Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)
This is the TToT (Ten Things of Thankful). The creation of L. Lewis (no relation, we think, to CS Lewis)… but, if we had to try for some geneoconnectivity1 Lewis Carroll comes to mind much quicker.
Currently the host of this little weekly exercise in perspective and emotional relativism is Kristi. She has the un-enviable task of cat-herding what tends to be a fairly eclectic collection of writers, bloggers and rememberists.2
The ‘rules’ are quite simple. Write a post related to those people, places, things (real and imagined) that elicited the feeling of gratitude. Link it to Kristi’s blog. Read and enjoy (or sit back and say to yourself (’cause we all know, as much as we put ourselves into our blogs, our spouse/SO/bf manage to give the impression that they don’t understand what all the fuss is about. lol))
1) Phyllis
2) Una
3) the Wakefield Doctrine
4) Almira (hey! something new. almost done with 3rd edit. Before I go for the next re-write, I thought it might be fun and helpful to write short (and short-short) stories about the characters in the book. From other stages and phases of their lives. Gotta help in the next edit, since the more we know about our characters, the more real they become and the more real they are, the easier it is for them to tell us the story. Fer instance, betcha didn’t know that Hunk Dietrich grew up in Murphysboro, Illinois at the time of the Tri-State Tornado. Well, he did. Lost his entire family, he did. An uncle had a cousin who came from a little town in Kansas by the name of Circe and, well, the rest we’ll have to hear from Hunk.
5) the Gravity Challenge. The Graviteers voted and its onward and downward for 2019…. ‘the Year of (constructive) Non-Balance!’
6) Technology: I was able to record a very safety conscious* predator, not considered common to this part of New England.
7) hey! zoe wrote a post. go there, say ‘Hidy’
8) THIS SPACE AVAILABLE (Anyone in the sight of my words, if you’d like to participate in the TToT but feel a little shy, do not despair. While the ‘rules’ suggest 10 items, it is only that, a suggestion. You could post One Thing of Thankful. However, that is not realistic, as most people on their first venture on a bloghop titled ‘TEN’ Things of Thankful, would not be comfortable sending in a short list. Thanks for the idea, though…. have to think about that for next week. In any event, you got one Item you really like? Send it in as a comment and I will so post it here.
9) The Book of Secret Rules (aka the Secret Book of Rules)
10) Secret Rule 1.3 (which simply states, “Hey! Is there only one more item left to make Ten? Holy smoke, that means, I can post. That makes me feel….” cha ching!)
1) not a ‘real’ word
2) also not a real word, but should be…in fact, who besides me thinks that ‘the Rememberists’ would make an excellent title for a story?

Hey, I think Drexel understood Una, because he looked out the window while I was playing the video–at least long enough to see that there was not actually a coyote outside our house.
I was glad to see Zoe linking up, too!
I do not doubt that (there is that level of both self-awareness on the part of Una or in the informational quality in a bark. Heck, we both know our own dogs well enough to know what they are barking at by the sound, when they’re at the window and we’re not… the difference between, “Hey! thats a cat!”, “Hey! Look! A squirrel” and “Stranger!!!!!!”)
Yes, barks do convey different meanings. Drexel is odd, in that I have only heard him bark maybe 2-3 times in his entire life. The last time he did, he was under the table while we were eating dinner, and he let out one “woof.” I have no idea what that one meant, but it must have meant something, right?
Una barks when one of us leave the house. Not sure if its ‘Hey! Don’t leave!’ or is intended for any wildlife outside (its kinda loud), ‘Hey! Leave the human alone.’
Hey there! Awesome, grateful post as always. I’m grateful for the Doctrine, grateful for the awesomeness that is looking at different worldviews.
I’m grateful that I know – almost instantly – what worldview a person has not too long after meeting them. I say that because I have encountered two strong rogers in my day-to-day life. I’m doing my best to embrace my inner-Roger, too. Not always easy, but strive I will. :P
And kudos to Una who would defend her pack and surroundings from any intruders. Kinda cool to see new wildlife around, too. I always wonder where they’ll go and hide after being amongst the humans. Will they return from whence they came? Or go find a new home for the night? Or just run as fast as they can and figure it all out later? Hehe.
