humor | the Wakefield Doctrine - Part 6 humor | the Wakefield Doctrine - Part 6

lost my shirt in a card game, at which I did not have a chance

Hey, it is Sunday and nothing in the Doctrine says these Posts have to be fun and funny and cute and amusing every time does it? So the sooner we get our learnin’ out of the way, the sooner we can get to the videos and the Polls and the references to imaginary high school exchange students (Imaginario? ¿Qué significa este “imaginario”, Miguel?  ). Everyone ok with that?  Fine. Let’s begin.

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers) which as new Readers will want to know is, a unique and productive and fun way to look at the people in our lives and the way that they act. Not a ‘theory of personality’ in the sense of  listing traits and behaviors, the Doctrine is more a perspective, a deliberate and voluntary effort to see the world as the other person experiences it. The Wakefield Doctrine is built upon the notion that we are all born with the capacity to experience the world in three characteristic ways, which we call clarks, scotts and rogers. We say that we all have the capacity to live in the world as a clark, scott and roger and at some point early in life we become mostly one of these three. We always have the other two traits, but it is mostly, clark, scott or roger. Gender and culture have no bearing on this way of looking at the way people act. Once you know if a person is a clark or a scott or a roger, you will see that they will react and respond in predictable ways in any situation.

Pretty simple, isn’t it?

Since today is Sunday, last night probably was Saturday night. ( ¿Cómo en el nombre de mi Señora del bazo, ¿puede pedir que? Al igual que hay otra respuesta? Aiiee! ) Of course, it was…Saturday night, that is. And if it was Saturday then it must have been time to drive through Wakefield. (For new Readers, the Wakefield in the Wakefield Doctrine is a very real place and due to it’s location in the more temperate regions of North America, drives are possible throughout the year. And it is on these drives that a particular forum is held to discuss theory and application of the Doctrine. Attended by yours truly and DownSpring glenn it is often the scene of a spirited, occasionally  one-sided debate,  but never a dull exchange of ideas. If you have ever served Jury Duty, the judge will often explain that the jury system is predicated on a contest of facts, which by this contest, the truth will emerge*. The drives through Wakefield are like this, except louder, with more creative use of language and the truth does not always emerge. But it is fun. And this blog is the direct product of such a drive.)

Last night the topic was, as it often is, ‘What is the Point of this Wakefield Doctrine thing?’

(Damn this is boorinng!!) Hey someone out there? For the love of Jethro, somebody write something! Anything! This Wakefield Doctrine really is a total hoot, it is fun and amazing, you and your friend will laugh and laugh. And you will have Hope that things will get better in your Life. All this is true. Hell, all this is guaranteed.
Trouble is, for a host of reasons, nearly all  of these Posts are written by a clark. And if you have learned nothing else about the Doctrine, you surely know that clarks are: creative, crazy, intuitive and pedantic, inventive and persuasive (in person) , but clarks are not, I repeat, not good at communicating to the Masses. In no way derogatory, but clarks simply do not translate well to a general audience. One on one, totally. Read it in The WatchTower? no fuckin way.
rogers are the one who can communicate to the Masses. Read Progenitor rogers blog, Precession Recession or go to Friend of the Doctrine Mel’s blog, Spatula in the Wilderness. You will read words that are easy on the eyes and brains, or as glenn put it last Wakefield, ‘so easy going, it reads itself to you’. That is what rogers are so very good at. But a roger would have no need to create the Wakefield Doctrine, so what good is it to wish to be rogerian?
scotts, scotts!….frickin scotts…no, they will not write better, more accessible words. But if you find one who knows about the Doctrine, they will present it in a way that you will not ignore! scotts will take whatever piece of this Doctrine they happen to like and make it fun!! exciting!! interesting…and for the small, small price of a piece of your soul, they will let you enjoy the Wakefield Doctrine too. But you will not have the Doctrine in any form that is anything more than amusing. If you get it from a scott, it will not be a tool, it will be a toy….a fun toy, an exciting toy  (…very fun, Miss Sullivan!! )  but a toy none the less.

So, why bother?

‘Cause…you are obviously curious (if you are still reading this thing), you must be intelligent ( to have waded through this stuff ) and most importantly of all…and in fact, the conclusion arrived at by the end of last night’s drive through Wakefield…you, dear Reader, must already have a certain flexibility of intelligence, i.e. you are able to imagine what is not. The only way you are still reading this is that you have that quality of intelligence that enables you to live with the idea,  “ok, I know what is real, but I betcha that stuff those Doctrine people are talkin about is just as real, but different…still real…what else does their theory of clarks, scotts and rogers do?”

…Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine.

OK, you have gotten this far…you done good…and no, we are not all work here at the Doctrine, even on Sundays. Mr. B? Some music if you will…

What?  yes, yes glenn did behave himself and while he still has a way, ways to go, let’s give him a little treat….( hey downspring glenn, this is why using the Doctrine to evolve is a good thing….)

( * The cornerstone of the legal system in the United States is the jury trial. Many of the opinions of the U.S. Supreme Court, which set forth the law of the land, are based on the issues and disputes raised in jury trials. The jury trial method of resolving disputes is premised on the belief that justice is best achieved by pitting the parties against each other as adversaries, with each party advocating it’s own version of the truth. Under the adversary system, the jury, a group of citizens from the community, decides which facts in dispute are true. ) (…is this the feet notes that we must study? Mother of the Virgin, how can we learn so much?)

today Washington DC, tomorrow the World!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers). Let’s just say that what we have here at this blog is a little game played by 6.552610522259909e-7 % of the people in the world today!*
Pretty damn impressive, no?  ( psst! hey, Exchange Students from the autonomous region of Madrid!…the answer he is looking for is…si!! ) Now I know some people might say, ‘you know, it is still a pretty small percentage there, Doctrinaires!’ To these people we say:  ‘be scottian, insist on remaining rogerian or stay whatever-the-hell it is you are, clark‘!

DownSpring Joanne in Washington DC plus hat

Today’s Post is not about stats. At least not directly. Today’s Post is about one of our own, taking steps, doing things, pushing boundaries and wearing a hat (on her damn head) right into the heart of this here nation’s Capitol, here. DownSpring Joanne has taken the Wakefield Doctrine to the District of frickin Columbia!  Let’s hear it for Joanne!! jeez goddamn! excellent work, yo. Look on that photo!!

Seriously, we do want to thank the Mistress of Questionnaires for bravely taking the Doctrine to a place that can totally use the benefits of understanding the nature of clarks, scotts and rogers. Not for nuthin, but I choose to believe that as Joanne walked around the Capital of the US of A, surely she would have passed by a famous, powerful politician (or even better, a Lobbyist). And as they passed, that other person, deep in thought about writing laws and and passing bills and such, would have their thought process interrupted,

(…now let’s see….” Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government… yeah and freedom of Doctrines too…I think that would only be right…”)

pardon me Ms, the Congressperson has important business in the rotunda!

You know, it is possible. And the simple undeniable fact is that a whole bunch of people…ok a small number of people…well, the people that Joanne walked past when she had the hat (on her damn head) saw the words: theWakefield Doctrine clarkscottroger …alright,  those who walked close enough to read it!  But the simple reality is that the awareness of the Wakefield Doctrine is moving forward. Susan B Anthony eat your heart out!

It has been a totally satisfying week to begin the school year with! Ms. AKH (our current Speaker for the scotts), total Tasmanian when it comes to finding ways to increase the Readership of the Wakefield Doctrine, has been successful already! New Reader,  ‘CY’  has taken the step of Commentationing. Welcome CY….’cellent work ‘KH **  We look forward to your Reading (lol) (… Mees Hanie? ¿Qué diablos significa eso? de mirar hacia adelante a la lectura … mi Inglés sigue siendo no tan bueno!…)

Still a lot of work to do and  time is not slowing down. So write in your suggestions (for expanding the reach and presence of the Doctrine) we will print any and all suggestions (except those from glenn…our diminutive glenn is still in self-imposed timeout…we know he can self-actualize his own damn self…just needs a little time and a lot of support…so let’s all gather around glenn and have a group relate-to-each-other-in-a-circle-but-no-touchee…’come on glenn…evolve,  binyon, evolve!).

Seeing as we are back in the school year, we should end the Post with a Wakefield Doctrine Lesson of the Day ( aiyee!! Mees Hanie! qué? una prueba? No estoy listo!… )

The topic today is Progress, so I gathered some famous quotes about progress and they are from a clark, a scott and a roger. Seeing as how it is the start of the year and we have new Readers here, we will make this an open book quiz. ( CY?  if you can to contribute to the discussion and manage to do so without totally embarrassing all of us, there could be a hat (for your damn head) in this for you!) (yes, you may consult with AKH…) So, here they are in no-you-can’t-get-this-wrong-I-frickin-already-told-you-the-order-of-the-types:

This world owes all its forward impulses to people ill at ease. (Nathaniel Hawthorne) {way-dead clark}

It takes five years to design a new car in this country. Heck, we won World War II in four years.  (H. Ross Perot) {Still alive scott }

Enthusiastic partisans of the idea of progress are in danger of failing to recognize… the immense riches accumulated by the human race. By underrating the achievements of the past, they devalue all those which still remain to be accomplished. (Claude Levi-Strauss) {yes, a dead roger}

Mr. B get your overall-made-from-a-tuxedo-wearin-ass on over here…we need some music

Well, it is good to see that the Summer vacation has done nothing to temper your clearly odd sense of the appropriate… but seriously let’s get something a bit more…edifying…we do have exchange students!

