“My love must be a kind of blind love” the Wakefield Doctrine …the party hasn’t started, ’til the scotts arrive!

Welcome to the Wakefield Doctrine (the theory of clarks-who need it, scotts-who can’t see it and rogers-who refuse to believe it)

First things first:

The Wakefield Doctrine:

  • worldviews: the ‘personal reality’ we all experience: that of the Outsider, the Predator and of the Herd Member
  • any of the 3, we all settle on one (our ‘predominant worldview’), always have the potential to experience the ‘other two’
  • clarks: the worldview of the Outsider results in a person who is insatiably curious, intellectually self-assured and prefers to spend their time in the shadows rather than have to prove their value to others
  • scotts: this worldview is that of the predator, i.e.   quick, brutal, very-alive, sensitive (aware of surroundings) self-confident and prefers to spend their time out in the open, constantly on move, alert to threats, drawn to opportunity
  • rogers: in the ‘middle of the center’, a supporting framework that is complete, self-supporting and exclusionary, certain of their inherent rightness and prefers to spend their time among others of their kind, occasionally among others not of their kind, the better to appreciate the Herd
  • observe the person ( you or them, doesn’t matter), correctly infer which of these three worldviews they are relating to, they are living in and you will know more about them than they know about themselves

(To continue our story…)

The double doors of the entrance to the Calypso Club are glass and Alex can see a sign on a tripod just inside the lobby, obviously there to direct the party guests to the private function room, (the ‘Samba Room’).
Smiling, Alex thinks, ‘It’s been way too long since I’ve been out for fun… too much career and corporate ladder climbing, lets see what the night has in store!” Laughing she reaches the doors which are being held open by someone she recognizes from work, her own Department in fact! Alex thinks, a little surprised,  “Isn’t that Sam? an interesting guy,  that quiet thing he does at the office, no way it’s for real”

Good Evening,  Alex”  Sam says as Alex reaches the top of the stairs. With the approach of his very attractive, yet somewhat out-of-place Department Head,  Sam recognizes an opportunity to get into the party with the minimum of attention.

“Why thank you Sam, you are so very kind” Alex notices that, even though Sam is clearly focused on her (as she would expect), there is something else going on. No immediate complimenting her on her appearance, none of the tiresome inflating of the chest or stiffening of the back, Sam very clearly found her attractive…but she could not mistake the look of humor, showing in his eyes. Accustomed to be stared at by men (and some women!), the way that this otherwise un-remarkable person was looking at her, made Alex reassess her expectations for the evening’s activity.

Walking through the open door, Alex touches Sam’s outstretched arm lightly and was rewarded with the expected  response, stiffening of the muscles in his arm, obviously increased attention, but it was quickly covered up…“this might be a fun evening after all” Alex laughs to herself.

Walking across the lobby, the click of her heels serving as announcement of her arrival  ‘God Bless Louboutin!’, Alex smiles and steals a glance in the mirror that lines the wall, the cocktail dress she purchased just for the party fit perfectly, “My God! I’m hot!’ Nothing that living an evil life and spending $500.00 for a dress can’t do!”
Laughing, Alex advances on the host/guest-of-honor, Jimmie, who is standing next to the doors to the Samba Room. Behind the closed doors, the party is, from the muffled sound of too loud music, in full swing.
Quick‘, Alex thinks, ‘this is the newest Intern in your Department, the CEO seems to be very impressed with his work, make it work for you’.

Jimmie! How good of you to invite me!” Alex extends her hand, instinctively recognizing the fact that, if she didn’t assert her dominance now, nothing of the evening would be worth the effort that would be required  of her next Monday, as she tried to manage her Department, an office full of bright, ambitious, aggressive, overly self-assured professionals, including the young-man-on-the-move standing in front of her.

The thought of seeing his boss outside of the suit and tie world of the M&A Department was on Jimmie’s mind the entire day. Even though some of his co-workers referred to her as ‘the Dragon Lady’, Jimmie was looking forward to the meeting. ‘Hey, it’s outside of work and she is kinda hot. …besides the CEO thinks I’m great, this might just be fun‘.
He was not prepared for the woman walking toward him… walking like she owned the place, sweeping in through the double doors… Jimmie felt that familiar sense of excitement (‘the hunt is on‘ as he used to tell his friends in college). Grinning, feeling like he was back in a Student Union mixer full of freshman co-eds, Jimmie started his move. Extending his arms out from his side, the universal sign of an impending hug, (‘hey, I didn’t force her to come to the party!  she came on purpose’),  only to see her, in mid-stride raise her right arm, extending her hand… offering her hand!

