Wednesday -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Regular Readers know that, of recent, we’ve divided up the week into posts by subject (or perhaps, more properly, of arenae of special interest): Monday through Wednesday the principles, application and good practice of the Wakefield Doctrine as an additional perspective on the world around us (and the people who make it up); Thursday (with option on Friday) Six Sentence Story(s); Friday open topic and Saturday the TToT.

(well, that certainly qualifies as ‘stem-winding’ although, if truth be told, a liberal application of italics would be in order. The history of the phrase is…)

Wait. A. Minute.

The history of the phrase, or, more properly the inference from the process of researching the etymology of it, is a good example of the differences between the three predominant worldviews!

attend:

Having spent twenty minutes on the internet looking up and otherwise trying to learn the origin of the phrase ‘stem-winding’ (or, ‘stemwinding’):

  • clarks (the Outsider) would ‘feel good’ in the acquistion of a new and hopefully accuate understanding of the phrase; the rub being: it does not quite conform to their understanding (of the phrase) prior to their inquiry; lets be charitable and simply do (on movies it’s kind of a trope to have a block-lettered stop appear, for us lets go with ‘CONFIRMATION BIAS’   lol*
  • scotts (the Predator)
  • rogers (the Herd Member)

jeez Louise! sometimes being gifted with insatiable curioisty is not such a good thing.

We went in search of an image of a Patek Phillip watch, (’cause they had a hand (arr arr) in the genesis of the expression ‘stemwinder’ and that lead to reading about the most expensive watches sold at auction and that, naturally lead to reading up on Duchenne muscular dystrophy which produced a side-trip of blessedly short duration to inquire about Gower’s sign and, finally back here.

damn! still gots to complete the one part of this terminally-prolonged post that relates to the Wakefield Doctrine (hint: bullet points)

*our confirmation bias in this case is a memory of the use of the phrase. it was in a description of an old-time politician standing behind a podium before a crowd and deliberately, if not ostentatiously, taking out a pocket watch and making a show of winding it, the effect on the crowd is the realization that the speech would go on and on**

** who just said, “So, you were right about the phrase!!”***

the least we can do is post some engaging, if not dated, music1

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

again i laughed…. the internet is a great place for searching … just so happens i did exactly that… two of the points/asterisks you used today for that very reason… where did this phrase originate and am using it correctly… now the watch.. mine was a wee bit different… i used the white rabbit… you know him, in the red coat claiming he was late and could not stop to chat with alice.. does this mean i am a clark!!?? of course, i am sliding into the wakefield understanding… confirming i am a valid person who has meaningful thoughts and can at times be absorbed into a crowd though it is very very difficult… i get that feeling another phrase coming on ‘as one door closes another opens’ …. it’s gray out listening to the pitter patter of rain falling .. geez another phrase… alice wake me when it’s over…. falling, falling… so appreciate the wakefield in my awakening ….ha!

      could very well be*

*one of the first rules: no one can (at least with any sanctioned authority) designate another as to their predominant worldview. the discovery process is half that fun!**

One insight (we use the eye exam metaphor a lot) is that since the personality types (of the Doctrine) is based on the relationship one maintains with the world around them. After getting familiar with common descriptions of each of the three (clarks consider the world and, if you want to be horrifyingly direct (lol) Life itself to be something that exists ‘out there’; scott are the leading source of excitement, fun and (possible) arrest and rogers know there is a Right Way to live and are driven to share it with nearly everyone) so, take these three perspective and look at the world today clark roger which is clearer now how about clark scott better>

      like-a that
ProTip: have fun with this thing of ours…you can’t get it wrong and you can’t break it

**stop us if you heard this already single question way to know another’s personality type, get a clark, a scott and a roger in a room.
ask each (separately) the following question:

How is much is 2 plus 2?

scott: most likely will laugh (good naturedly) and say something to the effect “You fuckin’ clarks, you crack me up!”
roger: (with the lack of hesitation that conveys disapproval) “4, of course. What else could it be?”
      clark: “…in what context?”

  2. No, it’s not such a good thing, lol. And! it happens so damn much – the one thing leads to another to another and, “what the hell time is it?!

  3. And now I’ve spent how much time enjoying this little corner of the blogoverse of yours?

The pocket and brooch watch are icons … not just for those on the polar face of Rogers, but for more practical reasons … like getting skin irritation from the constant abrasion of wearing a wrist watch. Of course, the cell phone has largely removed the necessity of wearing a time keeper. The luxury watch can still be a status symbol. A scott might use one as a bait.
