I admit it. As the Music Director of My Skewed View I occasionally choose topics because I want to do them. Ha haha! Sorry, I crack myself up.

This week’s topic is: Make a mix of songs that are completely from a genre or style of music that you don’t usually listen to. You know… 5 songs that you love anyway… kinda like Clark pulling the Classical Music card for Best of. My original intent is for people to choose all 5 songs from one genre. But if that is too hard for you and you wanna be a baby about it don’t think you can do it, then mix-it-up, there will be demerits no repercussions.

I had a surprisingly difficult time this week. (Yeah, I know…again?) The thing of it is, other than yodeling, there are not any genre (of music) that I hate. From Classical to Country, Tibetan Throat-singing to nursery rhymes, my feelings are totally positive, ranging from ‘not minding’ to ‘totally loving’.  I must say, this has not always been the case. There was a time, back in the 70’s, there was music that I would not have been hesitant to tell you that ‘(fill in the blank) music sucks’.  However, at some point in the 80’s I decided that I needed to acquire a taste for all of the music that I hated. So I set out to listening and learning and (eventually) I found things that I liked about the music that sucked.  That being said, I realize that the intent of our co-hostini, Jen Kehl and Kristi Campbell is not to call on us to produce songs that ‘we feel we should hate but find that we like’, rather they are trying to trick us into discovering (and sharing) , songs that, while out of our ordinary listening habits, nevertheless is music that we enjoy.

I didn’t used to like bluegrass. I do now, (in small doses), and if I am given a choice, (as I am), and asked to cite examples of bluegrass-ish music, the following is what I enjoy.

So for the purposes of this week’s theme, I will say, I don’t often set out for an evening of listening to bluegrass music, I would pay to listen to the following:

Will the Circle Be Unbroken – Ralph Stanley

Old Blue – Eric Uglam & Sons

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Dream says:

I think I just realized what it is about Bluegrass that I’ve never liked, its the vocals, because I love the Flatt & Scruggs. Also, the Bohemian Rhapsody is hilarious.

      Dream

…actually I agree (on the aspect of the music that I initially hated, but now, simply don’t like most of the time)… the vocals on the first two I have ‘learned’ to enjoy, but I would never try to sing that way.

  2. Rich Rumple says:

Where in the hell did you come up with Hayseed Dixie???? I’ve heard all the rest of the Bluegrass artists you listed (Yeah, I visited the Country Music Hall Of Fame here In Kentucky one day to get the wife out of the house), but Hayseed Dixie is completely new to me! And, may I say without retaliation, I really didn’t expect Bluegrass out of you! lol Good job!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Rich

doncha love the internet? lol I don’t remember how I stumbled across these guys, but obviously they are not to be easily forgotten. as I alluded to in the Post, bluegrass is one of my ‘acquired’ tastes

  3. Slu says:

My Man… Before I even got to the Music, you gotta know I was having a good laugh. For your very first picture up there, I was thinking ‘cough drops.’ You crack me up!!! You Kicked Ass with this List. Dudes in their Hats, Coats, & Ties. Looking all kinds of spiffy. And to end it with a Bluegrass BR video… Outstanding!!! You nailed it, Slu

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Slu

hey, good to see you back on the beat! Hey, a suit and tie is normal attire for me, you think I should try to get away with the string tie thing? I believe I used to own one…wait a minute, I was 7 years old…lol

  4. Uh huh, would’ve guessed you’re not too into country! Great tunes.

  5. I had never heard that version of Queen. Kind of weird but in a way that broccoli is weird but still good for you.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

my reaction as well! I have found myself listening to the song quite a few time …”ain’t gonna let you go”

      lol

  6. Quickstepp says:

I know zilch about Blue Grass. This is an obvious blind spot in my music knowledge. Thanks for the switch up, though you did kinda stick to the country theme most of us seemed to go for.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Q
yeah, I get a kick out of that when that happens… the synchronicity of it all. I will admit to knowing near-zilch about bluegrass other than it doesn’t always involve a mouth harp or a wash board…lol

  7. I enjoy bluegrass, but don’t know much about it or listen to it on a regular basis. My neighborhood has a bluegrass festival every year though, and it’s always a blast and full of good tunes.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Natalie

..it (bluegrass) is my most recent of acquired tastes…and, actually the 1st two songs are among my favorites

  8. Jen says:

My dad played the banjo when I was growing up so I have a lot of bluegrass in my past, but haven’t listened in years. This was a nice little throw back. Don’t know how I feel about this Bohemian Rhapsody. I mean if it’s a parody I can take it. My sister is sitting next to me as I listen and she’s just giggling.
And your right my intent was not genres you don’t like, just genres that aren’t your everyday music. Maybe it was problem because we listen to music constantly here. And I was kind of lying even there because I listen to Latin Jazz at least once a week…
Anyway I can’t think with this song playing! Do you really listen to it? My brain is going to explode now.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Jen

It is (a parody) ’cause they do a whole bunch of other songs. Despite (or maybe because of) it being parody, I get something from listening…the bluegrassedness comes through in a way that I can compare (in my head) the genres, as the song is playing. “…ain’t gonna let cha go”

hey, Jen. the title round here is Twisted MixTape non? lol

  9. I’m not a huge fan of bluegrass either but you chose some good ones. I think my favorite is Bohemian Rhapsody but I’m not sure if that’s just because it’s more familiar to me (at least I know the words and tune) or if it’s the best one on your list.

  10. phyllis says:

I do love Bluegrass. But, that is not a surprise; I love PBS and any special where the musicians are long since deceased.
(I saw Flatt & Scruggs in concert in the mid 1970s at the Goodspeed Opera House :))

  11. I like that perspective Clark. Things you like about the music that sucked. Well, for my money, when you’re talking bluegrass, it doesn’t get much better than Bill Monroe, so that’s a good pick. Country seems to be a Mix Tape undercurrent this week. I like that. ;)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      Linda

yeah, I was struck by that as well…almost as if the least appreciated genre had enough appeal (on some level) to allow it to force it’s own way onto multiple lists. damn!

  12. Louise says:

Don’t think I’m a Bluegrass fan, but I enjoyed this. And I’m currently listening Hayseed Dixie doing Gin and Juice – courtesy of YouTube – so you’ve introduced me to that. So thanks! I enjoyed the Bohemian Rhapsody cover/parody as well. I think I just like when people take a song and play it completely differently and it still works. Remember a guy from university at parties with a guitar who use to do that – always fun.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

yeah…the fun of this here bloghop here, is getting a different… perspective. This, of course, is a concept near and dear to our hearts here at the Wakefield Doctrine. Understanding people, like appreciating music is all about perspective, not a matter of discovering any new and/or unknown fact or information, rather just looking at things (and people and behavior) from different…perspectives. ya know?