..forward momentum ceased, Jimmie found himself reaching for the perfectly manicured hand that was being offered to him. For no reason, the movie ‘the Godfather’ came to mind.
Laughing to cover up his uncertainty, Jimmie said, “Er hey! I didn’t think you’d come! Welcome to my party, Ms….Mz...”

Jimmie, don’t be silly! I have a name! Alex, please! you need to call me Alex!” seeing Jimmie begin to make his move and then be totally shut down made Alex feel very good. ‘I’ve  been cooped up in that office much too long, forgot how much fun there is to have…‘ Alex smiled to Jimmie and stood in waiting, front of the closed doors.

Well, would you like to introduce me to all your friends? Alex felt the old excitement grow as Jimmie threw the doors open and stepping to the side so that she could make her entrance.

(Sam reached out behind Jimmie and held the door. Jimmie totally oblivious had already stepped into the room, just behind the woman that everyone seems to be staring at… “perfect!” thought Sam as he slipped on behind the two, ‘this might not be a bad evening at that‘)

(…to be continued)

clarkscottroger About clarkscottroger
Well, what exactly do you want to know? Whether I am a clark or a scott or roger? If you have to ask, then you need to keep reading the Posts for two reasons: a)to get a clear enough understanding to be able to make the determination of which type I am and 2) to realize that by definition I am all three.* *which is true for you as well, all three...but mostly one

Comments

  1. I love how you made Alex a women predator. Great job and looking forward to seeing how this one plays out!!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Janine

      As we know, a scott is a predator by virtue of the worldview they live in, gender comes into play only to the extent that it is reflected in what the individual’s society and culture affords in the way of acceptable behavior. Male scotts get to be more physically aggressive, but I would argue that they (scottian men) are total Quakers in comparison to the aggressive behavior that scottian females are sometimes seen to demonstrate.
      Kind of fun to see if I could convincingly portray a scottian female, in her natural element, lol
      btw the roger, who we will meet next, is going to be the ‘guy version’ of our favorite do-you-think-this-is-quite-appropriate? personality type

  2. Alex sounds like a Roger here, Clark. The life of the party says it all. Please correct me if I’m wrong!!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Michelle

      I’m with you as the life of a party can be a rogerian talent, they are, after all the best organizers! But my writing ability may have lagged a bit in terms of describing Alex as a very aggressive, competent and confident woman. She is sucessful at business, being the Head of the Department, but part of (her) sucess is attributable to her natural talent for getting people to do things! The scene where she meets Jimmie and realizes that if she does not reinforce her dominant relationship then not only will the party not be as much fun, but when the workweek starts, she would expect to have more difficulty managing her Department (who are all at the party!)
      Good identifying of the aspects of the worldviews!

  3. Cyndi says:

    Oohoooh….I’m definitely identifying with Sam (the unobtrusive clark). I’m betting he’ll end up having some fun anyways. Alex…well, she’d be one that I’d probably avoid at the office anyways and Jimmie…Jimmie I’d probably be friends with because he just wants to please everybody. LOL…This Calypso scenario is totally fun! :)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cyndi

      yeah, Sam is alright. Alex is definately a persoanlity to contend with, but I like the idea that both of the personality types have acted true to their worldviews and still gotten what they hoped to get.

  4. Jennifer says:

    Whoa! Wait a minute! Hold the bus!!

    Where’s the scottian female? Oh yeah. Alex. Kind of. She’s not representing we scottian females. Hell, she’s waaaay to passive. Alex needs to get some spice. Throw out some sexual innuendos if not verbally and phsically, then certainly what she’s thinking. Yes, she shuts Jimmie down thereby establishing herself as being dominant. I’m going to let you off of the hook this time and assume the aforementioned characteristics will come out once the party gets rolling. After all, it can’t until she has made her arrival.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Jennifer

      Yes, we have our scott (and our clark) and are awaiting the introduction of our rogerian party-goer.
      While we started this series as an effort to illustrate the three worldviews of the Wakefield Doctrine and had the (high) ambition to present the 3 types in the most general terms, gender neutral terms. This is not an issue that requires that a person learning about the Doctrine to have take into account in order to get the most out of it.
      The Wakefield Doctrine is about how people behave when relating a certain type of worldview.
      The consideration of gender is secondary and only influences style of behavior not the choice of response.

      Another way of saying this is, a scott is what they are because they live in the reality of the predator and prey and as a result, they tend to aggressive, more aggressive than the ‘other two’. But in most societies while a male individual may express this ‘drive to aggress’ by punching, hitting, yelling and knuckle-bumping*, the females (in most societies) are not encouraged to act like this. But they’re still scotts, still predators, still very aggressive, what’s a poor girl to do? lol
      That’s all I will say on the matter.
      …except, don’t blame Alex for being less…less scottian than you know she should be in the situation we find her, as the writer I must accept responsibility for her shortcomings.

