TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘..the beginnings of surely the most unstable of years…. two thousand nineteen?!!’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

A year passes, another approaches. As I trust I made clear in this week’s subtitle… the year that approaches has crazy, un-balanced, written all over it.

Nineteen?!! I guarantee no one has ever sat back in their wingback chairs, a fire throwing glowing orange shards of light against leather-towering bookcases and, looking at their companion said, “Why I concur, 1916 was most exciting, nearly as un-predictable as, say, 1958.” From a shadowy corner of the library, “Edsels ruled!”.

Guess what I’m trying to say is, when you look at the number 2019, when you type it out* when you see it in stationary stores… the number just plain looks un-balanced.

Not that those of us here at the Doctrine have a problem with ‘unbalanced’ lol  As clarks, we favor instability. Seeing how we are capable of believing anything, we necessarily shun the stable, un-changing view of the world and such.

But thats not for a couple of days.

Lets do something different for the last TToT of 2018 (see?! “Eighteen… you can count on me staying 18, well for as long as you’d like me to! Rest assured, I’ll be the same, ole reliable 18. yes, sir.”)

Thanks and gratation out to Kristi for keeping the light on this here bloghop here. It’s a dry-rock in an unpredictable river and we look forward to a bunch more of photos of Una and Phyllis and cryptic references to life, reality and path(s) with heart.

Thanks always to the Wakefield Doctrine for being the reason to wander into this funhouse of a virtual world.

1-10 (follow the link-blue path backwards in the time…. )

I was half a keystroke from deciding to hold this post until tomorrow… I thought to myself, I thought, Hey, get the most from the post, save it as a end-of-year thing.

Fortunately there remains a part of me, (the part very much in evidence when this blog was created), that said, in a reasonable, measured tone, “What the &)$*(*@&(*&$N are you saying?!!? Save it!?!? As in don’t interact with the external (albeit, virtual) world because…. it’s a chore!?@?!”

Fortunately Friend of the Doctrine, Cynthia stopped by the blog this afternoon. She didn’t say anything about how I needed to stop acting immortal and participate in the present. It was easier (and more of a gift than that)… by her presence, I was reminded of that which I know (but sometimes willfully forget)…. and so this post.

Thank you.

*Full Disclosure: I was about to type ‘write’

Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Six Sentence Story

Denise invites all in sight of this post to participate.

Any genre, form, style or construct of you and your imagination’s choosing.

…as long as it is six sentences in length.*

This week’s prompt word:

Sugar

“Theres a broad out front, something about being your client, or your ex-wife or some damn thing,” Lou, the owner of the Bottom of the Sea Strip Club and Lounge, nodded towards the Weybossett Street entrance, “want I should send your regrets?”

From my booth at the far end of the ‘quiet side’ of the club, I could see my client, Victoria Tudor-Prendergast, a temporary halo backlit her blond hair before the door shut behind her; to her credit, she turned more heads as she walked past the bar, than the twenty-three-year-old Olympic gymnast, hanging from the brass pole in the center of the main stage.

An impeccably-dressed black man appeared to her left, a badly-concealed weapon; nodding to Lou, he sat on a miraculously-vacant bar stool across from my booth; his name appeared, like the credits at the end of a 1980s movie, Robert Langford ‘head butler’ to the Prendergast family.

“I’m sorry, the Maidstone Club decided to table their plans for a Providence annex,” I smiled up at where I last saw my client, who, in a blur of couture, was now sitting opposite me, a packet of Domino Sugar pincered by fingernails that cost more to maintain than my mortgage and car payments.

“Mind if I join you?” Victoria did with clothing what the aroma of freshly-brewed coffee did for breakfast.

I smiled, because sometimes, you have to give up to get ahead.

-the Wakefield Doctrine-“Merry Christmas and/or ‘preferred culturo/religio/’recognized-by-major-Greeting-Card-Companies‘ Day (here)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

A reprint post for one of the Big Three holidays?!?!  Say it ain’t so.

but….but…. it’s from 2009! sorta.