Hey! I thought you said I would be famous by now and someone else would write these things

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers) which just happens to be a fun, unique and productive way to look at the people in our lives and the way they act. With the Wakefield Doctrine you can not only understand why they do the things they do, you can predict how they will act in any situation, at home, at work, at school and at play!

mother theresa, yo

It  has been a productive week, in a exhilarating and depressing sort of way, here at the Doctrine. Exhilarating because we are beginning to better understand the obstacles that are before us as we continue our efforts to spread the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers across the globe and depressing because we are beginning to better understand the obstacles to spreading the theory of clark, scotts and rogers across the globe.  To wit: so far everyone who ‘gets’ the Wakefield Doctrine learned it directly. They were shown who in their circle of friends was a clark, show was a scott, who was a roger. The obvious advantage of this direct, ‘in person’ being the examples used to demonstrate and illustrate the three types was always correct and true to form. Plus there would be an immediate feedback loop between teacher and pupil.  And probably the most helpful thing of all, the simple fact that the teacher enjoyed the Doctrine and we all know that enthusiasm on the part of the teacher always conveys to a pupil. The damn thing is simply fun.

And therein lies our challenge. How do we convey the fun of the Doctrine? Limited to the present medium of communication, effectively teaching by email, we need to present the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers in such a manner that not only can the Reader  learn the characteristic traits of each of the three… but at the same time…have…….fun.         (yipee)

Well, it is way, way too late to stop now. The Doctrine is out there. We have Readers who come and read this blog and they/you deserve the opportunity to ‘get’ the real fun of understanding the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers. There are approximately 100,000,000 people out in the internet every day, looking for exactly what we, here at the Wakefield Doctrine have to offer. So while we are hard at work making the format (of this blog) more ‘findable’, eventually they will all stop by and read this thing. So lets do the math! there are only 3 Progenitors and 4 DownSprings and if we divide the number of potential Readers equally among us and  if we make it our full time jobs to talk to everyone….that’s still…(carry the 1, divide….) ….(shit this calculator only goes to 10 millions….)… (screw it, add a zero…) …thats 14,285,714 people each!  Hey! that’s not as bad as I thought… let’s see now, we can  go out 5 days a week, see 4.5 people a day (on average, of course!) that means it will take us…90,702 days to reach ‘n teach everyone! (…one last calculation….)  that’s only 248.49 years!

I feel better now. It is do-able. It is just going to take time.  Er,  Readers? any of you happen to be Jehovah Witnesses? We really, really could use the help…seriously.  Some people, (scotts) like to make fun of Witnesseses {to a scott it must look like a group of Fenway Franks walking up the sidewalk to their door} but I actually admire them (…no! a clark liking something that everyone else is laughing at? that can’t be!!)… in all sincerity I give them props for their willingness to go against the stream and do their thing, and you’ve got to admit, they gots mad door-to-door skills.  Anyway, if there are any Jehovah Witnesesses among our Readers, I will not point you out, your secret is safe with us…but maybe you have some ad space in that Watch Tower mag?

So. We will keep up the efforts here. The Wakefield Doctrine can be learned from reading this blog, the Pages and the Posts and everything else. We will be reaching out through as many channels as possible.  Ms AKH seems to be donning the apparel of the Mistress of Publicitousity and she is doing yeoman-ette work in that regard. As a matter of record, she is Commenting about finding a Reader who is actually willing to admit to liking (sort of) this thing of ours!
“Hello (your name goes here) Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine!! Everyone help give me give (your name goes here) a warm Doctrine welcome. Hidy!”

