Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine- “…a noun, a verb and a participle walk into a bar.”

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

article-taiji-chin-na

Here we are at Thursday already, which means it’s time of the delightful, self-induced torment that accompanies my determined effort to meet the challenge of zoe (nee Josie)’s  ‘Six Sentence Story‘.  It’s fun. It’s aggravating and I believe I learn something every time I hit publish.

It took only a glance to know the TV antenna was damaged beyond repair, the real question was how to disconnect it and throw it from the roof, thin metal arms bent in every possible direction, a single mass, courtesy of the wires that connected the parts and once gave life and function to this relic of pre-cable TV. Wire cutters and an increasing desire to be anywhere but on a roof, made subtlety and finesse the briefest of distractions, clip<>…clip<>…pull<<…clip<>…pull<<, free of attachments, all that remained was to move it to the roof’s edge where, after glancing over the edge, a single push on the tangled mess, and the post-storm job was over.

almost, because the worst still lay ahead, as everything about the ladder screamed uncertainty and danger. Having no other choice, he turned back, facing the only solid spot in his world that wasn’t 16 feet down,  stepped out into the air, found a rung with his right foot, committed his weight and the ladder, slid on the wet deck below, moving in the only direction possible, outward, the once solid ladder turning into something that moved, and moving downwards faster than his field of vision could account for, became un-important.  As he continued in the falling, a variety of things acquired importance and value, as they came into view, the gutter on the edge of the roof, approached him from below,  the thought,  “..in the movies‘ filled his mind, temporarily displacing the non-verbal,  non-rational, primal thoughts:   ‘STOP FALLING” (and) “GRAB SOMETHING”, like the darkness of a romantic evening, washed out by the light of a Sunday morning, the gutter kept moving by, passing from down to up, once out of sight, losing all significance.

Hitting the wooden deck below, his first feeling was relief,  that there was something underneath him that remained in place, there followed then, the cautious checking of what he was, before the world stopped mattering, moving first arms and then legs and finding everything moving as he would will them, lay back in the rain and waited for his world to re-assemble.

Wednesday -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘so much ado about nothing, is what she’d try to say’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

20150603_091730_resized

the Wakefield Doctrine is a perspective on the behavior of the people in our lives and a way to better understand the underlying context of our own interaction with the world each day.

the Assessment we ran in yesterday’s Post is always fun, in part, because it’s premise lies in everyday situations that we all encounter, in one form or another. One of the hallmarks of popular ‘your-personality-type’ quizzes,  is the set of survey questions, (usually found in popular magazines, tabloid newspapers or nowadays, online) that reveal much about human nature. It’s been said in these pages, about these ‘personality tests’, that they are ‘club-shaped mirrors’. We say that for the simple reason that, more often than not, the second thing a person who has read one will be heard to say is, “Honey? come here! you have to take this survey, it so has you down to a ‘T'”
Which is why we say, ‘the Wakefield Doctrine is for you, not them’. This is a clever (and hopefully rememberable) way to remind us that all the Wakefield Doctrine offers is: a) an additional perspective and 2) an opportunity to further understand ourselves and, by doing so, better understand the people in our lives.

the Wakefield Doctrine is not:

  • the Answer… hell, it’s barely one among the countless possible Answers… nope! not even going that far, it’s one of the (better) Questions (to ask oneself, if, oneself has a genuine interest in understanding the people in their lives)
  • …a way to get people to change the behavior that is clearly not good for them:  i.e. ‘he can’t make up his mind between a Lawnboy 43 Power Cutter and a Lawnboy 34 Power Cutter (with grass catcher free!!) and wants to go back to home depot for a 4th time to get another look’; …’if she won’t stop talking about the person who cut in line at the supermarket, despite the fact that everyone in the line, even the checkout girl (with all the jewelry stuck on her face!) all scowled and clearly disapproved of the behavior and they still cut in line’;  …’your son/daughter, who has all of the best in sneakers and running shoes and brothers and sisters and everything else for fun-in-the-sun insists on sitting somewhere with those books/games/drawing pads and be by themselves’   the Wakefield Doctrine will not change them*
  • a way to convince yourself that: what you think (and somehow know better)/ you keep doing (and despite the increasingly negative backlash)/ feel all the time, even though you know better than to feel that way   however

the Wakefield Doctrine is one more way to see/appreciate/understand our behavior and the behavior of the people in our lives.

… if there is a proper way to use the principles of the Wakefield Doctrine, it is to be able to see the world as the other person is experiencing it.

