TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

This is the Ten Things of Thankful(TToT) bloghop. Since the first installment until today, a span of over twenty-three years, the TToT has enjoyed the privilege of offering the observations of a remarkably diversified group of writers, all written to a common theme: describe, (and thereby share), those people, places and things that have caused them to experience gratitude.

Thats Ola, at the top of the post. She was a good dog.

1) Una

2) Phyllis

Bella (Phyllis was Bella’s alpha).
This relationship, all too rare in life, reminds us of our highest potential, while requiring us to give it our all.

3) the Wakefield Doctrine (the sine qua non of this here blog here)

4) Serial stories: ‘the Case of the Missing Fig Leaf‘, ‘the Whitechapel Interlude‘ and ‘The Proprietors

5) Hey, that last serial story? Just getting started. It’s an experiment and practice in the writing thing. That said, there are Readers at that particular platform (Wattpad). You wanna be in a story? No, seriously! It (writing fiction) is way more fun than watching tv. Not so much ’cause we can do better, (example: ‘The Good Place‘ and ‘The Blacklist’. aii-fricken-yeee! such writing, such talent, such skill). But, you know what they say, if you want to get better at something, practice. (‘How do I get to Carnegie Hall?… ba-rum-bump!) So the story thing. If you want to go play in an unlimited and imaginary reality, let us know.

6) the Six Sentence Story. place to got and see how it’s done. Flash fiction at it’s best, serial stories, and one-offs. It’s all there executed by very talentacious* writer-people.

7) Progress on P’s cottage home office. rough electrical is in.

8) something, something

9) Work: continues to be a daily opportunity to self-develop ourslefs… not just professionally (though the most critical lessons learned in the real estate business are usually burned into one’s being. Hair was never meant to remain the same color, ya know?) but personally.

10) Secret Rule 1.3 ’cause what kinda club do you have if you don’t have secret rules. (Lesser known fact: the first club came into existence a ‘who-the-heck-is-that’ moment after the third person entered the world. (Wakefield Doctrine c. 2009-2022)

Five Minute Friday -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Five Minute Friday?

Sure. Why the heck not write with a time limit*?

Among other things, the Wakefield Doctrine is meant to be simple (but not easy), useful (this, btw, is a secret hint as to the qualities necessary to have fun here) and productive (no, not in a “I will measure your efforts here at school/work/home/first-date/last-chance, so there’s nothing to worry about.”) to the individual trying to navigate the day today in the world around them and the people who make it up.

Ready? (Our approach will be simplest. We’ll set the timer on our solid-state telephone to five minutes and when I hear the ‘Times Up!’ song (which is posted below (not part of the timed section because, well, it’s part of the set up, ya know?**)

The (don’t stop for spelling!!! you gots 4:38 seconds!!!). the Wakefield Doctrine is an additional perspective on the world around us and the people who make it up. (Alert and Regular Readers will at some point take note of that peculiar wording “…and the people who make it.” That is quite deliberate and a bit on the metaphysical side. It is meant to remind us that all real, to small but very real degree is personal. And, if it is personal, then we are part of the process of creating it.)

There are three ‘personality types’ in the Doctrine:

  1. Outsider(clarks
  2. Predator(scotts)
  3. Herd Members(rogers)

We grow up and develop into one (and only one) of these three because that is the nature or character of the reality we are experiencing. So, when you think about it, we’re all perfect for the world as we experience and the people who are around us are all playing their part.

(Hands up in the air as the Guess Who start to play.)

This Five Minute thing might be a bit overly ambitious, but hey, whatta gonna do***

* nope, hasn’t started yet… don’t worry, we’ll tell you when

** why yes, this is the default tuneage we use on the timer… an old song.  hold on, let me paste it in below.

*** of course there are, like a couple of thousand other posts, if, you know, you get curious about this thing of ours.

…jeez! what the hell!?! The top replay number is, like, 259,292… that strikes me as way lower than it should be, given that the band (Sage) the progenitor scott and progenitor roger were in, used to play it all the time…

Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

An Eastern rig of similar configuration to the Christine Denise, the fishing boat in this week’s Six. Note: net drum on the stern, one of the pair of gallows frame on rail next to wheelhouse and, forward, the doghouse (access down to the foc’sle) just in front of the mast (with a red arc of a life preserver on the side).

