Unicorn Challenge -the Wakefield Doctrine

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

This is the Doctrine’s contribution to the Unicorn Challenge bloghop.

A word-count constrained imagination contest hosted by jenne and ceayr, the prompt is an image and the only limit is ‘tell your story in under 250 words’

George Clinton faded into silence. His musical admonition notwithstanding, we had a job to do.

We were barely on a schedule and the owner of the storage facility, Joey Ungatz, made it clear that being late was not an option.

Standing on the roof of the row of matching lock-‘n-keeps, I had to shade my eyes.

It was high noon on the last day of the job, the blazing summer sun brought a roll of fives thick enough to choke a horse. My lead installer, Duncan Ghillie-Callum, already halfway undressed, broke into one of the all-time favorite karaoke-stripper songs, courtesy of Def Leppard.

God I hated student hires. They all had the physique for manual labor but, without exception, were crippled by the fact of being college students. Not that anyone was under the impression that the work would be an intellectual challenge. But the one that seemed to try the hardest, the first in and last out, got me to break the Nigel Rule.

I even wrote out the purchase order number, all he had to do is call the supplier and arrange for the delivery.

Now, a visual of the Stonehenge scene from ‘This is Spinal Tap’ eliminated all thought of strippers, hung-over roofers and disappointed mobsters. With the last delivery of roofing leaning, all waterslide/ski jump, against the last building my only thought was, ‘All we lack are dancing midget druids’.

I did the only reasonable thing and began to laugh.

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. That, made me smile.

  2. Misky says:

I’m with Denise on this – it made me laugh also.

  3. Chris Hall says:

    Well, that sounded… fun.
    Great song, by the way!

  4. ceayr says:

I don’t know who Nigel is/was, but this was a classic example of Ayr’s 3rd Rule: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and anything that cannot go wrong, will also go wrong.
And I smiled at ‘God I hated student hires.’

  5. You made the Nigel Rule for a reason…

    Good story!