So that gets us started for another day. Just so no one thinks that we do not have totally appreciative Readers, following are a couple of admiring Comments that I found (for some strange reason) in our Spam Folder:

Considerably, the blog post is actually the greatest on this worthy topic. I concur with your decisions and will thirstily look forward to see your approaching updates. Saying thanks will not just be adequate, for the phenomenal lucidity in your writing. I will at once grab your feeds to stay informed of any updates. Delightful work and much success in your business endeavors! Have a nice day

(Did someone say, “Hey Doctrine People, play us some old people rock and we will buy your hats (for our damn heads) and will even write Comments that are real, and thoughtful and we don’t mind if they are so totally off-base that one could only wonder if the writer (of such Comments) was drugged, overly tired or a Jehovah Witness!)

Readers and Visitors? may I introduce the Raison-ettes and a roger

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Have we got some Progenitors and DownSprings or what? The amount of effort that these people have been putting into the Doctrine of late is so impressive that I just had to write a Post.  Behind the scenes (and in one case), so not behind the scenes, these folks not only are a credit to their type (clark or scott or roger) but they are perfect examples of their type.  (For the new visitors, Progenitors are one of the three namesakes of the theory of…. and DownSprings are the people who have learned of the Wakefield Doctrine directly from a Progenitor and has chosen to work to advance the great mission of bringing the Doctrine to the world. That and get themselves a hat (for their damn heads).

Joan of Arc

roger, (the Progenitor) has been pushing for some sort of static information to be placed on the ‘homepage/landing page’ or whatever the hell you call the first place you come to when you arrive. Well-reasoned and totally founded in the conservative-tradition-promulgating-drive of all rogers. He did advocate this fairly early in the development of the blog and more recently he stepped up and said, ‘hey, why don’t you have something with bullet points, a list of information and guides so people will know that it is normal to think they are all three or other stuff? Now leave me alone, I need to write a novel, binyons’.

joanne and glenn have been hard at work behind the scenes. joanne (aka the Mistress of the Questionaires) was recently observed chillin out a potential conflict amongst Commentationers a few Posts ago. With her trademark low key way, she totally averted a (metaphorical) fistfight from breaking out when the roger and glenn were  trying to  join forces and resist the correct and morally sanctioned guidance being offered by the Moderator. Joanne’s enthusiam (in this case, for ‘finding the globe thingie’) had them two cooling out…  peace and harmony prevailed. glenn, for his part, has been setting back and cultivating his strategy (to borrow a rogerian term), nothing goes on in the “mind” of a scott that is not billboard-obvious to clarks, but I suspect he be re-working his ‘set list’.

That being said, it is the recent efforts of the Raison-ettes that has me totally, sit-down, look-up, wtf impressed. The Raison-ettes is/are, of course, our own Ms. AKH and DownSpring#1 (DS#1). And if you ask what the name means,  ( Hey, ¿qué diablos es el trato con ese nombre … Raison-Ettes? ¿Es que algún tipo de sociedades secretas galliec …) well, I got no good answer.
But I will say this, the Wakefield Doctrine is glad they are on our side.

Ms. AKH… energy? enthuusiasm?? Does the Pope Baptize bears in the woods? Ms. AKH is the newest of the DownSprings but she a walking illustration of the scottian female. You saw her writing Comments as soon as she joined the Doctrine, many of the early ones were a little short on the technical aspects of the Doctrine, but right from the first there was that scottian confidence. (there is an old saying: a scott is often wrong, but never uncertain). Needless to say, AKH was an immediate asset to this thing of ours, but it was not until the beginning of the 90 Day Challengethat we saw the full-monty. She has taken to the Challenge like Joan of Arc at a barbecue!  She has, in the last week or so, been (nearly) everywhere that there might be an opportunity or improvement, technique or strategy (that) could be used to help us meet the November deadline.  For starters, go take a look at her facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/?sk=app_2309869772#!/profile.php?id=1018208475&v=info but better plan on pitching in and helping. In true scottian manner, MS AKH is all about getting people inspired to work towards achieving her goal. It is this ferocity of the scottian nature that she shows, not because of what we may say in one of these Posts, but simply because that is what a scott in her position would naturally do. Nice work.

The other half of the Raison-ettes is DS#1. Being a clark, well, you sorta have to make the effort to see her work, her contribution, her influence. Being a clark, DS#1 has worked to do whatever can be done to get this thing out there, in the werld. Like Sally Struthers at a pie eating contest, I could go on and on, but I won’t.  The thing about clarks, quiet, reserved, weird, funny dressers that they are, is that they will always surprise people.  For instance, we have been writing, in these Posts recently, about how maybe we need to find a way to share the experience of learning about clarks, scotts and rogers more directly with our Readers. Up until the creation of this blog,  the Doctrine has spread because glenn would stand next to a person and point out the rogers in the room or the Progenitor roger would be in some companies’ employee training room, sharing the secret (with the other rogers) of how to avoid being eaten by the scott at the front of the room. It has all been direct, word of mouth, face to face  stuff like that.
For her effort to help keep this fuckin thing afloat, DS#1 went the direct route. It follows:

So let’s have a  round of applause for the effort of all the Progenitors and DownSprings. You know what they say about the Wakefield Doctrine!