This is the Wakefield Doctrine’s contribution to the Six Sentence Story bloghop.

Run by Denise

This week, what say we get some backstory on one our favorite characters, Ian Devereaux?

This week’s prompt word:

Board

“Requesting permission to come on board,” seeing how I’d already stepped off the gunnel of the Eastern rig, Christine Denise, I was fairly certain that gravity wouldn’t insist on an explicit assent to my request; the owner/captain, standing next to the main hatch to the fish hold was clearly an adherent of the belief that gravity trumps social niceties, nodded towards the bow, “Pick yourself a bunk, Mr. Devereaux, and as soon as the other two hands get here, we’ll ice up at the co-op and head out.”

The boat was eighty-five feet long, the wheelhouse was aft and the foc’sle was forward; being an old wooden boat, it had an oil-fired black-iron stove for cooking and heat, a soapstone sink with a mechanical hand-pump for water, up against the bulkhead dividing the crew quarters from fish-hold and, on the port side, an ice box plentifully supplied with the shaved ice that filled half the empty fish-hold; an empty five gallon bucket with a frayed yellow nylon halyard was back at the stern, the lazarette (behind the wheelhouse) allowed shelter when answering nature’s call in the winter or other inclement weather.

As soon as I stood both feet on the asphalt squares covering the deck, I was struck by something, either a smell or an odor or a scent, I knew with non-rational certainty it was of a home assigned to me like some Jungian archetype, so in tune with my true nature I need not be concerned with understanding; both a reveille and lullaby it was salt air laced with the iodine smell of dried seaweed and rotting fish, a vin de mémoire, with a diesel exhaust finish.

I laughed at the life-script logic that took me from a Bachelor’ of Arts in psychology to half-a-JD degree, (from Harvard, no less), to commercial fisherman; in my defense, my wife Haley was two semesters from graduating with an offer from the top law firm in Rhode Island; seeing how we lived in Narragansett, which was home to more fishing trawlers than boutique law firms, it only made sense for me to quit school and provide for our future life together working as a deckhand.

“We’re bound at six this evening for Hudson Canyon, looking for fluke,” the captain walked down the slope of the deck along the starboard side, past the twin hydraulic winches and sat on the rail just behind the gallows frame where currently one of the two steel otter doors was wedged; tow wire ran outboard on either side of the boat, and when dragging the net, would disappear into the ocean behind us.

It occurred to me I might have found my natural environment, one in which ninety-degree angles and straight-lines were the exception rather than the rule and the horizon was not a destination as much as it was a reminder that some places in life are not meant to be reached.

RePrint Monday -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Lets go look for the first April 11th post we can find. (Damn! From 2010, the first full year of this here blog here.):

So we begin…the second half (of the beginning) of this thing of ours

Expect significant changes in the layout of this blog in the coming weeks, changes that reflect function as well as form.  Posts will continue to be central to the blog, but we will be creating separate areas dedicated to on-going features, including but not limited to: ‘Case Studies’, activities at Millard Fillmore High, Interviews by and with Progenitors and Downsprings, and other fun activities.

The reason for the change is simply, it is time.

This will be the place to learn about, express, correct and add to the Wakefield Doctrine (aka theory of Clarks, Scotts and Rogers.)
This theory proposes that all people have (from the start of life) three distinct ways of relating to the world.
It is a given that we are all  born with the qualities (of each form) as potential.  At some point a predominance/predilection for one (of the three) forms expresses itself.  A clark or a scott or a roger is born.  No one is simply a clark or a scott or a roger.  Just mostly.  As a clark, as a scott or as a roger. ( June 25 2009)

(That was from our very first Post.  Not that we are much clearer on what it is we are trying to do with the Doctrine, but we are having more fun trying.)

In the original ‘plan’ for this blog, the Pages were to contain the facts/information/knowledge of the Doctrine.  The Posts, on the other hand, were thought to simply provide a place for Commentary.  However, in the process of writing the Pages and the Posts…

…what’s that?…good question…What is the Objective of this blog?… What do you mean?  Haven’t we addressed this  yet?…we haven’t… shit.
……..I apologise.

