Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine- [a Rosetta and the Sophomore Six]

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

This is the Doctrine’s contribution to the Six Sentence Story bloghop.

Hosted by Denise, constrained by a sentence limit (high and low) of six, there are worse ways to spend the remaining time you have on earth.

Prompt word:

BRAND

“So did your little gangster friends tell you where we need to go to recover this… what did you call it again?”

“A Time Mechanism, more specifically, of course…”

of course,” even in their short time together, the Sophomore learned to limit himself to the italicized adverbial phrase, given his propensity for dressing irony up in sarcasm, very much on-brand for the young man.

“…Dr. Egmont’s Time Mechanism,” arching a single perfect eyebrow, which, in the semaphore of post-pubescent relationships, is the universal ‘Stop Danger’ signal, continued,  “Now, if you don’t mind I need to get organized.”

Rosetta Storme, sitting on the encircling ledge of the Bethesda Fountain, returned her attention to the contents of her purse while exhibiting all the self-consciousness of a teenage girl on the patio of her parent’s suburban home.

“Jesus Christ, is that a gun?!”

“Ethan, I think there are people over on 72nd Street in a tour bus that may not have heard you; stop staring and let’s get back to the hotel, we have an ambitious itinerary to plan and if you’re fortunate, you might get lucky.”

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Violet Lentz says:

I love that Rosetta took refuge in the only mobile place a woman has to hide- her purse! hehehehe

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

I liked the idea that she is so un-self-conscious (not that rummaging through the contents of one’s purse is anything to be embarrassed by)

  2. Chris Hall says:

Yes, of course she has a gun… always useful to have a beautiful big bag for that. (It’s a bit like me, I have a big bag, although I haven’t got a gun). Okay, on with the story now!

  3. She needs one of those purses made to hold a weapon out of sight, many of them are designed very nicely now, I’m sure she could find one which would suit her taste.

  4. mysteriam says:

…so where did they need to go to recover the time mechanism? surely not the hotel?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

no, at least not the one in NYC…

all we know* at this point is that it is in transit (but the Lady in Chicago, Anya Clarieaux seems to think she has the route in mind
if that seems un-necessarily vague, two words: Seat-of-the-Pants
      lol
      welcome to Sixville
You will see two other… storylines that are focused on Dr. Egmont’s Time Mechanism ‘the Order of Lilith Six’ and ‘an Ian Devereaux Six’
all three are part of a ‘Tales of the Six Sentence Café & Bistro’

now, the Six Sentence Café & Bistro!! there’s a place that’s interesting. You will, over time see references to it, over time, in Six Sentence Stories by Denise and Chris, Mimi and Nick and even Misky

      further information available upon request.

      • mysteriam says:

no kidding! I just noticed your other two posts, and it’s becoming more clear to me – thanks for the info (and stories)! such an involved plotline – fascinating. I”ll have to up my game a bit. : )

        • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

it will be interesting how the story develops, basically three storylines within the over-arching story (ala Maltese Falcon)

  5. Frank Hubeny says:

Nice interchange between Ethan and Rosetta. She always has the same carrot to offer to get him to do what she wants.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      …yeah, there is that*

*lol in his (Ethan/the Sophomore) defense, he is young**
**at least twice that we currently know about

  6. Misky says:

It goes without saying, although perhaps not your preference, so I’ll say it now, “Good heavens this is fun to read!” … I admire your method of scene layering.
The action-spine is tiny. The device: ‘there may be danger, they leave. that’s it.’ and everything else is texture — tone, social signalling, character dynamics, micro-gestures (eyebrow, purse, tone policing). As the reader, I’m moving sideways, not forward; I don’t follow the scene; I inhabit it.

I just love analysing stuff like this. What makes things work, and when they won’t work.

Anyway … Good heavens this is fun to read!

  7. Classic. Rosetta Storme wears her name well, like I just would not mess with a woman named Rosetta Storme, gun or no.