* unless….  they happen upon this here blog here, then well, that’s a different story… but you already knew that, didn’t you?

how cool is Tuesday? -the Wakefield Doctrine’ “…today we invite you to contribute to the Wakefield Doctrine…sort of

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

teachers_handsraised

So we used to have people, (mostly scotts, btw), who would say, “I like the Doctrine, it’s fun and funny and sometimes, by letting me know how clarks and rogers think and feel, it helps me be a better Predator! But, it would be a lot quicker if you just had a test or a quiz or something that your Readers could read and answer questions and, at the end, know which of the three personality types they are!!! You know?!!  Can you do that?!  Can, you huh? Can you??! Come on!! I know you can….  !!!”

Sure. We could do that. In fact, we did. And if you take the Assessment and follow directions on scoring, you’ll more than likely get the correct answer to which of the three is your predominant worldview.* But, two things:

  1. if we accept the premise that having an ‘objective’ test or measure for Readers to use to facilitate their learning, the bigger the test the better. No! really! That’s not just my opinion, it’s a damn fact1  or not
  2. I believe we said in the last Post that this theory of clarks, scotts and rogers first and foremost is meant to be fun and, statistics and tediously precise measurement and math and such is not! (Unless you’re a roger and then it’s like being in church or on a date (and it’s a sure thing) or building a ship-in-a-bottle or having a dinner party and the table looks exactly like the photo in the cookbook or you’re riding your 27 speed, hybrid-carbon-fiber-with-the-speedometer-that-goes-to-something-totally-silly-like-60mph, callibrated-ergo-meter and 2 mirrors on  your .0003 drag co-efficient helmet and you look around at the other riders and realize that you’re in front ….then you’re total in heaven)
  3. that being said, I would like to have more sample questions/scenarios/life situations for the Assessment and…. and, if anyone has any ideas how I can keep track of the results (there is currently no way to know how many people have taken the Assessment and, of them, how many are clarks or scotts or rogers), I’m totally open to suggestion. (Well, I am a clark! lol)
  4. So. Go take the Assessment. Come back here. In the Comments Section below, write us a little life scenario. Don’t worry about coming up with the ‘what would you do’…although, if you know what the three answers should be, go ahead and include them! As you can see, if the current Assessment,  if your life situation works as an Assessment Question, we’ll totally give you credit.

Be sure to play along today!

* except when your score comes out evenly distributed among the three, then you’ll know for total certain, which of the three personality types you are…lol

1) our friends at ‘the wikipedia’ say this about that:

In statistics, statistical significance (or a statistically significant result) is attained when a p-value is less than the significance level. The p-value is the probability of obtaining at least as extreme results given that the null hypothesis is true whereas the significance or alpha (α) level is the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis given that it is true. As a matter of good scientific practice, a significance level is chosen before data collection and is usually set to 0.05 (5%). Other significance levels (e.g., 0.01) may be used, depending on the field of study

TToT Sunday Supplement -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘of roadtrip-ettes, zoe and self-developing oneself’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

(god! I have no idea!!)

(god! I have no idea!!)

Why yes, this is one of the stranger Posts, here at the Wakefield Doctrine. The question you will (want) to ask yourself, at this very early stage, is, “…does a stranger suggesting that I ask myself this question annoy me or does it make me want to smile (to myself). And who do they think they are, trying to tell me what I should be asking myself?!!”

We’ve been hoping you would stop by. This Wakefield Doctrine blog is the kind of place that, of the many who pass through, a very select few stop long enough to check and see if what they thought they read, really was what someone intended to write. And… of that small group, a much smaller number decided that checking the Facebook or twittering a recipe, could wait just a little longer. Well, it’s probably time to tell you that, by virtue of reading this far, you’ve placed your self in this last group. It’s been written here, since the beginning, that the people who read and ‘get’ and enjoy this blog are those with a special kind of …mind….imagination….curiosity, a certain self-confidence and a flexible intelligence that makes finding oddly interesting things, (and places and, especially, people), a necessary element to their lives.

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine.

