Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)
Last night was one of the WDSN* Drives that reminded me of what the fun of these weekly outings is…
The evening started with regulars, Denise1 and Molly2 which bode(d) well, right from the proverbial ‘get go’. We talked about Molly’s getting her green belt in Tae Kwon Do, that very day. We talked about performance (as ‘before an audience’), identification as a strategy to overcome self-consciousness and intention. In the midst of this discussion, the caller announcer lady3 interupts us with, “...the Caller...”
and we hear a voice, “Alex”.
Now, I have a friend by the name of Alex, (he calls in on the rare occasion4 ) and there is a ‘Friend of the Doctrine’ by the name of Alex Crabtree (who we haven’t heard from in a fair while)… in any event we had a semi-racous conversation. The topics were varied at first, but eventually focused on a scenario that I dredged out of my pre-conscious, of a situation that I witnessed in a hospital waiting room about 5 years ago. Long story…interesting responses from those in attendio
With Alex, now ‘in the dashboard’, we had a scottian perspective which, almost always produces an interesting perspective when brought into a conversation among clarks.
Then! ….then! …5 minutes before the end of the Drive, another Caller…. another scott! …another Alex, no less.
As Edgar sang once, ‘we all had a real good time’.
* Wakefield Doctrine Saturday Night
1) clark with secondary scottian aspect ( Cs )
2) clark with secondary rogerian aspect ( Cr )
3) the lovely voiced-voice that welcomes you ‘to the Wakefield Doctrine, the theory of clarks, scotts and row-gers’…loo
4) well..maybe not so rare, (this) Alex called in during the Call in as I drove down from the high desert in Arizona a few weeks ago
Sounded like another great Saturday night call-in and hope you are having a great weekend Clark!! :)
@Janine
..you too (it’s not snowing!)
Thank you for the “if a tree falls” reference, I find myself using that more than I would like. Often referring to myself saying something important, as I am struck with the realization that no one’s listening.
Also…..wondering? Who looks at old-timers with respect anymore? I mean, hey….sounds great and all, but with this attitude of nihilism and/or egocentricity that seems to pervade the current “younger” generation. Will there ever be that respect towards elders that we grew up knowing?
@Jen
Forgive my my parochialism, but I hear what you say and I know among us clarks, we share that wondrous/horrifying/perplexing/unifying experience of have ‘days when we are invisible’ paradoxically it is this that allows clarks to identify other clarks…
Sounds like fun. I was out of town, but that conversation HAD to be interesting with some scotts and clarks peppered with roger secondary aspects. LOL
@Cyndi
true dat, suspect we will be getting more participation from our scottian and rogerian friends in the future, it’s fun to hear the genuine article
Hi Clark! It looks like you had a great evening. I wonder about the nature of conversation in general, between people…because many of us have more than just a Rogerian or Clarklike personality…and that secondary aspect can definitely kick in at times. I am sharing!
@Michelle
well it seems the most challenging part in finding an approach that is, in fact productive, lies in understanding what exactly happens, am I perceiving my clarklike worldview as a clark would or am I witnessing another person (say a scott) acting in a manner consistent with the worldview of a scott and it is the insufficiency of my worldview to interpret it …or what! lol We make progress, slowly but surely.
