Finish the Sentence Friday the Wakefield Doctrine goes to the damn movies! (yes, you know what scotts want to see! clarks? reluctantly go along…rogers begrudgingly concede)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers)

My favorite movie of all time is…

‘Slacker’    by Richard Linklater   (Writer, Director, Producer and in the opening scene!)

My reason for picking this movie is related to the Wakefield Doctrine.

(By now) everyone knows that the Wakefield Doctrine proposes that there are 3 personality types: clarks, scotts and rogers. (Actually, the Doctrine says that there are three ‘characteristic’ worldviews (or ‘personal realities’) and it’s simply growing up and living in these ‘realities’, that results in what people call personality types. Growing up and experiencing the world of the Outsider? you got your clark. Live your entire life as a Predator in the harsh reality of prey and predator?  hey! scott and if you have spent every day of your life since age 5 or so in the connected, sensible, orderly reality of the Herd Member then you can add you name to the roger… register.
OK, you all understand the basics…(oh yeah! don’t forget!  even though you are predominately one of these three, you have the potential of the other two, what we call secondary and tertiary aspects.)

The Wakefield Doctrine is also a useful tool for self-development. We don’t have time here to go into a long explanation, suffice it to say, when it comes to self-improving yourself, we say: look to your secondary and tertiary aspects… you already know how to do the stuff you know  can’t do.

Richard Linklater is a clark. The first scene of the movie makes that totally crystalline. Fine.  He is also a successful movie maker. He has some mad secondary and tertiary aspects, ya know?

btw… wondering if someone is a clark or a scott or a roger?  not sure, tried all the standard tests,  still not locked in?
Try this: arrange for a rental of ‘Slacker’. Sit down with your candidate. If they are a clark they will watch the movie with you (with occasional laughter of recognition)…if they are a roger, they will be out of their seats in less than 4 minutes. Guaranteed.

…and the bloggarini  sitting up in the balcony and all  Janine and Kate and Stephanie and Dawn  are to be thanked and visited (and just go ahead and sign up to follow their blogs, you will not regret it)

Bonus Feature!  Best Music associated with a movie?  from the Matrix

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. I have actually never seen Slacker and not sure why because I loved his other movie Dazed and Confused so very much. I truly may need to check this one out now and thank you for the suggestion. And as always thanks for linking up with us and have a great weekend now, too!! :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Janine

      ‘take notes’ by that I mean, it will be interesting if your secondary clarklike aspect will trump a predominant rogerian aspect… in this case sitting through ‘Slacker’. My wife Phyllis, (a roger ‘of the first water’) loves ‘Dazed and Confused’ but could not last more than 4 minutes on ‘Slacker’ let us know how you make out!

  2. Amy says:

    I haven’t seen this movie either! It’s on my list for weekend viewing. :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Amy

      (in my regarded opinion…) you will enjoy it no one else in the house will (except if you have a clarklike daughter ‘hiding in the family’ ) lol

  3. Cyndi says:

    Slacker? Haven’t seen it. But something tells me I should. :P
    I am digging the Matrix music as I type.
    I love those movies that probe your mind. I should watch the Matrix again, lol.
    :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cyndi – I personally guarantee you will enjoy Slacker (back in the days of video rentals, I used to offer a money back guarantee to clarks about this movie*)
      Hey, will you be around tomorrow night?

      *roger-phobic movie

  4. dawn says:

    I am a huge Matrix fan. I loved it. Now, isn’t it funny how I don’t really care for those new “in the future this is what’s going to happen” movies? I think Reeves is what did it for me…or Fishburne.

    Thanks for linking up with #FTSF this week. Hope to see you next week!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Dawn – So, … dystopia is ok as long as they pretty. lol Be sure to try Slacker.

      Thanks(and the other bloggerini*)for the excuse to get out and visit today.

