from its original style/sound/etc. I found it interesting.

    I love Green Day’s “Brain Stew” and was kind of a theme song for me. Still should be >.<

    Jak

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jak

      …the thing about ‘country music’ today, is that it has converged with rock/pop in production values, if nothing else. Hell, there’s a country rap hybrid that is actually is listenable example:

      ain’t NWA but the old school country guys must have gone nuts (loved the line, ‘swerving like I’m George Jones’)
