I’ve been waiting for this theme for months! This week is “Epics” song’s that tell a story. Not songs that share an emotion, not your simple verse chorus verse bridge verse chorus reprise. Give me a storyline people, what happened? How did it start where did it go?

I’ll be honest, the reason I’ve been rubbing my little hands together waiting for this day is this song, I’ve got nothing to say, except I loved this movie, Cult Classics always hold a special place in my heart.

Hey, have you ever been driving along the highway in the fast lane and looked over at the cars racing in the opposite direction?  Most of the time, wherever the Interstate cuts through a city, there’s no median divider to speak of, so when you look to your left, there are cars not more than a travel lane away, speeding past, going somewhere, …the other way.  And, you know how sometimes, the light is just right and the song on your radio fades out and you happen to glance over out to the left and see, in a single second/forever a car with people in it, going the other way… sometimes a single driver, but it’s better when you also see a passenger, head turned to the driver, or they are sideways in their seat, obviously including the people in the backseat in whatever conversation is going on…and at that moment you get a sense of … real people…  going somewhere. Perhaps to visit or maybe returning from a trip and, in that split second,  you sense that  these are people with their own life history, stories and family traditions. maybe there are children in the back seat who are excited to be going somewhere, or maybe the passenger is working up the courage to tell the driver that it’s over… they might even all be on their way to a funeral… but in the split second you see their faces ( at a combined speed of over 100 mph) you know there are stories…tales, glimpses of lives.

This week Jen Kehl and Kristi charge us with compiling a list of songs that tell a tale, a MixTape of Myths and Legends….and stories.

So, here you go. I thought to try to order the songs in a way that would manifest a certain progression or logical sequence  a… musical narrative arc  if you will, but then I thought, nah.  If the songs take hold of your imagination…then like your split-second view into the lives of others on the Interstate, you will have to take it as it comes to you.

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

I cannot tell you how much I love and relate to the whole seeing a whole other life due to passengers in the passing freeway lane. I think about this all of the time and didn’t even realize it enough to articulate it. Wow. Dude. Get OUT of my head. Or not. Thank you. I’m not the only one.

(in a totally non-creepy way) I knew that you would… rather, ( I should say that) I was hoping to hear the echoes from this peculiarly clarklike thing to do, from you ..fricken Doctrine! it is so very cool

  2. “don’t you walk through my words”….cool line. haven’t listened to that song (or album) in decades. good one:)
the glimpsing of life, through a side glance…should happen more often….but then, it can be a frightening thing sometimes. (my cryptic, clarklike statement of the day)
the car thing is great if you’re with someone else. i generally like to compare “storylines” with my own passenger about the other people in the cars on the highway.

have to get to church now. later…..

  3. An eclectic mix you have today, Clark! Bizet and Lou Reed combined! Got to love Carmen. One of the first classical pieces I learnt on the piano, the abridged version, of course. Later progressed!

      Michelle

not an ‘active fan’ of opera when young(er), but I have always thought of music as…something special? unique? whatever the term to imply that I tend to respect all styles of music (which is not to say that I enjoy all styles of music) but…it’s fricken music and done well, in whatever style or genre how could you not sit and, at very least admire the creator of the thing?

  4. Dream says:

I got so caught up in the Lou Reed and then the Carmen that I almost completely forgot about the others. Nice interpretation of this week’s theme!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Dream

weird, ain’t it when you get the first song and (you think) you know where you’re going and then…something else diverts the path (and yet very often, this new trajectory carries it’s own logic/narrative thing…)

p.s. love the new look on ‘I Dream…’

  5. Someone had to include at least one aria this week. What could be more epic than opera?

  6. Kari says:

Ack! How could I not put Aqualung on my list! Definitely a story! Good pick! Love me some Jethro Tull (he’s so cool… …… <– that was a joke. … )

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Kari

…yeah know what you mean (by ‘ack!’) this week’s theme seems to be generating more than the usual… “sonovabitch!! that song!!! where the hell was my mind, missing that one!!”

  7. Quickstepp says:

heeeeeyyy Aqua Lung. My dad was a huge Jethro Tull fan. I actually have two of his records up as art in my room. Though his covers are a bit creepy, so I’m not sure what that says about me. Ian is a great story teller! We were just listening to some JT on my last trip home and my poor mom was miserable. She never “got it”.

  8. Oh WOW! You had me at Bizet!

    No. At the car thing.

    No…Bizet.

    Um.

    It was the car thing.

    Damnit.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Lizzi

Didn’t ya just love the car thing? (I say that as clark to a clark of course, …you ‘were there’ probably before you finished reading the ‘set up’… lol) (…frickin Doctrine!)

  9. Fancy Schmancy list today Mr.ScottRoger. Very, very nice.

  10. Jen says:

OK first of all, you know I love Church, I know every single word “The Preacher ate the bird right then and there!” I loved seeing him this summer, it was amazing. Also, great list! And I’d like to know who’s driving 100mph? hmm???

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Jen

Have not gotten to yet (see Lyle), need to do this thing. Actually now that you raise the question, I think I should have a different speed for the setup to really work! (Originally it was intended to convey the sense of 2 cars travelling ‘towards’ each other and their combined speed would be pretty impressive), but around here… highway average speed is more like 80 in one direction, so the combined speed should be 160… but that would sound silly and distract from the very serious matter of seeing into a car full of lives as you drive along.)
…I’m regretting the opera pick now, never really been a fan, but I keep coming back to the song… my favorite for this week.

  11. Niiice selection there, lol. Jethro? I’m friends with his granddaughter who plays the fiddle. Just sayin’ :)

  12. “Church” was just a fabulous song for me at the end of this day. Carmen remains to the day the only opera I have ever seen. Lincoln Center in NYC, it was wonderful. And I live with a Tull fanatic. He will be pleased. Great list.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

I never was much of a listener to opera, of course there are some that are so established that you couldn’t not at least recognize the music, Carmen, Barber of Seville but I remember when I first came across the libretto for Barber and it stuck me that there was a story here (obvious, I know…but) so it made sense when I came across the Aria to include it in today’s Tuesday.

hey! since you saw the opera… I am getting from the video that the character is what we would call a scott here at the Wakefield Doctrine (meaning very forthright, direct, sexually confident and aggressive) is that how the character is played in the opera?

      Lyle Lovett is amazing.

  13. DonettaS says:

Great list. Some I haven’t heard before. I adore Lyle Lovett’s voice in most songs he sings. I also love Lou Reed. The rest I;ll have to listen to right now and decide. I do enjoy learning new tunes.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Donetta

Lyle is so damn good! the 10cc is also interesting, and if I guess age correctly is before your time, so this might be a ‘find’ for you. Everyone knows Jethro Tull and Lou Reed, now theres an interesting song, kinda dark and drug-related, but then he is (or rather was, unfortunately) Lou Reed!
the last one you might like, the famous aria from the opera ‘Carmen’… I’ve never been an opera guy, but then a couple of years ago while looking for something to write about, I came across the libretto to ‘the Barber of Seville’ and was taken aback by the fact that…this was like a whole story. (lol… not the more sophisticated music fan, I know) but there it was and knowing that this wasn’t just a bunch of people in costumes singing unintelligibly made all the difference to me…in any event, each week in TMT I end up with one song of my own Post that I listen to over and over…guess which one?
