just when I think there is nothing to write about, I see something like this…. the Wakefield Doctrine (life, she is but a metaphor, non?)

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks, scotts and rogers).

Damn,  some days, this Wakefield Doctrine blog just writes itself!  We always try to describe the Wakefield Doctrine as ‘ a unique, productive and fun way to understand the behavior of the people in our lives.’ Well, today’s Post is all about ‘the fun’ of the Wakefield Doctrine. We usually talk about spotting the clarks, scotts and rogers in our lives as ‘the fun’ of the Doctrine, and it is! Today’s example, of the fun, is one of those situations that simply jumps up and grabs you by the shoulders, shouting  ‘look! look at the manifestation of a scottian worldview! right here at work’!

Here’s the set-up for the story behind the photo, above:

My office recently had to move into temporary quarters, due to renovation to our permanent space. A small building was fixed up to serve as office space, essentially one big room, space for 6 or 7 desks and other work areas. Nothing in the way of areas were  assigned, it was simply a matter of ‘find a place to set up and get comfortable for the stay of 3 months’. One of our administrators is a scott Karen, (seen on travel adventures here) was one of the first to move into the new building, the first to establish her own work area, which was in one corner (of the office space) to the right of the main entrance. Other people using the building found desks set up throughout the large open room. Fine.  (Did I mention that Karen was a scott? you do know about scotts, right? the Behavioral Metaphor* is that of the predator… hunter, king of the beasts….)

In any event, today I came into the office and stood for a second looking in the general direction of Karen’s work area. She had made some changes since I had last been in the office. The water cooler had been moved from a back section of the office and a plant (Christmas Cactus) had been brought in… and placed in front of her desk, providing some screening and privacy and the water cooler, was now immediately in front of her desk area,  (Did I mention I was a clark and Chief Articulator for the Wakefield Doctrine?)  … well, even for me, it took a second for the pieces to fall into place (for the gestalt to form, as our psych friends might say), and then it was, OMG…am I really seeing this?  I immediately took the photo that you see above. Can I get an lol? I laughed the kind of laugh that people do when they see something amazing that has been in front of them, but only just became apparent, the kind of laugh you laugh when you hear a really, really good rogerian expression.  The Wakefield Doctrine manifesting in ‘real life’  very fun.

Anyone not see the fun in the Wakefield Doctrine?*

*literal-minded rogers, do not feel self-conscious! Remember you are the ‘repers of intelligence’ and  “…made the trains, to carry the heavy loads”
But here’s the thing:  scotts are the predators…and, in nature, many species of predators hunt the small watering holes that are found in their local environment. They lie in wait for small animals (and other prey) to come and drink.
Karen, as a scott, has, by her arrangement of plants and ‘watering hole’ appears to have demonstrated that  “ontogeny (has) recapitulated phylogeny” …purely in a sociological sense of the phrase.

Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

  1. Amy says:

    Wow! That is really interesting! At first glance I thought for sure that it was a Clark hiding out back there, trying to find some privacy and seclusion from the group. An open floor plan like that would make me very uncomfortable! I forgot that the watercooler is a place where people linger, and yes, it makes total sense that a Scott would set up like that.

      @Amy

      yeah, agree with the not-wanting to be in the open, (as far as clarks go) but tableau of watering-hole, (the scottian lioness) sitting in a tree watching and waiting for ‘just the right’ prey… lol you can’t make this stuff up!

  2. Jennifer says:

    Aha! As a true scottian, Karen has set up her “undercover” area…

    Is the Doctrine funny or what?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jennifer

      lol totally! It took a second (for me) to realize what I was seeing, sorry the photo isn’t better, but as soon as the concept of scott stalking the watering hole establishes itself… damn!

  3. Molly Molly M. says:

    In ways this is hysterical! Does she even know what she has done?

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Molly

      She immediately recognized it, when I pointed out what she had (un-consciously) created… scotts do not spend a whole lot of time in subjective reflection, but are very quick when it comes to seeing what ‘is’ in the real world

  4. Totally made sense and love how you were able to spot this and point it our here in a real life setting. That said, are you sure Clark wasn’t hiding out in the background, lol!!

  5. Now look whatcha did Clark! People are going into the office today and…looking around…..lol
    On the serious side, this post is both a simple and amusing example of simple scottian “strategy” in a workplace. And WHO are the most likley to gather around the “watering hole”? That’s correct – rogers!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Denise

      and this is mostly meant to illustrate how much fun and entertainment the Wakefield Doctrine can provide (to anyone) with the capacity to get the basic principles! Remember how we say, ‘they will act clarks, scotts and rogers whether the know about the Wakefield Doctrine, or not!’ lol

  6. Lol! What a great spot (as in seeing that she had done), not as in where the water cooler was placed! ;) I probably would have done something similar in trying to create a hideaway spot….I don’t like open plan at all. And I wouldn’t have thought about the water cooler either.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melanie

      (Given that Karen was responsible for the placement of) the water cooler as well as the plant…the only conclusion is that (her) scottian worldview totally reproduced the ancestral savannah! lol

  7. Emily says:

    I gotta say that Karen is one clever Clark! Maybe I’ll try that at home when I’m trying to get some privacy from my kids.:)

  8. Stacy Harris says:

    LOL – I probably would have moved the water cooler as well! Hmmmm…. what does that say of me! :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Stacy

      …Karen did move the water cooler to it’s position in the photo, I would say… you’re in good company, scott lol (hey, you should go and read up on your (suggested) character in the Calypso Club story… ‘Meg’ is about to jump out of the cake and make all kinds of trouble!

  9. Hayleigh says:

    HEY! That’s my mom, she’s such a Scott, trying to be all “In the Jungle,” yet you only think the lion is sleeping…she is ALWAYS on the prowl.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Hayleigh

      “…in the Jungle, the quiet Jungle, the lion sleeps tonight”
      yeah right! I totally agree, a scott never sleeps… at least not in any place that others can catch them napping! lol

      I think I should have written the story (of this office setup) better, she did, in fact, dragged the water cooler to the spot in front of the quiet, restful, plant-shaded spot in front of her desk… how considerate and thoughtful to provide a place for all the thirsty rogers in the office!

  10. Cyndi says:

    Yeah, wow! It’s great that you explained that, though cuz like Amy said, I would have thought “clark” UNTIL I saw the water cooler thing…yes…she’ll watch the people come willingly to her. That’s freaking hilarious! Yeah, a clark (I know from experience, lol) would find the most non-chalant desk over in the corner to watch everyone from afar. LOL

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cyndi

      Yeah, I should have been more clear… Karen went to the corner (of the office) because she needed the space, but it was her modifications (the plant and the water cooler) that jumped out at me… creating a hunting ground, if you will

  11. There is a weird “symmetry” with clarks and scotts. Both employ unique, similiar strategies but have wa-ay different motivations. lol