In any case, I hope you’re having a great weekend!
Totally agree. And, imo, I benefit from the ‘exercise’, whether I need to employ the insight the Doctrine provides or not. The effort of observing another person (or their behavior or their actions) through the lens of the Wakefield Doctrine is an act of allowing another perspective. The simple act of allowing a perspective, perforce*, weakens the grip of the more natural view of ‘this is the world, this, what I know is the truth about the world and the people and the only truth’.
Yeah, the newspaper says they’ve (coyotes) have been in the state for fifty years or so (lol. visual of a grayhound bus just crammed with them roaring through the border with Connecticut.) The thing is, in the nearly 30 years we’ve been here in this house, this is the first one we’ve seen.
Also the bear population down in our part of the state is increasing. I’m kinda hoping this is a sign their species are growing healthier.
*yes, I did type ‘perforce’, quite deliberately and not without a certain pleasure at a cool, albeit, somewhat archaic term.
His mother taught her/him well. Always look both ways :D I hope his original home is still intact and he simply took a wrong turn.
Good work on Almira! Cool idea, your short, shorts. I imagine Hunk and the others would have plenty to say that they weren’t able to say in the book :) “The stories they could tell” as they say lol
yeah, think I’ll start with Hunk Dietrich. (Weird thing is, while I’d swear I’ve written something about Hunk’s encounter with a tornado as a child, I can’t seem to find it. It actually is possible that its in my head as a memory due to how this story was written, i.e. scenes and characters playing in my head as I drive around during the day.)
No-o-o…I remember Hunk’s encounter with a tornado as a child! You can never find a passage or specific line when you deliberately want to lol. It’s there, probably in plain sight :D
(I’m pretty certain of this lol)
Very wise to write more about your characters and get to know them better. Una is a fabulous dog!
This is true… about Una, at any rate. lol
Still relying on good old 1.3 I see. Well I always say never underestimate 3.3 in the b o s r / s b o r which states unequivocally that if one is playing a video of a barking dog while said dog is watching a somewhat traffic wary predator then that person may pick up where he or she left off be it no greater than a full year but no less than 8 months, but if and only if a miniature poodle is encouraged by the previous dogs video barking to act like an utter maniac. It’s good to know the books still works!
Although it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole hell of a lot of dancing going on to use it anymore!
Total fan of the Book. (and who could impugn the authority of our four legged friends as they confer?)
Correct me if I’m wrong but it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of dancing going on to appease the 7 guard versions of the book any longer? Don’t tell me the virgins have been sullied or worse yet retired!
alas, the guards age… once fierce warriors become serene watchers, believing they’ve seen everything, see only what they have always known.
You tell them, Una! I imagine Una did some barking at that bull or steer too, although it appears to be inside a fence that isn’t going to fall down any too soon, from the size of those boulders.
That would be a good title for a story.
Speaking of stories, I love love that idea of writing short stories about each character, to reveal other parts that make up the story in its entirety. As you mentioned last week, I believe, I’d be happy to be one of your readers, just like I once did. I love that these characters have come alive to you Clark. That’s the fun of imaginary worlds that we write/create.
yeah… lets write something… ‘THe Rememberists’ or ‘the Rememberist’. sort of like a ‘sin eater’ only set in a dystopian future where people have whittled their subjective lives down to the here and now, a Buddhist dream gone way bad
So this week’s Six Sentence Story is less a story as the first scene in a short story…
the thing I enjoy the most about writing? so I knew Hunk Dietrich was a young man (early twenties-ish) but when I went wandering around twenty years before Almira takes place, what do I stumble upon but the Tri-State tornado! not that far from Kansas (actually Illinois)… seems like our farmhand survived the storm but lost his family… more to follow in the short story which I think I’ll link into the TToT this week.
