Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Twisted MixTape 20

Jen Kehl

Damn! I was enjoying the March of the Decades. How easy was it to produce a list of 5 (plus or minus) songs that you enjoyed in a 10 year baseline?

The theme this Week is ‘Duets and Duos’  I quote from our lustrous leader:  “Duets or Duos  (Two people who don’t normally sing together singing a song or a musical group that is 2 people, Simon and Garfunkel, Hall and Oates, etc.)”

I will admit to having to go and research duets, famous duets and famous two people singing togetha on all the below  except for:  Lyle & Emmylou  and Eminem & Dido and Dr. John & Rickylee those were already in my collection, just not under any Duet category.  I just have never attempted to categorize the music I enjoy listening to by anything other than: ‘Play anytime’   and ‘Play to create a mood’   (Hey! there’s a theme!  ‘songs that are useful to get her to…..’ sorry  Jen! did not mean to presume, I can see that you have themes lined up for us that will have me banging my head against this here monitor here until the end of the year’)

Special thanks to Kristi for her Post (which I have deliberately avoided reading as she has a way of capturing the clarklike worldview in such incredibly effective ways.  In any event, here are my selections for a mix tape for any occasion. Sort of…  I guess if we had to assign these songs a purpose  then I might say, to romance a clark:  #1 and #3… to romance a roger: #2 and (maybe) #3 …to romance a scott:  lol yeah, right like music is necessary

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

I complete love that you included the Dr. John/Ricky Lee Jones duet, which was followed by initial excitement at the Tony Bennett, then disappointment at his duet partner. Since I’m open-minded though, I listened to it and found myself entranced. And bravo on the Eminem/Dido choice.

      @Dream

I mentioned somewhere about the trouble created by not having a sufficiently musicological brain to categorize songs as ‘duets’… I had to run the songs I liked (in my head) in the hopes of remembering… ‘and there was another singer’! the Dr John was def like that (and the Eminem). the others I resorted to a search for the artist + duets except the Lyle Lovett which was the only one that came up ‘duet’

  2. Considerer says:

Ahhhhhhh I very nearly went with Stan. Glad you have it covered :D

  3. Great mix! I had never heard that Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga duet until now! Thanks for sharing! :)

  4. My first time linking up with Twisted Mixtape Tuesday…I think I’ll be loving this hop! Excellent choices, Clark. Methinks Eminem might be a Scott Roger.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Michelle

excellent call! I mean most of us would go for the scottian predominant (worldview) but catching that rogerian secondary aspect nice! (for all the tough guy swagger…there seems to be a little bit of the ‘personal’ to Mr. Mathers

  5. JenKehl says:

Thank you for that time tunnel of Lyle Lovet and….. and then Emmy-Lou Harris and …..
And how can you not like Rikki Lee and Dr John?
Also so love to hear Lady Gaga sing something beautiful…really, because she really has a beautiful voice. However I am guessing it is not 5 o’clock yet where miss cognac/brandy has in her hand…. who am i to judge?!
And the ending really is so sweet, it brought tears to my eyes. Same with my Tony Bennet pick, he really is amazing isn’t he?
I wish I could love eminem, but I can’t eve try, because I have an 8yo. Not appropriate Mr Eminem. But the song, is pretty darn cool.
Love this list Sir, every week I am more and more impressed.

hey… Lyle Lovett! what can he do that I wouldn’t like? (though I’m glad he told someone that he didn’t need the giant bouf). I mentioned somewhere today that Lyle was the first/only name that came to mind when I started the process (duets…duets!!!)
Others required searching on artists I like and (hoping) to find a duet… the Dr John in that category.

I mentioned in my ‘lead in’ that I am not overly vocal-centric in my music appreciation…but through this week’s exercise I am gaining another way/facet to my enjoyment of music, specifically that ‘something’ that happens when two artists work together.
I like Gaga, mostly because she is such a clark and you can see that in the video, not just in her singing but in her ‘regard’ for Tony Bennett (the Wakefield Doctrine talks about becoming aware of how people ‘relate themselves to the world around them’ as a way of knowing much more about the person than what they may say or even do.)