      *the height of scottian creativity, I might add

  5. Jennifer says:

    @Cyndi

    Perhaps you feel that you would want to avoid Alex. But she’s no threat to you. Of the three, it is the scotts and clarks who get along best with each other. A clark is not a threat to a scott. But I have to take issue with your assessment of Jimmie as being a people-pleaser. That would be a clark who, never in a million years, would throw a party for himself.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cyndi

      I agree! …except for…. (lol) the part about clarks not being a threat to scotts. In general, I agree with that statement, but I will maintain that there is a quality within clarks that attracts scotts in ways that are not found in rogers or even other scotts! It is something that 99.999% of the time is not even hinted at, but it is there within all clarks, a capacity for something extraordinary that intrigues scotts and keeps them coming back for more.

  6. Your explanations of the three worldviews are becoming more novel-like before my eyes!! :) It’s fun to analyze the three personalities in a “real world” situation.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Cari

      yeah… one of my motivations to try this approach is that I have a project in which I am working to produce a book that will present the Wakefield Doctrine as a tool that (can) be used as an adjunct to more mainstream counseling and other therapeutic situations. This latest series is part of an experiment to see if I can develop enough writing skill to pull it off…lol The Doctrine I can explain, writing a credible story, (trying) to portray a ‘real life’ situations …err not so easy! My respect for you people with them writin’ skills grows every time I sit down to do one of these.

  7. Emily says:

    I knew Sam was a guy! And oh that Alex, watch out! I like how Sam’s attitude has shifted slightly while still remaining true to his Clark-ishness.

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Emily

      Tell me how Sam’s attitude has shifted! This may sound strange, but I accept that you have detected a change in Sam’s attitude and I admit to writing these little scenaria but I am also prepared and willing to accept that something is changing in the characters that I am not aware of…lol I did say strange, no?
      Maybe not as strange as I think, in that there is something about this Wakefield Doctrine thing that is enjoyable in a fairly unique way. The principles (of this ‘theory of personality’) are established but the understanding of it is far from complete.

      anyway, if Sam continues to change, please, let me know

  8. Downspring#1 says:

    I am enjoying this series as well. Not difficult for me to identify with the “characters” in this series.
    It’s also interesting reading the varied comments here and seeing individual perceptions of the characters.
    How one’s worldview/personal reality “colors” the interpretation of what’s going on with Sam, Alex and Jimmie.

    I would have to disagree with the statement by Jennifer that clarkswho, never in a million years, would throw a party for himself.”
    A clark is not likely to host a party of the magnitude of this one, but I do fondly recall throwing my own-damn-self a party once! It was to celebrate moving into a larger apartment ( in the same building I was already living in).
    I was thrilled with doing this thing right up until the day of the party. Then the doubts came knocking at my door! The nervousness, thinking “what in the world was I thinking?!”.
    My secondary scottian aspect must have been loose that day. LOL But it was a great party!

  9. Kelly says:

    It intrigues me how the doctrine always seems to be right on target. Once again, ima Scott mostly:). I need to review the blog to catch up on the piece! I was a bit confused but now realize I need to review:)

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Kelly

      That’s why there is a blog (and a blogtalkradio show Wednesdays 4:00 EST) because for whatever reason, the Doctrine does effectively link characteristics of (a person’s personality) with common situations in ways that shouldn’t be possible.
      For Example: Clearly Alex, being a scott is a very strong confident personality and (equally clearly) Sam being a clark does not appear to be overly confident and yet, Alex knows that she has to establish (her) dominance over Jimmie (another scott) but not Sam? Whats up with that?

      hey, Kelly if you have any questions or think that something about the Doctrine doesn’t make sense, I invite you to ask the question (comment or IM doesn’t matter) not only do I not mind answering questions, I am actively looking for feedback in terms of how I am presenting this whole Wakefield Doctrine thing…I totally expect that if people are not getting certain aspects then the fault lies in my writing not the Reader’s reading.

  10. I can’t believe I thought Sam was a woman in the previous post! Lol! Loved reading this, and especially loved the part about Alex and how dominant she is. Looking forward to reading more!

    • clarkscottroger clarkscottroger says:

      @Melanie

      …no! don’t say that, Sam is supposed to be someone who could be either. (Actually, if you recall we said that the Doctrine is gender neutral and would try to write accordingly) but my writing skills are limited so I had to resort to gender references. But still is true. Sam is a clark and the behavior that he exhibits (with minor allowances for culture) the same traits as would the other clark… (you did notice another clark in the story, right?)

      Damn! Comment within a Comment: Hey everyone reading this: there are now 2, I repeat, two certified clarks in the story. Anyone care to identify her?
