A lot of ground to cover…so lets get right to it!

“When the tale begins, a mother duck’s eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the other birds and animals on the farm as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse from them. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he sets off on his own. He sees a flock of migrating wild swans; he is delighted and excited but he cannot join them for he is too young and cannot fly. Winter arrives. A farmer finds and carries the freezing little bird home, but the foundling is frightened by the farmer’s noisy children and flees the house. He spends a miserable winter alone in the outdoors mostly hiding in a cave on the lake that partly freezes over. When spring arrives a flock of swans descends on the now thawing lake. The ugly duckling, now having fully grown and matured cannot endure a life of solitude and hardship any more and decides to throw himself at the flock of swans deciding that it is better to be killed by such beautiful birds than to live a life of ugliness and misery. He is shocked when the swans welcome and accept him, only to realize by looking at his reflection in the water that he has grown into one of them. The flock takes to the air and the ugly duckling spreads his beautiful large wings and takes flight with the rest of his new family”   (Wikipedia)

So how do we use this very, very well-known fable to illustrate some aspect (or larger principle) of the Wakefield Doctrine?

Most Readers (and virtually any scotts wandering by at the moment), will be expecting us to get all smart-ass and funny with this Fairy Tale. (The rogers, on the other hand, are holding back, not quite lurking, but for all of the seemingly interested and supportive regard for us, there is a very real risk of their ‘lashing out’.)

(Hey!!  Tee Shirt Contest!!  one free docTee to the first Reader who can correctly describe how a roger is likely to respond to a clark liking this tale of Outsider-ness*)

But you know? I’m thinking that this Fable does not comprise an overly distorted view of reality (aka as a worldview).

Yes, of course we have a Video Post!

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Considerer says:

    Oh goody – I shall pretend I am an ‘advanced’ downspring and therefore not have to try to understand a Roger…

    YAY for videoconferencing (thanks Cyndi) – we’ll make a go of this yet.

    “and clarks with….clark-stuff” We’re just a mess, I guess!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Considerer

      the rogerian worldview for (a clark) to understand/appreciate/’be in’ is the more challenging of the ‘other two’. scotts are easy, disconnect the censor/superego/maturity-center and run out the metaphorical door (HEY!!!) roger not (as) simple.

      We talk about understanding the three worldviews using the term ‘fluency’. This seems to be the most productive approach, the many levels of acquiring another language corresponds to what we are attempting here. So we begin with the general and work our way to the indvidual. So we’re walking down the streets of Soho in the rain* and a 2 people pass by on the sidewalk and we catch a fragment of the conversation. Most people can guess the language another is speaking, even without having to understand the language.
      The next step up is acquiring the vocabulary. Learning what indivdual words meaning (in correspondance to) your native language. Then grammar and finally you are able to converse with the person from another country.
      Ultimately in the continuum of fluency, you begin to think in the language.
      like that

      (docTees are almost ready! that will be fun)

      *Warren Zevon…lol

  2. As a roger-clark, I’d say the Rogerian world view is quite hard to appreciate too. Sometimes, I don’t even understand it myself. I believe what would make world views of either of the 3 hard to comprehend sometimes is the fact that all of us would be blends, affected by influences everywhere! Thanks for sharing, Clark!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Michelle

      Agree completely! Your situation is illustrative of a couple of things. Were a roger (your predominant worldview is that of the Herd Member), with no significant secondary or tertiary aspects, you would not have any particular interest in something like the Wakefield Doctrine, if for no other reason that it (the Doctrine) advocates a certain relativism that is so not consistent with the rogerian worldview*. But you do enjoy this little personality theory, and you do ‘get’ the Wakefield Doctrine. So..how to account for that? That would be your secondary aspect, which is surely your clarklike aspect** Of our Readers, Friends and DownSprings it can be said, if you are not a clark(predominant) then you have a significant secondary clarklike aspect***

      I am very glad you are here. Having a roger who understands the Doctrine is invaluable to our efforts to understand/appreciate the reality/worldview of your people (…which includes, of course, Friend of the Doctrine Janine)
      Keep the observations, questions and insights coming, please!

      *which, among other things is a world in which there is a quantifiable quality to the world, and is, in a non-political sense, totally conservative… that which was trumps that which might be consistency is king, in the world of a roger
      ** Readers are reminded, we are born with the capability of experiencing the world in one of three ways, we make one of these (three worldviews) our predominant worldviews, our personal realities but never lose the capacity to experience the world as ‘the other two’
      *** one of the reasons for this to be a valid statement is that my writing skills at present, have not developed sufficiently to be capable of shaping the message such that it is easily understood by those without the intellectual flexibility and confidence that is part of the clarklike worldview (predominant or secondary)

  3. Hmmm…I think I need to do another video blog. Seriously. Because I haven’t done one since November and just hearing about video calls and such in your blog makes me all nervous. How silly! LOL. :) Thanks for the drive along this morning…very interesting as always. Have a super Thursday!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melanie

      Hey!! I’m really glad you Commented! (as you know) I’m working with Considerer on understanding the google+ hangout (thanks to our friend Cyndi, for the suggestion) in order to make the Wakefield Doctrine Saturday Night Drive accessible to you guys what live far away (in space and time). If you care to share what you know about getting people into the Doctrine circle and in that way connecting on what appears to be a video conference call…please let us know. (remind me to mention the very odd effect that a clark feels on one of these live vid things…)

  4. Kerri says:

    I’m so a Scott waiting for the sarcasm!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kerri

      clarks? sarcasm?? never! we loves our scotts.

      lol

      actually, we totally welcome our scottian Friends of the Doctrine…in fact, if you take a stab at the question posed in the Post. We totally would send you a (nearly free) Wakefield Doctrine docTee!

  5. Considerer says:

    See now, I don’t think I’d EVER do a video blog, but a temporary chat, I am happy with. I don’t want anything left behind for me to look back at and go “What was I thinking” – the chat is a far easier thought to manage.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Considerer

      I like the video ’cause hopefully they allow me to provide ‘extra’… something, nuance, attitude, emotion( yeah, a clark emotional on tape right…lol) But I totally like (after the first one) the video chat…realtime has so much more flexibility… looking forward to seeing what this medium has to offer.

      (Let’s remember to tell the others the videtiquette that we seem to be learn rather rapidly lol)

  6. Considerer says:

    As you said – we will succeed. It’s going well, if only you can get it on your phone…

    I liked the nuance.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Considerer

      In any event, we are breaking new ground for the Doctrine… (of course, as clarks we are only genuinely comfortable in ‘new’ ground)

  7. Katia says:

    How a Roger will respond to a Clark’s liking of this tale of outsiderdom. Hmmmm. I imagine it to go something like this:

    Roger: Snap out of it!
    Clark: doesn’t hear Roger, because he’s continuing to contemplate the complexity of the story and how it relates to own life.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Katia

      I will allow that… (the only mod I would suggest is add a hint of intentionality to how the roger attempts this maneuver and allow for a degree of ‘wanting-the-roger-to-approve-to-the-point-of-taking-the-roger’s-critcism-too-much-to heart)

      All in all that is a docTee worthy answer! Ladies and Readers, lets hear it for Katia!… a soon-be-stared-at-future-wearer-of-an-Official-Wakefield Doctrine- docTee!

  8. As a Scott, I think a Roger would say, “Well, you would say that’s how the story turned out.”
    But I’m still working out the kinks of my understanding.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melissa

      lol (I totally concur) I will be in touch… if wearing a genuine and authorized Wakefield Doctrine docTee is viewed by you as a good thing!