      *Hey, Considerer!! is spelling ( ‘bloggerini’ ok? )**

      ** DownSpring Considerer gets co-creator credits on the term (yeah, like 1,000 people haven’t used it way before now… lol)

  5. Cyndi says:

    Hmm…not sure. A friend of mine is on Wheel of Fortune tomorrow evening and we’re having a big pizza party celebration in his honor (if you watch, his name is Dusty). It’s earlier in the evening, but…perhaps I’ll call when I’m driving home. :) Sorta depends on how wild and raucous we get. Hahaha.

    **roger-phobic movie? I’m ALL for that. ;)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      …on the Wheel?? damn…v cool

      yeah… you ever sitting around with a bunch of rogers who won’t go home, just put Slacker up there and your couch will look like those old Wiley Coyote Warner Bros cartoon… human shape dust clouds settling into the upholstery

  6. Hi, I have to admit I’ve never seen this movie. I don’t watch movies much, but I’m thinking I’ll have to look this one up. If I can find it in this far away country, that is! Enjoyed the post, as usual! so have a good weekend. See you soon!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Joan

      I will be interested in hearing your reaction to the movie… the good part is that, for those who can’t stand the movie, i.e. rogers, it becomes abundantly apparent in the first 5 minutes… no need to endure 90 minutes of something that you will say, ‘&*^? was that?

  7. Slacker is a good one. I have the book and I just came across it last week and was thumbing through it. I always railed against the “veal feeding pen”. ;)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @MM BI Dom

      …like some songs, I knew I liked this movie from the opening scene. (which btw the passenger in the cab is the Director/Writer/Producer…his own damnself)

  8. Have to admit that I’ve not seen this one yet! Movie fodder for me. And I’ll be able to watch my husband’s reaction to see if he’s a Scott, Clark or Roger!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Michelle

      as we might be thinking that you are predominately rogerian… if you would try to sit through more than 5 minutes…lol (although, if you like it even a little… you might find yourself in the clark club!)
      …oh! yeah! am talking to printer for new set of docTees! there is a slight design change that I am trying, look forward to everyone’s reaction.

  9. Katia says:

    So there’s finally a safe proof way for me to determine which category I belong to, another reason to watch the movie then!

  10. OK, I haven’t seen Slacker either. That likely does not shock you. My best guess is that I might react in a rogerian way and leave after 4 minutes…would that make you think less of me? I was, however, very grateful for the parting Matrix clip. And yes, most excellent movie music.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Stephanie

      no!! (come on, lady you wanna get me in trouble with the roger’s Union?*) lol Actually I appreciate your Comment, because over time I will range from being very kind to being very mean (or so it may read) to the rogers and the scotts… literary licence** But I suspect you might enjoy the movie but maybe in small doses. Let us know!

      *no, don’t get the visual from the Wizard of Oz… “weee welcome you to the Lollipop League, the lollipop league….”
      ** see? how I spelled it? now thats‘ literary

  11. Slacker! I remember this movie. And yes, a clark’s clark of a movie. When I brought Slacker home from the video store (that long ago lol) my rogerian other half did not even last for 5 minutes! To this day, he will still refer to this movie in that special way rogers have when they want to, shall I say, dis clarklike things:) And yet… and yet! he loved Dazed and Confused (another Richard Linklater film.)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Denise

      Yeah, I think they (rogers) are responding to the music when they like Dazed and Confused.

  12. Wow, Clark!! First, I am SO UBER impressed that you used Rage Against the Machine in your post. Makes me feel like you are less of an Outsider than I’d have imagined. Actually, wait. That’s not fair. Because as a semi-Clark, semi-Scott my life as well, of course I dug the awesome music. Sorry. I was going to delete the above but realized that it may make you happy that you’ve got me thinking about my Clark and Scott sides so much. Roger, I don’t really relate to as much. I hope that’s okay. And you know what? I’ve never seen Slacker. Guess it’s time, if you recommend it.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kristi

      thank you… yes, you should find (it’s downloadable) Slacker and watch it. If you do not smile (in ‘recognition’) before the opening scene involving the cab ride ends, you can stop and not watch the rest.
      hey, I’m getting a new batch of docTees made making a mod to the design (see the ‘Fashion Center’ here at the Doctrine) for what they look like. The mod is to have clark (or) scott (or) roger on the left shoulder (appropriate to the wearer’s predominant worldview, of course!)
      You are on track with the idea of not being only clarklike, most of the Friends (of the Doctrine) and DownSprings have significant secondary aspects! The Considerer is a good DownSpring to look to for how to go about determining (your) secondary aspect…