(Quick intro) While we’re sorta proud of the fact that the Wakefield Doctrine, as a ‘personality theory’, is totally anecdotal, lacking in charts and stats, chi squares and control groups… we are confident in the power of whatever it is, (about this perspective on human behavior), that makes the Wakefield Doctrine so useful and helpful and fun. In any event, we have three personality types, two directives and a fair amount of laughter.

the personality types:

  • clarks (the Outsider)
  • scotts (the Predator)
  • rogers (the Herd Member)

the two directives:

  1. with the Doctrine as (an additional) perspective, go out and make the effort to ‘try and see the world as the other person is experiencing it’
  2. remember that; ‘the Wakefield Doctrine is for you, not them’

… ok! That’s all you get, seeing as this is a supplemental Sunday TToT Supplement!

oh yeah!   almost forgot!  The subtitle?

  • the road trip-ette is a thing that is beginning to take shape in my mind for early August. The elements are: a concert, Cambridge, self-Challenge (for a clark)
  • the ‘zoe reference’ is (to) Friend of the Doctrine zoe (aka Ivy) who is embarking on a project her ownself that, although it’s only involving her, a benefit is to be gained by others who might follow along.  One of the interesting, (though not  original with the Wakefield Doctrine),  things around here is the deliberate effort to cultivate ‘identification’. (Which) we chose to define as: finding commonality (mental, emotional, spiritual) with another person and, by virtue of this connection, self-enhance ourselves.
Anyway, long story, if you’re a new Reader and  find this of particular interest, you might want to check out the section on clarks first (under subject heading: ‘who could possibly understand what I’m going through‘…lol)

TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine- “so, now it’s fun to worry about the difference between i.e. and e.g.?! my god! what’s happening to me?!?!”

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

"thank god! it was just another tree falling!"

“thank god! it was just another tree falling!”

1) When did writing Posts (completely) replace the ‘television’ as my preferred diversion? Sure, there is scant viewing worth the effort on the limited cable subscription that we have here, but as I write this, “How It’s Made’ and ‘Family Guy’ are both on and they’re reasonably worthwhile shows. What’s not reasonably worthwhile, is ‘Naked Dating’.  This is one of those situations that find me wishing I had paid attention in English class and, as a result, might today be a better writer, as there is so much about this show, the concept, the execution, the audience that is inferred by the simple fact that there is a show called, ‘Naked Dating’, that I would enjoy discussing…. but alas, I don’t know where to begin, e.g….. no! i.e.  (lol)

2) Una… who surely exemplifies (an) ideal. At least she does, for those of us living in the world of clarks, i.e. the Outsider.

3) I am grateful for easy access to grammar lessons, courtesy of ‘the google’, as inferred by today’s Post’s subtitle.

4) the ‘Hurry-up and Weight Gravity Challenge‘ gang! ( kristi and christine, lisa and joy, val and alex)  they are an amazing group of people.

5) thanks to zoe (and step-creator Josie) for the Six Sentence Story blog… I’m enjoying the challenge these last couple of weeks. (yes, I am surprised at that!)

6) Phyllis (who, now that Una has her own Item), surely has warranted a separate Item.  …. ok! all set!!  (hey, here’s a photo of Una from her walk last night!)  The treehouse is pretty much complete… just a couple of little touch-ups. I’ll post some ‘Finished Tree House’ photos in next week’s TToT.

20150724_181444_resized

(wish I could claim credit, but the cool, ‘blurred-motion background effect’ was totally accidental.)

7) Lizzi and the co-hostinae for the continuing life of this bloghop. Granted there are weeks when I’m all, ‘man! there’s no way I can come up with anything for the List, never mind anything half-interesting and/or grateful-like‘… fortunately for me, those who participate, new and not-new alike, seem possessed of an endless supply of tolerance for the ….oddly written, gratitude list(s).

8) Gotta mention the Book of Secret Rules (aka the Secret Book of Rules). What with the membership showing a high percentage of new participants each week, (this influx of new writers, is, in my opinion, not only the key to a bloghop staying fresh and relevant, it also serves as an effective barometer of the ‘tone’ of the bloghop.) The sense of welcome and camaraderie is surely healthy and vibrant when we see new people join-in each week.

9) … but since the title has the word ‘Secret’ in it, I’ll take the extra step and say to new TToTeers…. the Secret Book of Rules (SBoR/BoSR) is there for you to use… provided you can find it. It’s a very comprehensive Book, …provided you can figure it out. And, sure, use it anytime!! …provided you’re will to take the chance.  (lol… all I’ll say is, ‘if you’re the worrying type and wish to do things correctly and properly, you might want to check with kristi (or Michelle)  and then, if you’re still determined to take a chance….zoe (for expert insight into a certain group of Virgins).   Of course, if you’re not the worrying type…. then head over and see Dyanne.)

10)  1.3  y’all   1.3!!
