TToT -the Wakefield Doctrine- ‘…of superscript and other gimmicky gimmicks!’

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

20160123_083635_resized

Sometimes people, new to the Doctrine will say, ‘hey it’s clever and all, but all in just three groups and it’s kinda too hard to learn, never be practical.’ To which I say, ‘no, you’re totally wrong!’ thereby providing evidence of the efficacy of the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool of self developing oneself. A (relatively) short time ago, I might have responded to this fairly aggressive statement with something that began with, “yeah, but…” had a lot of third person pronouns in the middle and ended with, “you think?”

Below, in block quotes, is an example of the fun of the Doctrine at work. So after coming up with the subtitle, I decided I should check up on the etymology of the word ‘gimmick’, visited my usual sources, etymology.com and a few of the others. No surprises. Just as I was about to come back and get to work on the List, I spotted a listing for a site called ‘Wordwizard’ (it had a feather next to the title, which I think was supposed to be a quill) and a subtitle of ‘for lovers of the English language, switch accessibility mode on’ The site itself was more of a submit your thoughts on (the etymology of words) and the expert host would respond. But that’s not what stopped me and made me grateful for the Doctrine. The following exchange, clearly on the topic of the etymology of the word ‘gimmick’, at the top of the page was,

(Reader John) “I’ve run into “origin unknown” everywhere I’ve checked on the word “gimmick”. I thought it might have come from the early 20th century after General Motors Company used “GMC” as their company letters. Lot’s of new mechanical marvels were introduced at that time by car companies and I thought people might have generalized them gimmicks (GMCs).
Any other thoughts on the subject?”

(site Host) “John, GMC is a good stab at a folk etymology, but I’m afraid that there is enough known about the origin of the word to know that that one isn’t true.

My first thought, actually my second thought as I reacted to the person’s too-plainly illustrated predominant worldview, was, damn what a Doctrine!

Enough about the first 10 minutes of TToT Post writing. I am totally being a 15 year old with my profligate approach to the (unfortunately) finite day’s supply of words! I better settle down and get this done, as I need to get over to Findingninee to read and comment….( gratitude associates itself with the following):

1) Finish The Sentence Friday,  my very first bloghop and the place/activity/interaction where I met most of the ‘people’ I know today… at the time hosted by Stephanie Sprenger, Janine Huldie, Kate Hall and, starring   Kristi Campbell   as    Kristi Campbell   (and co-hostinae Alyssa

2) Six Sentence Story on Thursday, with zoe and them

3) the Gravity Challenge and all the Graviteers:  christine, val, lisa, kristi, sarah and… joy!    (ok… so think ‘Graviteers’, in place of Rocket Man and Rocket Women…. (lol, talk about a construct spinning out of control….)

4) Una  for reminding me each day to not worry about shit that hasn’t happened yet and, instead, to enjoy what’s going on around me, even the annoying things.

5) Phyllis for demonstrating that there is no upper age limit to finding and enjoying the wonder inherent in life, all too often left behind, once we leave (or are dragged, kicking and screaming out of) childhood and mature into adults… wonderment-challenged adults

6) speaking of serials (well, that was back in Item 3… the Rocket Man thing (my own re-edited memory of the past has the term Rocketeers, hence, Graviteers)…but the fact of the matter is that as a young clark, I often went to the movies on a Saturday afternoon and watched the serials that ran before the Feature films… and thereby acquired a sense-experience that has never left me, i.e. going into the theatre with friends on a bright, sunny and pleasant Saturday afternoon and, after the serial and 2 movies, coming out into early evening. …a momentary disorientation in time (and therefore, to my young clarklike mind, place, the world itself was distinctly different).

7) now, speaking of Serials.  Blogdominion  Chapter 15 is due on the stands this Sunday!  Last Week’s Chapter 14 was well received and, by all accounts, an enjoyable read. (Phyllis’s Comment/review-ette simply said, ‘Steamy‘  Do not fall too far behind! )
In Chapter 15: Sister Margaret Ryan attends the reading of Father Noonan’s Will, Detective Maribeth Hartley meets Ed Willoughby at his Office at Omni Corp and they are interrupted by a visit from none other than Diane Willoughby. Stephen Eddington leaves his grandmother’s to meet Anya for a glimpse into the future that she appears to be offering him and Tom Fearing is finding a wall solidifying behind him as he tries to deserve the wonderful life he has. Read all about it! (Remember Chapter 0 is the Prologue and that’s where you’ll meet almost all the characters.