  13. Jen says:

    hmmm….I never had the desire to see Slacker. Is it like Clerks? Because I loved Clerks. I guess I can watch it. I will have lots of time in SOUTH CAROLINA for movie watching. It’s on my list.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jen

      Interesting that you compare it to Clerks… Linklater is one of the four Writer/Producer/Director(s) that I have always thought of as forming the core of the independent film movement of the ’90s (the other 3 being, Tarentino, Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith (Clerks)). Of the four it would seem that Linklater garnered the least of the commercial success, though became more and more accessible with successive films.

  14. So I’m a clark and the hubs is a roger. Huh. Some stuff makes a little more sense now. Love Slacker. Love Austin. Love Dazed and Confused. And Before Sunrise. maybe I should have a Linklater movie marathon weekend.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melissa

      I have similar demographic, wife could not tolerate Slacker but totally loved Dazed

  15. … and another movie added to the LoveFilm queue. Why don’t I know most movies people talk about?? Things to ponder about..

  16. What a great FTSF this week. I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s favorite movie list(s). And being reminded of all the excellent films (that came out of the 90’s.)

    Who doesn’t like RATM?!

    We’ve established that Slacker is the movie to clear a room of rogers. LOL I would submit that The Matrix is another of those movies. rogers (at least mine), do not seem to care for movies that appear too..hm…far fetched. Realism is more to their taste (historical stuff), or films smacking of justice for the wronged (true crime or crime type). Don’t get me going on “space” movies. If left alone to pick, a roger will not choose one of those to save their life. LOL
    It’s funny. There have been many a film I (a clark) have brought home that, after some resistance to my choice, my roger has admitted to enjoying. But not first without letting me know that when I picked it out he had tremendous doubts:D

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Denise

      “…a film I (a clark) have…, after some resistance to my choice, …roger has admitted to enjoying. …not first without letting me know that… he had tremendous doubts”

      Lets try to dissect that: you offer a gift you offer to enhance his experience (being of the herd)…he must contest the implied dominance* with a challenge to your *authority* to judge the value of a thing…once denigrated, he then may assert value (on the basis of) his own Authority.

      *after all, the concept of ’empowering another person’ is at it’s heart a syllogistic fallacy

  17. ” *after all, the concept of ‘empowering another person’ is at it’s heart a syllogistic fallacy”

    Yes, I suppose it is. And not just for the rogers. LOL

    As always, your recapitulation of sentences that were made, help to solidify the veracity of the Doctrine.

  18. …and another thing….lol
    I’m convinced now that a pretty solid indicator of a clark is the use of these 2 words: “most excellent”.
    Don’t ask my why. That’s your job. To “translate”.

  19. Joy says:

    So far every movie portrayed at FTSF is unknown to me – including Slacker. Your approach sounds really interesing, I think I will have to watch it now!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Joy

      Thank you… it won’t take long ( <4 minutes to get a reasonable sense of your predominant worldview) Let us know what you think!

  20. I’ve forgotten all about those Matrix movies. They were all anyone talked about a few years ago….which now seems like forever ago. Wouldn’t mind watching one of them again one rainy afternoon. I don’t think I’d be able to sit through all 3 though! Haven’t heard of Slacker either, will have to check it out quick. Happy weekend ;)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melanie

      yeah… remember the excitement around the first of the series, that photography thing that the Wachowski ‘Brothers’ created, the 360 thing very cool then. Slacker you so need to download and watch (probaby best during the week, aka by yourself lol so you won’t be dstracted by the door slamming as all rogers within viewing distance storm out of the room muttering, ‘thats just crazy, it doesn’t make sense at all!’

      lol