And, re-gifting is an acceptable practice in many Doctrine homes. (Re-gifting motto: “If it was good enough to give once….”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

There is an old saying, ‘repetition is the most efficient form of creativity‘, to which we will add, ‘you can say that again’!

Given the enormity of the holiday, we would be remiss in our self-imposed duty to provide one more insight into human nature from the perspective of our little personality theory, if we did not tell you why Christmas is a holiday that resonates with all three personality types of the Wakefield Doctrine. But, due to the increasing influence of our rogerian aspect, let us first extend the heartfelt wishes of those of us here at the Doctrine, to those of you out there in Reader-ville:

To all of our Readers and Visitors:

Angola…Feliz Natal e (feriados felizes do específico da cultura)!
Australia..Merry Christmas and Happy (culture specific) Holidays!…on the barbe
Belgium…Vrolijke Kerstmis en Gelukkig (kweek specifiek) Vakanties!
Bosnia and Herzegovenia… Čestit Božić i Srećna (specifična kultura) praznici! (I hope!)
Brazil….Feliz Natal e (feriados felizes do específico da cultura)!

Ghana…Merry Christmas and Happy (culture specific) Holidays!…(!click!)
Greece…Καλά Χριστούγεννα και ευτυχισμένο (πολιτισμός συγκεκριμένες) διακοπές!

Slovenia…vesel Božič ter vesel ( kultura poseben ) dopust
Spain…¡Feliz Navidad y Feliz (cultiva específico) las Vacaciones!
Sweden…Munter Jul och lycklig (odla specifik) Helgdagar!
United Arab Emirates…عيد الميلاد قد وسعيد (ثقافة معينة (العطلة?! (dude!)
United Kingdom…Merry Christmas and Happy (culture specific) Holidays! pip! pip!
United States…Merry Christmas and Happy (culture specific) Holidays! y’all!
Zombieland….^(*&^%^,,brains!^(&*^*&^&!!

(Special Greeting Update! courtsey of our friend Melanie Chisnall over at Scribbles and Smiles )
South Africa…Geseende Kersfees!

Apologies to any whose (translated) Greeting comes out as “I hope the dog eats all your fish..” or something.  It’s the damn internet, I want to click once and get an accurate translation into any language in the world.  What’s un-reasonable about that?

The enormity of the Christmas holiday? It has clear appeal and, in fact, resonates strongly with all three personality types:

  • clarks: who love to give…selflessly, and to an extreme, we will give everything that we (think) we have to give, in the hopes of becoming so much a part of the group…which is, in fact all, of you ‘out there in the world’…that we will no longer consider ourselves the Outsiders
  • scotts: who love to give because there is so much life and activity inherent in a celebration such as is manifested by Christmas, that all they can do is run around and bark at the lights (or bark using lights), chase down and herd those who gather together on this holiday, never stopping, until without warning, they drop into a sleep, like a 2 month old puppy… wherever they last stood, eyes closed, teeth showing, legs twitching as the chase continues in their dream with the occasional wag of the tale, showing their essentially good natures
  • rogers: a tradition and the participation of nearly all people, Christmas has everything they could want and to top it all off, there is the second most feared manifestation of ‘referential authority’ there is:  the gift giver who keeps records, verifies those records and rewards and punishes behavior, all by standards that, while thought by most to be understood, are never explicitly stated.

So to all our friends (new and old), those of us here at the Wakefield Doctrine say, ‘Yo Ho Ho’!

…and… it’s got Lyle!

TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine- Holoday Edition

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clark, scotts and rogers)

Despite our temporary hiatus, the force of habit developed over five years or so is not to be ignored.

A normal person, confronting the tie-loosening, laid-backedness that is quite common in workplaces, classrooms and most public areas could be forgiven for suggesting, “It’s not an official Ten Things of Thankful bloghop so you can write anything you want, throw your hair to the wind, let your tie down… go crazy.” We would smile and, if in a somewhat charitable mood, reply, “What a great idea. Merry Christmas and yo ho ho!”

But lets get pictorial on this post.