As much as I may miss the fun of the Decades, this week’s MixTape Assignment, while more work, is much more rewarding.
      Thank you.

  6. troy P. says:

OK, love the list (again with Alison Krauss!), but I have to say what a kick it was to see Tony phone it in with the “get the hell away from me, ya creep” attitude throughout his video with Ga!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Troy

yeah, you got that too, huh? There was a distinct air of… (to paraphrse an old Chevy Chase line, “I’m Tony Bennett and you’re not”).
The next most hey-the-A&R-guys-say-this-will-be-a-homerun’ duet I can think of was Bing Crosby and David Bowie… Christmas carols no less!! I refused to use it.

  7. Love that your list is all over the place like mine! :) I was waiting on someone to do Stan.

  8. Love that you and Kristi both chose Whiskey Lullaby and that you included “STAN”. Great list!

  9. RCoyne RCoyne says:

Any room here for other types of duets?
How about Diana Krall and Christian McBride ( My Love Is ) Or Julian Bream and John Williams?
    John Coltrane and Miles Davis?
    Just sayin…there’s other stuff.

  10. HA to Scott not needing music to be romanced. Perfect way to further showcase the differences between the three! Also interesting to know that Roger likes “punch me in the gut with sadness and heartbreak” as a romancing song. I knew that dude was a freak. Re: number three. Hellz yes.
You know, I used to dismiss Lady Gaga as whatev, but I love that she did a song with Tony Bennet – her voice in this one is amazing (she also did one with Elton John for a kid’s movie called Gnomeo and Juliet – gained more respect for her then). Her voice is actually awesome.
PS thanks for the shout out. When you did actually go read it, were you right? Was I, once again, totally clark-like? :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Kristi

yes, of course and yes (and that’s a good thing). pretty impressive secondary aspect (your secondary is as it is with many I am meeting at this stage of the process strong secondary scottian aspect).

is Gaga a clark or what? lol I like her (again, sure the predominant is an Outsider and weird and self-effacing, but the secondary scottian aspect is a huge mitigating force) one more reason I laugh at the simplistic ‘introvert/extravert’ labels. To be aggressively shy! (I know that you can identify).

Yeah… Number three is one of my favorites. Dr John is clearly a roger and Rickylee is so a clark… it works…at least for songs. Relationships? thats like 2 Chapters at least in the Doctrine book… (the clark/roger couple: the power of negotiation and settling lol)

      • Clark,
yes, I agree that my secondary aspect is more Scottian than Rogerian, although, as we all do, I have my Rogerian moments. It’ll be interesting to see which my little boy ends up. Today, he has been a Scott, all the way. We’ll see though – he just turned four.
I love the term “aggressively shy” because YES I so get it.

        • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

          Kristi
(though we haven’t had the time to explore it, as it will merit) the Doctrine allows for a tertiary aspect. Will be very interesting as it’s influence on personality and behavior is better understood.
As far as Tucker… the current thinking is that we don’t get/pick/get-dropped-into our predominant worldview until about his age… but kids are so… malleable and seeing that it is tough enough to infer an adults worldview, much less a young person, i.e. <23 yo the exercise of 'inferring the other person's worldview' is imo a beneficial skill to practice.*

*Having said that, clarks almost instinctively try to do this with the people in our lives, the better to try and figure out 'the secret of the real people' lol

          • Considerer says:

Sometimes you write as though from my brain, y’know….

            • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

              Considerer

I agree… and think how cool this is, everyday with each person who comes here and reads this thing (and has the special qualities that are useful in approaching the current form of presentation of the Doctrine) and further asserts that (knowing the characteristics of the three worldviews) provides such insights!

damn! imagine how cool it will be as we develop the common language (for the 3)?

I totally appreciate your efforts with this thing.

          • Dude. First, you’re so right. Second, if I could unlock the mystery that is my little boy? Holy cow. Goldmine.
            Your comments make me happy.

When I was a kid, I played the piano. And once I dressed up like a chicken and another friend did, too. we played a duet to the song, “Chicken in the Straw” while a third friend also dressed up like a chicken and kept poking her head up from behind the piano. Yeah, I’m a complete dork. HAHAHA