We know why you are reluctant to Comment

Welacome to the aWakefielda Docttrina (dis is da tearey of die clark and da scotts and dem rogers der). This is the place you can really get something really useful from the internet experience. Really. My Doctrine, she gonna make you so a happy that you, you’re gonna wanna say, where she been all my life, eh? Its twue, its weally twue.*

Charismatic

When you  “get” this “Doctrine” you “will” finally understand why “everyone” acts like they “do”. What confused you about, these so-called “family members” and spouses (nyahh sp ow seses), all them who have been tormenting you while you try to understand what they want and give that to them. BUT! do they like WHAT you do for them? HUH? DO they? wait! wait! I can answer that question!! Call on me! Me!  The answer to your question is:
“No, no they do not”   (Thank you, thank you I studied so hard for this moment. I want to thank the Progenitor scott and the Progenitor roger and all the DownSprings, thank you! thank you! thank you!)

Welll… (as a leading scott would be heard to say, just before totally firing some poor college student who was only working at the timeshare resort for the summer, in the hopes of making some money for school). Little did they realise what they were getting themselves into… In fact, have I ever mentioned that I survived and even flourished in the totally insane, twisted-personality realm of timeshare sales? And that that was only because of my understanding of the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)? Well, I did! Remind me sometime to tell y’all about it. It’s about half interesting.)

Anyway, I think I getting back to writing about what the current thinking at the Wakefield Doctrine is, vis ‘a vis getting Readers to Comment and participate and generally get us all famous and shit. Quick background, we know people are visiting and reading the Doctrine and we know that some people come back and read on a fairly regular basis. We also know that (other than Progenitors and DownSprings) there has not been a lot of participation from these putative Readers. So, what gives?
One opinion, offered by Friend of the Doctrine Mel, is that Commenting on a blog like this is kinda intimidating. Intimidating!?! What the hell is that supposed to mean??!! Wft we ask real, real nice for people to write a Comment, we even offer to give them a frickin, free, frickin hat (for their damn frickin heads)! How intimidating is that? Hey!! I asked you a goddamn question! How-Intimidating-Is-That??!!!

So, maybe there is some possibility that people might feel that they are expected to answer in a way that might be judged. But we do not mean that. When I say, “there are no stupid questions, there are just your questions”, I mean that in a kind and supportive way. We have all been where you are, and we truly invite  a reasoned and constructive response to our Posts, do you think you can manage to muster** a little initiative and write something? If we were all rogers here, we would come right out and ask you to Comment in a way that would sound like you would be the one missing out, if you did not Comment. But then, we are not all rogers here. Are we?

While that might be the reason (for the lack of participation) I have recently come to the conclusion that we have simply failed in conveying the basic concept of the Wakefield Doctrine to you Readers. When I think about how we got to this point (of the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers) I realise that most of the time has been spent ‘in person’ with people and saying things like, ‘look at that person, watch how they react, they are such clarks or scotts or rogers’. Even more basic than that, the beginning of spreading the word involved people who knew the Progenitors directly, so it was so easy to say, ‘you know how roger always does that’, or ‘now watch how mad scott gets when I…’ It was very easy to convey the elements of this theory of clarks, scotts and rogers, the (future) Wakefield Doctrine.

It is just that, after the immediate circle of friends learned this thing of ours, they were telling people they knew about clarks, scotts and rogers. It became apparent (or at least seemed apparent) that people liked it and were inclined to share it with others and the Doctrine was simply enough to spread that way. And so the Wakefield Doctrine blog came into existence. But the gap, the ‘one wayedness’ of writing a blog is a difficult hurdle to overcome. Combined with what we might charitably call rudimentary writing skills, we need to find a way to communicate the fun, the positive benefits, the value of the Wakefield Doctrine in such a way, that after reading this, people will say, “Yeah I know what those people mean!”

As you see, we have the Raison-ettes writing and contributing in the hopes of providing as much of the sense of the Doctrine as is possible. Maybe the only answer is to take it on the road. Rent halls in large cities and train people directly to carry the message of the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers out to the world.