Both Phyllis and Una are TToT Post emerita and surely need no introduction. Phyllis has a talent for the exercise of what is sometimes referred to as whimsical gratitude. Which is a good thing for me, especially at this time of year.

Example: we use a moderate amount of firewood, mostly for special effects. The wood stove has a glass door, more efficient than a fireplace, still attractive in the paleo-security sense. We have a guy for the wood. He’s a scott. His thing is that he kiln dries the wood. This has the effect of making for a fairly effortless fire. This is important because, as I’ve implied, we have a fire in the stove maybe twice a week during the season. In any event, the supply was approaching the replenish level at the end of last summer. Bob, our scottian fire chandler doesn’t like being predictable. So the way it works is, I call and say, ‘Hey Bob! I need a half a cord of kiln-dried wood.’ He says, “Yeah, why the *&$^ not? Don’t know when I can get there… real busy, ya know? Send me an email.” So I did. Last September.

In the meantime I finished constructing my firewood stack base thingie. The rectangle with beach rocks and sand contained by 4×4 lumber?  Looked kinda like a kitty litter box for giant, zen cats*. In any event I finished this week. Put a top layer of white marble chips (accidentally erased the photos…lol) and it was ready for Phyllis to stack wood.

No wood.

Yesterday, out of nearly nowhere, Bob showed up with the wood. Phyllis was out at the time. When she got home this is what she did:

Like I said, gratitude with a touch of whimsy.**

And, the stacking?

Mimi and Denise are, I believe, in TToT-mode more traditionally that we are here at the Doctrine. You should stop over at messymimi’s meanderings and GirlieontheEdge. tell ’em the Doctrine sent ya.

* photo:

** whimsy, (according to dictionary.com)

  1. an odd or fanciful notion.
  2. anything odd or fanciful; a product of playful or capricious fancy

Six Sentence Story -the Wakefield Doctrine-

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

Denise invites us to her Six Sentence Story bloghop.

Each week, she provides a prompt word and it is our task, if we so choose, to write a story, precisely six sentences in length. It can be any form or genre or whatever the cool, technical rhetorical term is for word-wrangling.

(And, you can use this to practice. I tend to do that, at least between writing scenes from various WIPs. This week’s Six is interesting in that regard. To borrow a line from Loki, “I am burdened with glorious purpose.” lol…. no, seriously!)

So I’m always captivated with how the wind manifests where we live, in the midst of a pine wood. The wind is every bit a living thing prowling in the distance. This week’s Six is the result of a windy morning. It is also a result of, as young clark, reading like a wolverine-on-Atkins, anything of a science fictiony nature. Now, back in the day, Ray Bradbury was included in that category, ‘though one might argue that he was more fantasy than science fiction. In any event, I read a short, short story of his, back in the day, that clearly lodged itself in the ‘properties department’ of the visualization lobe of my imagination. Could never remember the title.

Looked it up this morning. The book: October Country. The Wind is included in this collection. You should read it.

Anyway, here’s my Six.

Prompt word:

Sensitive

In the early morning dark, the chimes gave birth to a solitary note, like a village of the deaf, mute testimony to their sensitivity, as the new-born sound bled it’s music into the air. Inside the sleep-fogged house, an old-fashioned telephone, stirred from a fitful sleep, issued a single ‘you have a message’; like early-morning flatulence, too loud to ignore, too embarrassing to acknowledge.

The chimes shuddered, more in alarm than panic, as the approaching calamity dissolved their precise ratios as easily as an ocean wave eating a child’s sand castle. In the forest surrounding the house grew a sound, like traffic on a summer highway, the muted roar of a textile factory or the sound of rushing waters, more than eluding identification, it hid it’s location.

Newly-aware Man, discovering the night was not a burial between the setting and the rising of the sun, learned three sounds necessary for continuance: the rushshushing of water, the necrotic crackling of fire and the subtle susurrus or the screaming fury that accompanied the irresistible motion of the wind.

Focused on the sound outside his window, the man waited for nature to grant another day.
