but uh-uh Honey, lay off of my shoes

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

A lot of work to do, not enough time to do it all. Quick Overview for you New Readers and then, to work.

The Wakefield Doctrine is a way to look at the behavior of people. We call it a theory of personality, but it is not really…more of a ‘set of perspectives’, a guide to figuring out what (the other) person is experiencing and therefore what they are likely to do next. Here at the Doctrine we say, you live in the world of a clark, a scott or a roger. We have the potential to ‘be’ any of the three, but for reasons not yet clear we all settle on one way in early childhood. (One of the most common questions we get here is: “Sometimes it seems like I am such a roger, other times I get mad and act like a scott. I guess this Doctrine doesn’t include me” To which we answer, “Yes, yes it does….clark.”) The basic idea here is that everyone eventually starts to see the world a certain way, as a pack animal/predator or perhaps a herd-based social person or even a blue monkey.
What this blog was created to do is to spread the word of the Wakefield Doctrine to as many people as possible. And we are doing this simply because we have found that when we tell people about the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers, they really seem to get a kick out it. Everyone who starts to look around them always see the rogers first, the scotts second and finally the clarks. And they always get strong rogers mixed up with distracted scotts, at least in the first couple of trys. But once they see the clarks and the scotts and the rogers, they can never look at the people in their world the same. Ever.

Like we said. Its fun!  And way more ‘predictive’ than any homespun theory of personality has any right to be…I mean a deviation of error of < .7% , yo. (Just messin with you, we have not measured the accuracy of predictive element to the Doctrine…but maybe someday we’ll get all chi-squared on this thing of ours.) So there you have the basics. But like I said, a lot of work to do today.

Hey! Progenitors!  DownSprings!!  Look what I found!!

Yeah, I know! A damn chart!  ( it’s meant to refer to something in our culture, not related to the Doctrine but still demonstrating characteristics…roger… ) ( …hey somebody go get glenn…there’s a DownSpring-shaped dust cloud in the seat at his computer at work!!…)

All we need to do is relax and let the blank spaces fill themselves in, I have total confidence that we can do this thing.

As you see, a lot of the spaces in the grid have something in them, but not all.  So what we need are suggestions so we can complete this grid and get on to the next one, which is the Female/Male grid  (hey! I had to start somewhere…the sooner we get this one filled in, the sooner we get the other one done.)

What!!? ( wtf….yeah you’re right….if we gonna be gender-neutral we gotta carry through on it…thanks a lot…DS#1… )

Here…from the “other axis”

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

OK. Include in the Female/Male grid the following:

scott/clark – Zooey Deschanel / Joseph Gordon Leavitt
I really like you. Today. Can’t guarantee tomorrow…..
    500 Days of Summer

BUT WAIT! Upon further consideration, this could actually be an example of a female roger/male clark relationship. Hm… the more I consider….
Maybe a comparative test. We know that Dana Scully is a roger to Fox Muldur’s clark. Comparing Zooey’s view of the world….doesn’t seem so different from that of Agent Scully’s.

    What say y…anybody?

….ok…we will put DS#1 down for ….the second ramification of the first premise…yo

As you see, while the two grids are from the male/female axis thingie…and while ‘it depends on which direction you are looking’… there will be different pairings for the two grids…
but hey I am willing to assign colors for the contributions…DS#1 can have blue..

  3. Downspring#1 says:

This exercise makes me realize that my memory cells have been disintegrating… my brain refuses to acknowledge/recall any current day movie(s) with apparent example(s) of such pairings.
So let’s go way, way back to decades past…..

Was Kyle Reese a clark or a roger? Give yourself a minute to think….
Was Sarah Connor a roger or a clark? Again, think about it…..

  4. Downspring#1 says:

Whew! Recovered something from this decade…..
Someone put Zack and Miri into that grid like thing up there.

interesting that there are no scott/scott examples in the grid. any movie that is based on good vs. evil will have 2 scotts. each tanaciously defending what they perceive to be their territory/belief/right/dominance. however, sometimes the means to the end may be surprising. initially they may not both appear to be scotts. this is due to their uncanny ability to get what they want either passively or aggressively. obviously, the aggressive scott is easily identified. the passive scotts tend to be female. (yeah, i know. is it possible for a scott, male or female, to actually be passive?) yes it is. and for a twist, how about 2 passive scotts?
the movie The Silence of the Lambs comes to mind. Clarice and Hannibal Lecter are most definitely both scotts. both are passive-aggressive in their attempts to unravel the other. a game of cat and mouse. and we all know how much scotts love to toy with mice. it’s a game. but eventually the goal is to end the game victoriously.

they (scotts) do show more, but the bad guy can be a roger or a clark. (There is a clip from the movie Wolf) that ran back a couple of months ago that does an excellent job illustrating a conflict (as much as there ever is one) between a scott and a roger (Jack Nickolson and James Spader). Very interesting.

While the basic tenet to the Doctrine, (that this thing is gender-neutral) is very much the case, there is a difference in how a scottian female will express (her) aggressive/predator drive as compared to a male scott who is inclined to, shall we say, tear up the place physically more than would his female counter-part.

Having said that I would submit that there is nothing passive to the behavior of the scottian female, but (in most cultures) as weapon of choice, sex/sexual-whatever is the first choice.

I would suggest you consider Lector/Starling in terms of scott/clark and see if the dynamics make more sense. (My standard approach to figuring out who is who is often to simply try them out and see which makes the most sense, i.e. scott/scott then scott/roger finally scott/clark
