Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)
This is the Doctrine’s contribution to the Unicorn Challenge bloghop.
Hosted by jenne and ceayr we are invited to find a story using an image provided each week. The only rule: no more than 250 words are to be used.
“They built it themselves?”
“Yes.”
“The 16th Century. Must of cost a fortune. I’m surprised the Church had the resources.”
“Well, you know, the organizational structure by then gotten pretty robust.”
“Seriously. Was what I’ve heard true, that the first iteration was dedicated to…”
“Don’t go there…”
“Santa Claus?? God! For reals? You are one twisted deity.”
“You should talk.”
“Anyway, I won’t bother asking where the money came from to fund this thing.”
“Ha ha.”
“How long did it take to build?”
“Which time?”
“What?” Sometimes I gotta say, I’m appalled. Your neediness astounds me.”
“Hey, not fair! I gave them Free Will. I didn’t say, Enslave yourself to a Church.”
“err… ‘on this Rock’ ring any bells?”
“Yeah, but that was just to get the ball rolling.’
“Gotta hand it to you, you make it too easy.”
“What?”
“Generations of lives, right? An unholy percentage of what little they can earn scratching a living from the earth, handed over every Sunday.”
“They wanted to… The art work alone is fricken’ priceless.”
“To show their love?”
“You gotta better reason? Hell, they were barely getting by living a step above the rest of the livestock I Created. ‘Man 1.0′ had a pretty sweet deal. That is, ’til you came along.”
“But, man! Literal centuries of human effort to build …and rebuild! a structure with one and only one primary use.”
“You planning to make a point any time soon, Morningstar?”
“Dude! And they call me the Great Deceiver?”
You take this research seriously, Clark.
And use it to good end – Santa Claus indeed!
A sharp challenge to God and a lambasting for churches, with a perfect final line.
that, in fact, is half the fun of your excellent bloghop… and, to no small degree, helps in the actual writing process, e.g. the Santa Claus reference
that last is a legacy of your cohort… a step not as rigorously enforced at my other ‘hop is the make it a story as in beginning middle and end, and despite how linear, a little twist at the end never hurts
I’m guessing you’re not a big fan of The Lady My God, dude.
Or does it self-identify as a man again this week?
Fun piece and cool dialogue.
lol true
and, I abhor cathedrals, not for any architectural or even scale or size thing, but the fact that they represent the true original sin: fear.
If I give money in your name and honor to the Nazi Party, does that make you a Nazi? If people choose to do things in the name and honor of a deity, does that mean the deity did it, or even approved?
I hope to not offend anyone.
One of my original rules when starting the blog was to leave the real world to others in this space. And, for the most part, the Wakefield Doctrine (and posts devoted to sharing the fun of it’s additional perspective on the world around us and the people who make it up, has eschewed current events and other everyday aspects of the ‘real’ world.
My interest writing in ‘fiction’ has been a direct result of my realizing I should improve my skills in the rhetoric and such.
Of late, though, I actually find myself wondering, ‘Damn if a New Reader stumbles by on a Thursday or Friday or Saturday are they going to scratch their heads. “So where’s this insight into the human condition?’
Thinking I probably need to find a way to separate the two. bloghops and such are fun, but not only is the Wakefield Doctrine the reason I’m here, it’s the reason I am who I am here. It’s a total proof of concept, proof of efficacy.
Ain’t no question which of the two writing activities I value more.
ya know?
No offense, and I should have added I actually liked the dialog and laughed.
Leave a link to the new digs, I don’t want to miss what you post.
more to follow on that… (since the previous long(ish) Reply I’m thinking maybe not so baby-bathwater but more landing page real estate… more to follow
… ok, the idea is there’s nothing that says every post has to get in line (current then below left, the previous posts)
I have three static sections (What is the Wakefield Doctrine / the Wakefield Doctrine Questionnaire / and the last one …Tell me Why’
I’m thinking, that the last, bottom one is kinda redundant or, at least unnecessarily contrived…
anyway if any thoughts, lemme know
You are certainly not one for mincing yout words, tell it like it is – dude!
thanks, Keith
Great fun story, Clark, and I have to admit you got me! I didn’t realize until 1/4 of the way through that the convo was between God and Lucifer. I’m usually much faster on the uptake. Dang!
my pleasure!
lol… fun (and risk) of untagged dialogue
Brilliant as usual. I have never stopped by and left unsated.
thank you, Miz L
