TMT Tuesday #26 … the Wakefield Doctrine (“…incense and mind-altering substances not required, but surely wouldn’t hurt.”)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

mixtape jenkehl

The rules of Twisted MixTape are as such: Try and create a 5 song mix based on this week’s theme. This week our theme is Groove.  Make a 5 song playlist of anything that makes you sit back, groove and relax!

Take it easy, make it flow, remember in your mind you are creating your mixtape for a friend, what would he want to hear?

Relaxing slow jams. You wanna chill, you want your friends to chill. Any genre from rock to jazz to hip-hop, but it’s gotta be slow-jams

Our host, Jen Kehl and Kristi (no last name required, either you know who she is or, well …you can always dream) are quite explicit in their instructions this week.

The thing I enjoy (or abhor) about TMT Tuesday is that, for me, the process of coming up with a MT results in some serious retrospective shit. I read everyone else’s Posts and I get the sense of people musically grounded, active in their exploration of new styles (of music) and an at-the-fingertips access to the incredible variety of musical genres.  In my case, not so much.

Take this week’s theme. The idea of ‘slow grooves’ and ‘chillin out’ and such, forces me to look within and remember when last I felt like… ‘SLs and COs’.  And therein lies the problem. I like the music listed below but, as implied by Jen and Kristi’s instructions, it is music associated with a certain…mood, pace  whatever the word is for, ‘hey, I got an hour, don’t need to be anywhere but I don’t want to sleep… what can I listen to?’ Ya know?
The thing of it is, when I go rummaging through my memory for the last time I did just that, I find myself in the 1980s (or worse, the 1970s)! Damn! It surely would appear that I have not chilled out in a very, very long time.
Very enlightening. Semi-depressing. Tuesday as usual.

Today, as you will see, I am including entire albums as well as single tracks… the advantage of ‘the youtube’ is that you are able to push the slider along to sample different tracks on a given album. Where I have included a ‘full album’ you should find that each track goes to the next with a naturalness that makes it clear that the artist intended their music to he heard as a whole.
Having said that, I am starting with a ‘single’, from Electric Ladyland, the lyrics say it all.

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Linda Roy says:

Dave Brubeck! Nice choice Clark. I dig the Gregorian chants – I really do. Jimi, oh and Chic Corea…you always come up with really unique, interesting mixes that I really get into!

Yeah… while I get the idea with the chillin I came up against the fact that, for me, there are different ‘forms’ of chillin the Mahavishnu and RTF is an example of the music as a whole (in terms of an album) as opposed to a single song…which, of course Mr. Hendrix and Mr. Brubeck demonstrate quite well.

  2. Clark, apparently our favorite reverends were jamming long before our time! I do love Gregorian Chants. So peaceful. Have a great rest of the week!

  3. I find it highly depressing that I, too, haven’t chilled out to music in way too many years. Excellent additions to the chillin’ out today, Clark. I love the Gregorian Chants. Haunting, beautiful and amazing.

yeah, hearing that does help…. I can’t tell you when the last time I sat around with friends (in this week’s prescribed manner) and just listened to music. But thank god for ‘full album’ on ‘the youtube’… which is why I included the ones that I will click and minimize while I sit at the computer… (the friends and the incense and such? …waiting for the app for that).

  4. And hahah to me not needing a last name. I think I like that.

  5. Slu says:

Duuuuuuude… Ha!!! Home for a quick lunch. Sadly, I do not have 2 1/2 hours to ‘chill’ on this one. That said:

You gotta know I’m diggin’ Chick Corea. Dave B as well. And my Son, Shane, would be ‘Cheering’ your selection of Barry White. Well Done!!!

I have to laugh… It’s always like Christmas Morning at the WD: You wake up & you think you have it all figured out, know what you’re going to get, etc. Then, you unwrap your gift’s and Boooooooyah!!! Total surprise… Nice, Slu

lol thanks man (this particular hop is tough cause I am work most of the day…now with my ‘other two bloghops’ I can sneak in some post reading… not so much on the TMT lol ) Will be catching up later in the day… I did see Jeff Beck on yours (as I was passing through) I debated ‘Wired’ as a full album selection… love the choice.

  6. Jen says:

Oh such a great idea! The whole album thing! I think I would have included Tangerine Dream – Underwater Sunlight. Back in the dark days I used to have really bad insomnia, it was the only thing I could sleep too. Sadly I owned it on a cassette that was worn to the bone, cause I’m thinking I might like to listen tonight.
Thank you, as always, for wracking your brain just for us!

  7. Well that’s a nice little package isn’t it? Jimi to Chick, to the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Dave (how did I not have Take 5 on my list) and ending with Barry. Slightly odd and some kind of wonderful.

      Kath

how could the evening not end up being everything you could hope for, with a play list like this? (smiles)

  8. Dude. Gregorian chants. Awesome.

  9. curiosa kat says:

I really enjoyed The Mahavishnu Orchestra album you shared. I now have a new music I can play while working.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

It is truly one of the great albums of the 70s (courtesy of John McLaughlin and them, of course… the para-generous tentacle of ‘the youtube’)