Been so intent on writing Posts and trying to come up with different ways to talk about the Wakefield Doctrine, that I have not noticed that, for longer than I realise, I have been  ‘talking to strangers’.  Before this blog, the Wakefield Doctrine was simply the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers. (As in: ‘hey don’t get him started about his thing about how there are only three kinds of people in the world named after his friends, you won’t be able to get him to shut up).
The Objective, the goal, the reason and the point of effort is to get as many people as possible to understand and apply the Doctrineto their lives. So, not such an ambitious goal, is it? It comes down to seeing people benefit from knowing the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers.

You do know that this is not really a theory, at least not as commonly defined:
1. A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena; 2. A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment

Hey!, wait a minute now,  maybe I will hang my hat on #2:  ‘a belief…that guides action or assists comprehension’.
Yeah, I can live with that definition, a belief that guides comprehension. If you know how a scott is experiencing the world, you will know how they will act in any situation; same is true for clarks and rogers.

So, back to those changes.  Soon this blog will have 5 sections: (a) Post; (b) Principles of the Doctrine; (c) Examples of the Doctrine; (d) Application of the Wakefield Doctrine; and (e) Fun Stuff.

Not certain about how it will actually look, if anyone has any suggestions about the layout, feel free to leave a Comment.

You know,  this is all about you (the Reader) having the experience of hearing someone (in your life) that you have not mentioned the Wakefield Doctrine to, hearing them say, “jeez he is such a roger” or “that’s not too scottian is it?”
Think about how much fun that will be!  Until then we will keep coming up with new, different and fun ways to present the Wakefield Doctrine, (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers).

You know you’re right! What’s a Post without a contest?  …why a hat (for your damn head) what else would we be giving away?  Lets make that a 3 part contest!*

To win simply let us know:
A) Who (of the three)  you think you will hear an (unprompted) reference to the Doctrine from in your own world? (your clarklike friend, your scottian or rogerian friend);
B) What you would want to read (on a shirt). (Sorry I already have mine in: “I (heart) Janie Sullivan“);
C) Go over to (friend of the Doctrine) Mel’s Spatula in the Wilderness and get him to give you a free t-shirt/shamwow/emergency mop, document that to us and we will give you a hat (for your damn head).

So until the next Post… Hey what’s up with the visiting only on Wed/Thurs?
No!  We are not giving up on Janie and the kids at MillFill High…(I did say there would be a section called Fun Stuff)

*

Not markedly different in (writing) style or voice, from today.

Updated insight into the core topic (of reprint): What we reference, i.e. “…if you know how a scott is experiencing the world, you will know how they will act in any situation.” is still very much a true value to this thing of ours. Sure, maybe it’s only clarks who hold as a value the capacity to predict the future behavior of the people around them, but it is part of what the Wakefield Doctrine has to offer those who would avail themselves of an additional perspective.

Reminder: as simple as the above ambition is, it is very not easy. To know how another will act in a situation not yet encountered, requires we appreciate the personal reality in which they exist. Fortunately we have the Everything Rule (‘Everyone does everything, at one time or another’) to remind us that although we live in one (of the three) predominant worldviews (aka personal realities), we never lose the potential to experience the world as do ‘the other two’. All it takes? A willingness to let go of the certainty-of-truth that imbues the reality with a quality of exclusivity that transcends personal opinion.

or something like that…

TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

This is the Doctrine’s contribution to the Ten Things of Thankful (TToT) bloghop.

The object (of the exercise) is to write (in a list) those people, places and things that have inspired, incited, instigated and otherwise did one of those elbows in the side ribs (a gesture usually restricted to those who are close enough to not be surprised (or annoyed) when you do the same thing to them. At a different, but suitably appropriate time.)

There are usually Ten Items listed in a TToT post.

1) Una (photo above, this afternoon, enjoying the backyard)

2) Phyllis (photo above, the sign from her father’s practice was a-fixed to her treehouse

3) the Wakefield Doctrine

4) serial story(s) the Whitechapel Interlude, the Case of the Missing Fig Leaf and, possibly*, ‘The Proprietors

5) progress on Phyllis’ home office/cottage (the power was connected to the cottage, buried underground, hence the non-grass area of lawn).

6) the Six Sentence Story

7) A complete week without snow

8) something, something

9) modern technology

10) Secret Rule 1.3

* only a Prologue and a draft Chapter 1 (which should be live by end of day)