8) the Wakefield Doctrine  (sine qua on, binyons, sine qua non)

9) vidchats, yo…. last night’s was what vidchats are meant to be! the regulars where there (including Kerry, who since the start of this year, has become very much one of the crowd on Friday Nights) and new person Abigail! (who seemed to enjoy herself and fit right in with the mutants that hang out at Café Jetson on Fridays)

10) SR 1.3

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

Comments

  1. Call me SNOWFRIST!

  2. Ah! The Saturday Matinee! I loved going to the movies with my best friend, getting dropped off by the parents. Yeah, dropped off at a movie theater at a young age to wander amidst the crowds all by our selfs and picked up at the appointed hour. Would parents today still do such a thing? lol

Nice post Clark. Sorry I had to bug out on the VidChat. I guess the increasing crowds crashed my computer. The audio went martian and robotic and everyone had frozen! Damn! We need a bigger venue for the Cafe Jetson :D Sorry I missed everyone :(

  3. Cynthia says:

    What’s S.R. 1.3?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      ahh! Execellento Questino*
S.R. 1.3 refers to Secret Rule 1.3 which states, in part, “…the completion of a List of 10 Items can be used as a[n] Item of that selfsame List. (subchapter 4.5 paragraph e ‘except only once in a list and, you should really save it for number 10) This citation is clearly quite authoritative as [w]itnessed the funny words and punctuation…”

the Book of Secret Rules (aka Secret Book of Rules) is a most elegant resource, wouldn’t you agree?

      :}

*see? I can learn Spanish too!

  4. ivywalker says:

#4 for sure. #6… in the periphery I recall sat. matinee at the Victory theater with Beeper Golden (my best bud)…nice. Thank goodness for people like #5 as well… makes going back to the Victory seem possible even if it has been torn down.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

yeah… the ‘what was real’ remains, somehow, somewhere within, and we can glimpse it only if we remember not to stare

  5. lrconsiderer says:

I’m glad for vidchats, for belonging, for determination and for seeing the world through different eyes, and for being able to apply the doctrine, from ANYWHERE, to a situation I’m about to enter (maybe) and on balance decided not to. BUT I was able to keep up with the scott, so that was good.

[context: I arrived home, pre-vidchat, to a party of 8 (two of whom belong here) – two scotts, three rogers, three clarks, and then me – would have been fascinating but I wasn’t invited and had to hide until they’d vacated the through-room (and dining room) so I could access the kitchen and cook [sub-context: they were in posh togs and I was tiggerised]]

  6. Ahhh…number 4…we all need Una in our life to remind us of this sometimes. I’m guilty as charged. Our minds have a way with running off with wild worries of things that have never even occurred and probably will never even occur — so yes cheers to the Una’s and the Shawn’s (that’s my husband) for keeping our feet in the present moments.
I’m glad that someone asked about #10…I didn’t know either :)
And yay for a successful video chat. No eating fritos by yourself this time!! Whoot!!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

you know, we’ve been talking about this concept for quite a while, the idea of working to change the way we are and you made me think about what was recently said that fits rather well in the example of Una as a illustration of the right way to live.
Simply knowing (that it’s not necessary to worry or be distracted) does not stop the thinking, but the fact of it (knowing, by example of Una) alters the impulse to act a certain way. For me, most of what goes on in my head is powerful, in part, because it’s totally un-contested. Allowing another view, especially one from a dog, I mean seriously, my inner voices certainly aren’t going to take that very seriously!
sort of like the opposite of worry, you know, how you’re going along and everything seems fine and then one little thing disturbs the flow and so on? knowing that Una lives life properly is that in reverse… it erodes the certainty that parts of my mind have always claimed

  7. Clark, glad that you are reflecting on the little moments this week. Sorry that I keep oversleeping and missing the vidchats! Will try to wake myself up next week!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

yeah… I keep forgetting that our Friday night is your Saturday morning! and, unfortunately we’re not getting any younger and so we have a tendency to end earlier in the evening than we used to

  8. valj2750 says:

I’m married to a perfectly interesting Clarkish Roger who suddenly became a Scott due to the influence of a pharmaceutical. What do you think of that?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

it’s an interesting scenario… remember, predominant worldview and then secondary and tertiary…. the best way to think of it is like, say you took Spanish in High School but every now and then, when your surfing the cable channels and you pass through TeleMundo you kinda pick up what they’re saying but if you try to deliberately speak the language it comes out mostly wrong.
The trick with secondary and tertiary aspects is that the predominant worldview is how the person relates themselves to the world around them… I am a clark with a (significant) secondary scottian aspect and a minor tertiary rogerian aspect.
I will do things like vid chats and take movies of myself….things that a clark would normally not do, at least, no enjoy doing… but though this behavior is in the realm of my scottian aspect, it is in service to my predominant aspect.

  9. A says:

I enjoyed myself at the vidchat very much! You were all so welcoming and then the Lisa debacle was just too funny! It was nice to crawl out of my little shell for once :) It’s also fun to put a face and voice to the words I read so often. Thanks for inviting me, Clark! And great thankfuls this week!

    • Oh how wonderful – we’re calling it the Lisa Debacle now! I think perhaps I like that… :D I just wish I had been able to return to chat more sans Kidzilla but alas when I returned the room was empty. Sigh.

      • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

my capacity to ‘stay up late…. it’s a Friday’ is receding at an alarming rate….!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      hey Abbie
glad you could join us… the vidchats are funny in a variety of ways… will try for next week…. the thing with Lisa’s connection made me think of the very early days of doing these things…. suffice say I always dress as formally below the waist now, as I do above the waist…. lol (nothing exotic, but I had my bathing suit on, thinking, ‘what the hell, this is all chest up, but Una barked or broke something and so I got up without thinking… lol I think I was wearing a tie, along with my dress shirt… silly fun

  10. Carin says:

    The 6-sentence-story sounds interesting.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

yeah! you should join us on Thursday! zoe/ivy posts it (there’s a link on her Uncharted blog) and it makes for some very interesting Posts…. challenging, yet fun

  11. We have a Graviteer theme song now? Awesome. First team shirts, now a song? We’re like…cool or something. I’ve been remiss in sending my numbers since this cold took hold. Hoping to be breathing easier and back on the bandwagon this week.
Una, Phyllis…those are beautiful items in your list. Finding moments of beauty and focusing on those is delightful. Looking at the world through fresh perspective is also a gift.
I quite love the vidchat – Friday nights don’t always work well timing-wise, though, as was evident once again this week. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to return after dinner/bedtime. I do hope to make it in this week.

  12. dyannedillon says:

Snow? You didn’t get snow? I thought everyone over thar got snow this weekend.
I have declared myself back on board and ready to keep up with the demands of the blogging world. Six Sentence Story, here I come! Also hoping to partake in the Friday Vid Chat.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

who said that? I wish it were true… but we did and so me and day-old bowl of spaghetti that is my back (from shoveling a 150 foot driveway) will amble off to work in a couple hours. lol
that’s great, you would have enjoyed my effort, this last Thursday
that’s also a good thing, have been sending the link to people via Facebook messaging, so be on the look out!

  13. Christine says:

I love #5. That Phyllis…I do believe we would get along well.
Glad to hear the vidchat was a success this week.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      I have no doubt, whatsoever

will send you invite for next one, whenever you can drop by, you are always welcome

  14. Kristi says:

I know at least one individual who really fits that “kicking and screaming out of childhood” line. Regardless of how one arrives at adulthood, though, being able to hold onto childhood wonderment is certainly a gift!

  15. herheadache says:

    Epic.
    :-)
Happy to be just one of the crowd now. Here’s to many more.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

yeah… we’re finally at the cool kids lunch table…. well, that kind of makes us the cool kids but, you’re right calling up a bunch of now-middle-aged people that I haven’t seen since high school, just to inform them that I’m at the table they never let me near…. lol

  16. Sarah says:

I had to go look up gimmick. It is a funny word. Most likely an anagram of magic? Did you know that? Such a very American spelling. And the response from the etymologist was what struck you? As Rogerian? Trying to keep up here.

Yes, Rocketman. That is me. As I work back towards the low 130s.

    • Sarah says:

Also kind of tickled by the quote on Online Etymology Dictionary. I’ve actually been to Muscatine on many occasions. But it’s not a place I see mentioned very frequently.
